Khan a potential opponent for Pacquiao for November, and Canelo for 2015

khan4534By Scott Gilfoid: Manny Pacquiao could be one of the biggest beneficiaries if Oscar De La Hoya ends the Golden Boy Promotions – Golden Boy Promotions rift, as the huge pool of Golden Boy fighters could potentially be available to fight the 35-year-old Pacquiao before his career winds down. Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum is counting on De La Hoya fixing the relationship before Pacquiao’s next fight in November, as Arum says that Amir Khan is one of the guys that he’d like to match against Pacquiao if he can’t get Juan Manuel Marquez to agree to take the fight.

Arum is also very interested in matching Pacquiao against Golden Boy’s No.1 fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, but he doesn’t think that Canelo will be ready to take the fight with Pacquiao in November because Canelo has a fight against Erislandy Lara on July 12th.

Will HBO PPV get the Last Laugh in 2014?

floyd62111So far in 2014, the boxing pay-per-view advantage appears to be with HBO. HBO might have dodged a bullet by not making a counteroffer to keep Floyd Mayweather Jr. from going to Showtime. Mayweather marketed himself towards the Mexican fan base who wants to see him lose against one of their countrymen. If Golden Boy does not have a Mexican champion to offer Mayweather, the only other option is fight a superstar like in the past Miguel Cotto or Shane Mosley to achieve high pay-per-view numbers.

Fortunately, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez was a boxing star and a powerful paper champion, but Golden Boy was forced to use him due to the poor pay-per-view numbers Mayweather had against Robert Guerrero. Even with no credible wins, Canelo was able to draw in many Mexican fans as for the first 39 fights and 7 years of his professional career were strategically based in Mexico.

Lara will dominate Canelo, says Trout

canelo444By Dan Ambrose: Austin Trout is more convinced now than ever that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) is heading for a big loss in two months from now against WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) in their catch-weight fight at 155 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Trout thinks that Lara can and will do everything that Floyd Mayweather Jr. did to Canelo in beating him by a 12 round decision in September of 2013, but Trout thinks that Lara will do a better job because he won’t be trying to mix it up as much as Mayweather did.

Canelo, 23, is training really hard for this fight because he knows what’s at stake if he loses. He could see his career as a pay-per-view fighter sunk in it’s early infancy. The boxing public will put up with a loss or two, but they lose interest when the defeats are bunched up together where they’re happening left and right in a short time period. If Canelo loses to Lara, it’ll be his second defeat in his last three fights.

The question is will boxing fans want to keep paying to see Canelo fight if Lara clowns him? Golden Boy Promotions can drag out Alfredo Angulo again for Canelo to shine against, I’m sure, but he can’t make a career out of beating up on Angulo or that type of fighter.

Canelo vs. Lara: Honor and Glory – Fight of the Year?

Canelo with fans(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) On July 12th, boxing fans will get a chance to see history being made in what could be a fierce battle between WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) in a fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. On one side we have a true champion in 23-year-old Canelo, who has evolved with his boxing skills after losing a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September. Even though his footwork and stamina might not be the best, he has other skills to compensate and be able to punish his opponents.

One the other side, we have if not the most skilled fighter, one of the most skilled fighters out there in a southpaw Erislandy Lara. He’s got great footwork and hand speed. Lara has had a great amateur boxing career and counts with over 200 amateur fights in his native Cuba.

De La Hoya: Canelo can still fight Cotto even if he loses to Sergio Martinez

cotto67666By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya wants to match former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez against Miguel Cotto this year even if Cotto loses his June 7th fight against WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez at Madison Square Garden in New York. De La Hoya thinks that Cotto won’t lose any anything from a defeat to Sergio because he’s moving up in weight from 154 to 160, and fans aren’t going to hold it against him if he gets beaten.

“Canelo is in such a great position…Let’s say Cotto loses [to Sergio Martinez], he was fighting at 160, he doesn’t belong there,” De Loya said. “He [Cotto] can come back down to 154 and fight Canelo.”

Canelo is doing the right thing by fighting Lara

005 Canelo and People mag IMG_2956(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Yannis Mihanos: Mexico’s best new hope Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO) is facing Cuban WBA Junior Middleweight World Champion Erinslandy “The American Dream” Lara (19-1-2,12 KO’s) in a catch weight fight at 155 pounds on July 12 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Nevada.

They say the only way from going up is going down. When you have reached the top or at least coming very close to it, then it’s easy to go down. Canelo at the very young age of 23 arrived just one step from the top by fighting the number 1 pound for pound in boxing Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September.

Canelo says Lara disrespected all Mexicans

006 Canelo and Lara face off IMG_2966(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: During yesterday’s press conference in New York, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) took issue with WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) saying that he planned on giving the 23-year-old Canelo a boxing lesson and take him to Cuban school to teach him how to fight. Canelo got up upset, and saw it as yet another sign of disrespect from Lara. Canelo wants to be treated well by Lara, but he’s not getting that respect.

“He disrespected me. But not only me, he disrespected all Mexicans. For him to be saying that he’s going to give me a boxing lesson and he’s going to take me to school…that’s very disrespectful.”

Canelo with a lot to prove against Lara

By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) says he’s giving boxing fans the fight they wanted against Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) on July 12th, but it took a ton of pressure from Lara to finally get the 23-year-old Canelo to give him the fight. Canelo was exposed by Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September, and the fight showed that Canelo isn’t what a lot of boxing fans thought he was. While Golden Boy Promotions was able to bolster Canelo’s name by feeding Alfredo Angulo to him last March, there are still a lot of questions about whether Canelo is the future of boxing or just another over-hyped fighter.

Canelo has been facing guys like Matthew Hatton, Ryan Rhodes, Alfredo Angulo, Austin Trout, Shane Mosley, and Alfonso Gomez instead of taking the fight that he needed to against Lara. It’s good that the fight is finally happening, but it’s disappointing that it took Canelo so long to get around to giving the fight to Lara.
