Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara – What the future holds/Analysis

By D.A: Since my last article on Manny Pacquiao vs. Tim Bradley 2 received positive comments, I intend to do the same with my analysis of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara, which is a possibility for Canelo’s July 26th PPV bout. Earlier today I read an article on Canelo (43-1-1, 31 KOs) looking at Lara as a future opponent and Alvarez to be talking to his promoters at the Golden Boy headquarters in the coming weeks for his future opponent.

Mayweather Sr: Erislandy Lara would be too much for Canelo

canelo300By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. feels there’s a problem with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in terms of his conditioning after he failed to make weight for his fight against Alfredo Angulo last Saturday night. Canelo would lose to WBA interim junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara, Mayweather Sr. says. He feels he’s not ready for a skilled fighter like Lara.

Floyd Sr. notes that Canelo stopped throwing combinations after the first few rounds and was just looking to land one shot at a time. Mayweather Sr. thinks he could help Canelo improve, but he’s not going to do it even if he asked him to. Canelo will need to improve on his own without Mayweather’s help if possible.

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez: Boxing’s brightest young star is back but will his flame continue to burn?

canelo0101By Robbie Bannatyne: They say in boxing you are only as good as your last fight. On the evidence of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s last bout, a boxing lesson by the magical Floyd Mayweather Jnr many experts predicted the death of the career of Saul Alvarez- who had barely turned 23 years old at the time of the bout.

In such a fickle sport, Canelo’s defeat against Floyd Mayweather last September was seen as a disaster which would have damaging repercussions for the rest of his career- starting with Alfredo Angulo. Consequently, Canelo simply had to quell any suggestions that his career was in crisis with a clinical result, and performance against the man they call ‘El Perro’- Spanish for ‘The Dog’.

Does Alfredo Angulo have anything left?

angulo0000By Bradley Dee: From bell one last Saturday night in his fight against former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) in Las Vegas, Nevada, it was apparent to me that Alfredo Angulo (22-4, 18 KO’s) is a shot fighter and has nothing left. The two wars with Erislandy Lara and James Kirkland have finished Angulo, and I see no reason why he shouldn’t retire immediately, or risk brain injuries.

As for the stoppage last Saturday night, it was completely justified and Angulo took a heavy beating in this fight while it lasted. Right from the go, I noticed that Angulo had pitty pat punches, no energy, and had zero power. The fight was halted in the 10th round by referee Tony Weeks after Angulo was hit by a left uppercut by Canelo. Angulo was still on his feet at the time of the stoppage.

Alfredo Angulo was tailor made for Canelo; Lara’s Problem

canelo300By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: I wrote an article titled “Fighters; it’s okay to have defense. No Really it is” a little while ago. It touched on the Alfredo Angulo and Erislandy Lara fight along with other topics. In the fight with Lara, Angulo defense was terrible. The swollen eye and damaged faced spoke volumes about Angulo’s defense and it spoke very loud and clear last night against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Everyone is crying that the fight was fixed. This fight wasn’t fixed at all. The only thing that was fixed was Canelo’s fists against Angulo’s face and body. Angulo was there to be hit, but he always has been. 3 of his 4 losses have come by stoppage against fighters who were a step up from his level of competition (Cornelius Brundage, Erislandy Lara, Saul Alvarez).

Canelo to fight next on July 26th, likely against Carlos Molina

canelo136(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Allan Fox: With Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s bitter experience at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. now behind him, Canelo is now back on the winning track after beating Alfredo Angulo last Saturday night by a 10th round stoppage in his first pay-per-view fight on Showtime where he was the main attraction.

Canelo would like to face the Sergio Martinez – Miguel Cotto winner, but neither of them will be available for Canelo’s next scheduled fight on July 26th. Judging by the way that Canelo gave WBA interim light middleweight champion Erislandy Lara the bum’s rush at the post-fight press conference when he had the audacity to ask him for a fight, Canelo likely won’t be fighting him again. In fact, Canelo flat out told him “you have to wait.”

Aftermath: Alvarez vs. Angulo

angulo13By Jay McIntyre: “Gameness” is a term used by people that train dogs in the highly controversial sport of dog fighting. It describes a dog’s ability to “make the scratch” (come out of their corner to fight), without flinching or showing cowardice. These dogs do not have to be the largest, nor do they have to inflict the most damage. In fact the winner in many cases simply needs to be one that is unwilling to quit and will continue to make the scratch.

With this in mind, Alfredo Angulo’s nickname “El Perro” seems rather apt. He does not quit and he fights with a courage under fire that makes for entertainment (the stoppage to Lara was understandable given the effects to his eye).

Who wins: Cotto vs. Alvarez (part 2)?

canelo132By Bob Smith: Late last year, on 10/6/2013, noted boxing expert Bob Smith published an article on Boxing News 24 titled “Who wins: Cotto vs. Alvarez?”

Here is the link:

http://www.boxingnews24.com/2013/10/who-wins-cotto-vs-alvarez/

In it, he argued that by the standard of how each of them did against Floyd Mayweather Jr., he would favor Cotto in a contest between them due to the superior defense of Cotto. He rightly pointed out that Canelo only landed 1 punch per round more than Cotto on average against Mayweather (117 landed to 105 landed), but Cotto held Mayweather to a 26% (!) connect rate whereas his connect rate against Alvarez was 46%.

Will Mayweather vs. Maidana unfold like Canelo vs. Angulo?

By Rocky Esposito: First, I would just like to mention that I really feel bad for Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo (22-4, 18 KO’s). Last night, as we all know, was an extremely rough night for him. And, whether you are a fan of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s), or not, he deserves nothing but credit for his dominating performance. To be sincerely honest with you, I like both fighters, and I was hoping to witness a very competitive fight. However, the fight did not unfold that way. Canelo’s hand speed, power and accurate counter punching were just too overwhelming for Alfredo Angulo.
