Santos Saul Álvarez Barragán, better known as Canelo, which translates to ‘cinnamon’ for his fiery red hair, has spiced up the boxing scene since his debut. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 1990, this pugilist has clinched world championships across four weight divisions, making him a staple in the Hall of Fame pantry. Canelo unified titles in three divisions and claimed lineal championships in two, notably overpowering Miguel Cotto in 2015 for the WBC, Ring, and lineal middleweight crowns. Outside the ring, Canelo’s life is just as sweet, sharing it with his two kids, Emily Cinnamon Alvarez and Mía Ener Álvarez, and his wife, Fernanda Gómez, since 2021. According to Forbes, Canelo is worth at least $275 million!
By Allan Fox: Mexican super star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) has reportedly agreed to fight terms for a May 2nd mega-fight against WBC middleweight title holder Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) on HBO pay-per-view from either Texas or Las Vegas, Nevada.
The 34-year-old Cotto still hasn’t worked out his side of the negotiations, but he’s expected to.

Canelo previously said that he was going to be fighting on the Mexican holidays in May and September regardless if Mayweather would be fighting on that date, because he wants to take those dates back.

Canelo (44-1-1, 31 KOs) says he wants to stay at junior middleweight even though he’s fighting for Cotto’s WBC middleweight belt. With Canelo struggling badly to stay at 154, you have to wonder why he’s persisting at staying at the weight. The obvious answer is the big fights that the 24-year-old Canelo can get against the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao.

Yet we have some great fights already confirmed and some stellar match ups that look more promising than ever for the year of 2015. There’s a lot of excitement surrounding the sport for the upcoming year and I’d like to have us all take a look and discuss the upcoming bouts. 2015 Has the potential to be the best year in boxing in decades for a few reasons lets revise that now.
Starting off with Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Manny Pacquiao because it has the most potential to bring the sport to the forefront once again and has the most significance in the sports history today. Of course this is a huge fight that will break records and generate unmatched revenue for a long time to come. The hype behind this bout is obvious and fans have been waiting for too long. I won’t say more than that because this topic has been exhausted by every media outlet and journalist for years. What I will say is that 2015 seems the most likely year the fight will take place if ever.

De La Hoya believes that Canelo is poised to become boxing’s No.1 pay-per-view star once Mayweather and Pacquiao hang up their gloves, and he thinks that Canelo will be the top star for at least 10 years.

The Cotto-Canelo fight likely won’t do nearly as well as when the two fighters each fought Floyd Mayweather Jr . However, they’ll be getting a much bigger purse split in facing each other than they did against Mayweather, and that ultimately could mean a bigger payday for them if the fight does as well on HBO PPV as De La Hoya seems to think it will.

By Jesse James: Abel Sanchez, the head trainer of WBA “Super” and WBC interim Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, believes Canelo Alvarez will fight Golovkin if he beats Cotto. Sanchez believes Cotto will not fight Golovkin if he wins. Canelo has stated multiple times he will fight Golovkin and isn’t afraid, even Oscar De la Hoya stated that Canelo is indeed interested and that fight is a possibility next year.
As for Miguel Cotto the current WBC and lineal Middleweight champion, there hasn’t been much interest in fighting Golovkin next providing that he beats Canelo sometime next year. The only talk of a Golovkin bout came from his trainer Freddie Roach.
By B.G.B: Oscar Dela Hoya is evidently ecstatic about the likely match up between Saul Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto. In fact, Dela Hoya is so excited that he has gone as far as to say that it is a fight that fans would rather witness than the super-mega fight between the two best fighters of a generation; Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Although a fight between Cotto and Alvarez would be a big fight in terms of PPV, Dela Hoya’s statement is utterly absurd and inaccurate. What planet is Dela Hoya living on if he truly stands by that statement?
