De La Hoya: Canelo will fight on May 2nd no matter who he faces

canelo678By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya says that his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) will still fight on May 2nd no matter who his opponent is. If he can’t get a fight against WBC middleweight title holder Miguel Cotto, then Canelo will still be fighting on May 2nd against whoever De La Hoya can dig up for him.

What De La Hoya isn’t saying is whether Canelo’s fight will be on HBO pay-per-view or not or just regular HBO. If Floyd Mayweather Jr faces someone good like Manny Pacquiao, or even a halfway decent opponent, then it’s going to be next to impossible for Canelo to bump Mayweather from the May 2nd date.

Who will be the next set of PPV/P4P stars in a post Mayweather/Pacquiao era?

golovkin94By James P Sexton: What do Juan Manuel Marquez, Manny Pacquaio, Bernard Hopkins, Wladimir Klitschko, Sergio Martinez, Miguel Cotto and Carl Froch have in common?

They are all great champions. They are all have hall of fame credentials. However, the point I am making here is that none of them have more than a few more years, some a few more fights left in them.

It is a reality that sooner rather than later that the best fighters of this era will retire, and when they do, who will stand in to replace them as pound for pound and pay per view kings of the sport?

Canelo has little bargaining power for Cotto fight

canelo90By Dan Ambrose: Thus far the 24-year-old Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) and his management team at Golden Boy Promotions have come up empty in trying to get a fight against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs).

Canelo says he’s given in on everything that Cotto has asked for and yet he still can’t get him to sign the contract. The reality seems to be that Canelo and his promoter Oscar De La Hoya need to give Cotto a bigger purse split to make the fight worthwhile, and because Canelo doesn’t have the bargaining power right now to throw his weight around like he could do if it were another opponent under different circumstances.

Golovkin’s trainer hopes Cotto-Canelo winner honors WBC ruling

golovkin7744By Jim Dower: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez is hoping that the winner of the proposed fight between WBC 160lb champion Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will follow the ruling by the WBC that the winner of the fight must fight Golovkin, who is the WBC interim middleweight champion.

If they decide not to face Golovkin, then the World Boxing Council will likely strip the Cotto-Canelo winner of their WBC title, and this would mean that Golovkin would fight for the vacant WBC title against likely David Lemieux. It would still be a good fight, but not nearly as interesting as Golovkin fighting Canelo or Cotto.

Cotto: The ball is in Canelo’s court

canelo6756By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) is saying that it’s up to his 24-year-old challenger Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) if he wants to face him in 2015.

Canelo has been complaining that he met the conditions for the fight in agreeing to what the 34-year-old Cotto has asked of him, yet the fight contract is still not signed. Those conditions, which are reportedly financial, don’t appear to have been met because Cotto’s adviser is saying that that the financial part of the negotiations still need to be worked out.

Canelo: I’m not going to wait for Cotto much longer

canelo33By Dan Ambrose: While the 24-year-old Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) is currently belt-less in terms of titles, and is coming off of a fight against Erislandy Lara that many boxing fans felt that he lost, Canelo is saying that he won’t wait much longer for WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) to decide whether he’ll fight him or not next on Canelo’s chosen date of May 2nd.

Canelo says he gave the 34-year-old Cotto what he wanted in the contract negotiations, and he doesn’t understand why he’s not signing the contract. Unfortunately for Canelo, it doesn’t look like he gave Cotto and his management what they wanted as far as the financial part of the contract goes.

Styles make fights: A brief history lesson

By TFF: We hear the term “styles make fights” thrown around a lot but to the casual boxing fan this term has no meaning due to lack of understanding. I’ll use for this an example the more current Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr as well as Oscar De La Hoya, Sugar Shane Mosley and the fabulous four: Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Tommy Hearns and Marvelous Marvin Hagler.

Sanchez sees Golovkin stopping both Cotto and Canelo

golovkin4(Photo credit: Abel Sanchez) By Dan Ambrose: Abel Sanchez, the trainer for unbeaten WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) knocking out both WBC champ Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez if he winds up facing one or both of them in the near future.

Right now, there’s a possibility that the winner of Cotto’s next fight will opt to vacate the WBC middleweight title rather than face Golovkin and possibly get annihilated. Sanchez suspects that the Cotto-Canelo winner may end up vacating the title rather than risking their hide against Golovkin.

Sanchez says that Canelo has shown no interest in wanting to fight Golovkin in the past. As for Canelo, Sanchez sees it coming down to Canelo’s promoter Oscar Dela Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions. If De La Hoya doesn’t feel that the 24-year-old Canelo is ready to face Golovkin, then that fight probably won’t happen unless Canelo is willing to overrule De La Hoya.

Does Canelo deserve a 50-50 purse split with Cotto?

canelo878By Dan Ambrose: The negotiations between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) and challenger Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) has reached a sticking point for various reasons for their planned May 2nd fight on HBO pay-per-view.

It seems that one of the reasons the fight negotiations has reached a stall is due to the money split. Cotto’s team obviously want the bigger cut of the financial pie, and it appears that they’re getting that judging by the comments of Cotto’s adviser Gaby Penagaricano.

De La Hoya: The Cotto vs. Canelo fight will continue the Mexico vs. Puerto Rico boxing rivalry

canelo632By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya is banking on the proposed fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) reviving the Mexico vs. Puerto Rican rivalry like it was in the past when the likes of Antonio Margarito and Cotto faced each other in two bouts.

The Cotto-Canelo fight still hasn’t been negotiated and there are major questions whether it’s a fight that can be negotiated unless there’s movement on the side of the 24-year-old Canelo. If Al Haymon’s alleged $40 million offer to Cotto to face Floyd Maywesther Jr is true, then it’s very likely that Cotto will take that offer.
