Martinez, 37, has already said that he’s willing to move back down to 154 lbs to make the fight with the 22-year-old Alvarez in order to try and recapture his WBC 154 pound title that Martinez gave up when he moved up to middleweight.

Besides Martinez, Golden Boy is also interested in trying to put a fight together between Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr, or Miguel Cotto for May 5th. Obviously, the Mayweather fight would be #1, Cotto #2 and Martinez #3 in that order in terms of fights that Golden Boy wants for Alvarez. However, the Martinez fight might be the more realistic option for Golden Boy to make because Mayweather and Cotto might be tough to get in the ring with Alvarez.

Martinez would be easier if he’s available to fight. The only way that happens is if former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is given a lengthy suspension for his positive marijuana results from their fight last September. Martinez wants to fight a rematch against Chavez Jr, but he’s not going to wait a long time doing nothing for Chavez Jr’s suspension is completed.

Alvarez would have problems with Martinez’s movement, speed and power, because he’s not the typical welterweight that Alvarez is used to fighting and he’s not shot like a lot of the guys that Golden Boy has been feeding Alvarez lately. Putting Alvarez in with a fighter his own size could be a problem for Alvarez because he’s so used to fighting smaller guys that he can bully around the ring. He won’t be able to do that with Martinez, who is both bigger and stronger than Alvarez. If a way past his best 40-year-old Shane Mosley was able to expose Alvarez’s slow footwork then you can only imagine what a more mobile Martinez would do to him.
