Schaefer hints that Saul Alvarez won’t face Lara-Martirosyan winner

Image: Schaefer hints that Saul Alvarez won't face Lara-Martirosyan winnerBy Dan Ambrose: This Saturday’s fight between Erislany Lara and Vanes Martirosyan is supposed to be a WBC junior middleweight eliminator bout with the winner becoming the mandatory challenger for WBC 154 lb champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. However, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen according to some of the comments from Alvarez’s promoter Richard Schaefer at Golden Boy Promotions.

Schaefer says that Alvarez only wants the big fights and wants to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr, Miguel Cotto or Sergio Martinez next. According to the wbcboxing.com website, the WBC president Jose Sulaiman says that Alvarez has to fight the Lara-Martirosyan winner next and not one of the three names that Alvarez wants to fight in his next bout in May.

Sulaiman wants Canelo to fight Lara-Martirosyan winner next

Image: Sulaiman wants Canelo to fight Lara-Martirosyan winner nextBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions may have to do some persuading of WBC president Jose Sulaiman so that their fighter WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez can bypass the winner of this Saturday night’s WBC junior middleweight eliminator bout between Erislady Lara vs. Vanes Martirosyan because Sulaiman wants Alvarez to fight the winner of that fight next, not the fight that Alvarez is looking to get the next time he steps inside the ring on May 5th.

The World Boxing Council website at wbcboxing.com is reporting that Sulaiman wants Canelo to fight the WBC mandatory challenger next. This obviously isn’t good news for Golden Boy or Canelo because he was hoping to fight one of three opponents on the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo on May 5th next year: Floyd Mayweather Jr, Miguel Cotto or Sergio Martinez.

Canelo Alvarez wasted 2012, but still wants Mayweather, Cotto or Martinez next

Image: Canelo Alvarez wasted 2012, but still wants Mayweather, Cotto or Martinez nextBy Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) had a disappointing year in 2012 to along with an equally disappointing 2011 in terms of the competition he faced. This year, Alvarez fought and defeated light welterweight Josesito Lopez and 40-year-old Shane Mosley. That’s it. Alvarez skipped the December fight that Golden Boy wanted to make for him, choosing instead to rest up until May of next year.

Alvarez is quoted by RingTV saying that he wants to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr, Sergio Martinez or Miguel Cotto in his next fight on May 5th next year.

Boxing’s next big star

Image: Boxing’s next big starBy Paul Walsh: With the inactivity of Floyd Mayweather, the erratic performances of Manny Pacquiao and the decline of the heavyweight division, boxing is crying out for “the next big thing”.
Luckily for us, there is a wealth of talent ready to step up to the plate.

1. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez– the obvious pretender to the crown. The 22 year old is unbeaten in 42 fights (30 by the way of KO) and is the reigning WBC light middleweight champion. Albeit a padded record and he won the title in controversial circumstances, you cannot argue the Mexican superstar is an accomplished fighter, with immense power, accuracy and lightning speed. I can see him quite easily going through the weights and adding many more big names to his record along the way.

Saul Alvarez doesn’t want to fight again until May 4th

Image: Saul Alvarez doesn't want to fight again until May 4thBy Dan Ambrose: Having beaten yet another soft touch dug up for him by his promoters at Golden Boy, the 22-year-old WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) will now take eight months off from the ring and won’t fight again until May 4th of next, at which time Alvarez expects to be matched up with one of the fighters that he’s told Golden Boy that he wants for this date.

Alvarez is insisting on fighting one of the big names despite the fact that he’s not faced the best contenders at junior middleweight to really prove himself worthy of fighting anyone. For the May 4th date, which is the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo, Alvarez wants Floyd Mayweather Jr, Miguel Cotto or Sergio Martinez.

Golden Boy wants Saul Alvarez vs. Sergio Martinez for May 5th

Image: Golden Boy wants Saul Alvarez vs. Sergio Martinez for May 5thBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions, the promoters for WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s), are reportedly interested in setting up a mega fight between Alvarez and Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) for May 5th, according to Fightnews.com. Martinez, 37, has already said that he’s willing to move back down to 154 lbs to make the fight with the 22-year-old Alvarez in order to try and recapture his WBC 154 pound title that Martinez gave up when he moved up to middleweight.

Besides Martinez, Golden Boy is also interested in trying to put a fight together between Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr, or Miguel Cotto for May 5th. Obviously, the Mayweather fight would be #1, Cotto #2 and Martinez #3 in that order in terms of fights that Golden Boy wants for Alvarez. However, the Martinez fight might be the more realistic option for Golden Boy to make because Mayweather and Cotto might be tough to get in the ring with Alvarez.

K9 Bundrage signs with Golden Boy, wants Canelo Alvarez

Image: K9 Bundrage signs with Golden Boy, wants Canelo AlvarezBy Dan Ambrose: IBF junior middleweight champion Cornelius “K9” Bundrage (32-4, 19 KO’s) has reportedly left his promoter Don King and signed with Golden Boy Promotions in a move that Bundrage hopes will make him a more active fighter. Bundrage, 39, has been fighting rarely since 2009, fighting only once per year. He defeated Cory Spinks to pick up the International Boxing Federation 154 pound title back in August 2010, and has defended the belt twice, beating Sechew Powell and Spinks.

Bundrage is hoping he can get a unification bout with WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who also is with Golden Boy.

Canelo Alvarez wants Mayweather, Cotto or Marvilla on May 5th, 2013

Image: Canelo Alvarez wants Mayweather, Cotto or Marvilla on May 5th, 2013By Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) may be only 22-years-old and may have mainly an assortment of weak older guys and/or smaller fighters than him, but he’s now saying he’s ready to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr, Miguel Cotto or Sergio “Marvilla” Martinez for his next fight on May 5th next year.

Despite taking little punishment in his easy 5th round TKO win over light welterweight Josesito Lopez last September, Alvarez doesn’t plan on fighting in December of this year. Instead, Alvarez says he’s going to become a twice a year fighter who fights in May and September the way that much older, and much more established fighters tend to do.

Saul Alvarez needs opponent for December

Image: Saul Alvarez needs opponent for DecemberBy Dan Ambrose: If WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) will be fighting in December then his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions are going to have to find someone awfully quick unless they’re just going to pool from the light welterweight division again to find another smaller, weaker fighter than Alvarez to give him an easy mark. Alvarez isn’t going to get his top two picks Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Miguel Cotto.

Mayweather Jr. doesn’t appear interested in fighting for the remainder of the year, and Cotto is already fighting on December 1st against Austin Trout. So provided that Golden Boy doesn’t go searching for Alvarez’s next opponent from the light welterweight or welterweight divisions here’s what Golden Boy will be picking from for December for Alvarez:

Cotto interested in Mayweather and Canelo fights if he gets past Trout

Image: Cotto interested in Mayweather and Canelo fights if he gets past TroutBy Dan Ambrose If Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KO’s) can get past WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (25-0, 14 KO’s) on December 1st, then Cotto says he’d like to either get a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. or face WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in a unification bout.

Cotto told Dan Rafael at ESPN “I’m here for the big names, for the real fights…I’m ready for anyone as long as it’s fair business. Mayweather, fine. Canelo? After this fight, we can sit with his promoter [Golden Boy Promotions] and we can figure something.”
