Canelo orders De La Hoya to book Cinco de Mayo date for next fight

canelo9999By Cameron Gillon: Golden Boy promotions founder Oscar De La Hoya has said if the Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto mega fight doesn’t happen in May 2015, he hopes he can match the red haired Mexican against fellow Mexican Julio Cesar Chavez Jr at a catch weight of 159, according to The Record.

He went on to say the fight would sell big with the Mexican audience and would be a big pay per view fight with the correct backing. Oscar did say the fight between Alvarez and Cotto will likely happen, but he wants to make sure he has a backup fight if it falls through.

Demetrius Andrade would be too much for Canelo Alvarez, says Paul A.

Philadelphia (September 10, 2014)– In recent weeks, Former Jr. Middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KO’s) and his team at Golden Boy Promotions have been going over potential opponents for Canelo’s expected return to the ring this fall.

Three names that are allegedly on a short list include undefeated current WBO Jr. Middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade (21-0, 14 KO’s), former Welterweight champion Joshua Clottey and James Kirkland.

canelo898999By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya is currently working on Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s December 6th fight, and trying to get a deal done between one of the three opponents – Joshua Clottey, James Kirkland and Demetrius Andrade – that they’ve selected for him to fight.

Canelo, 24, will make the call for which one that he wants to fight. De La Hoya just wants to make the best financial deal for him. He’s looking at staging the fight at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Canelo possible for December 6th in Alamodome, San Antonio, TX

canelo001010101By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s next fight could take place on December 6th at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, according to Leija Battah.

The Alamodome is already booked as of now. The only thing the 24-year-old Canelo needs now is an opponent to face. Joshua Clottey (38-4, 22 KOs) is the one that’s been mentioned as the guy Golden Boy Promotions is interested in matching Canelo against. Clottey is about to turn 37, and his name recognition with younger fans is about zero now because he’s not been seen by boxing fans in a big U.S fight since 2010 when he was easily beaten by Manny Pacquiao.

Canelo doesn’t think about fighting Mayweather again in his career

canelo76By Cameron Gillon: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) has said that when he lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr in September 2013 for a while he thought about having a rematch potentially one day to try and right the wrong, but nowadays is more focused on building his own status as a pay-per-view fighter.

Canelo faced Mayweather last September at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada and got beat decisively in a 12 round unanimous loss and you can argue he didn’t win one round. Canelo looked very bad in the fight. Weight drained or not he had completely the wrong game plan and looked lost from the 3rd round. As soon as Floyd got the feel of Canelo, Floyd didn’t lose a step.

Canelo vs. Clottey likely for December

clottey35234By Dan Ambrose: It’s looking like former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-1-1, 31 KOs) will be fighting the soon to be 37-year-old former IBF welterweight champion Joshua Clottey (38-4, 22 KOs) this December.

Steve Kim is talking about Clottey being the one that the 24-year-old Canelo could be facing next instead of a more dangerous opponent like Erislandy Lara, Demetrius Andrade or James Kirkland.

Clottey vs. Canelo isn’t a great fight, and it’s definitely not pay-per-view worthy. Golden Boy Promotions vice president Eric Gomez told ESPN this past week that Canelo’s next fight in December won’t be on pay-per-view. Gomez said it wouldn’t be on PPV because the market was over-saturated with too many PPV fights. But the closer reality is that there would be no way that Canelo and Golden Boy could sell Canelo vs. Clottey on PPV. Canelo-Clottey isn’t even a good fight for regular non-PPV Showtime. I see this as an ESPN Friday Night Fights undercard fight rather than any kind of main event type of fight.

Canelo wants Cotto fight to take place in Las Vegas

canelo90By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and trainer Freddie Roach are going to need forget about fighting former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez at Madison Square Garden in New York; because Canelo says he’s interested in fighting Cotto in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Roach recently spoke of wanting Canelo to travel to New York to fight Cotto in front of his own fans, but he thinks Canelo will be afraid to do that. I’m not sure if it’s fear of Cotto for Canelo possibly not being keen on the idea of fighting in front of a large pro-Cotto crowd in New York, but rather Canelo not wanting to put himself in the position where he could end up losing the fight by a controversial decision.

roach45By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach say that he wants his fighter WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto to fight one more guy after his fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next year, and that’s a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Cotto would then retire after those two fights without facing Gennady Golovkin. As far as Cotto’s next fight on December 13th, Roach said Andy Lee or James Kirkland is two of the names they’re looking at.

Canelo’s next fight in Nov. or Dec could be non-PPV on HBO

canelo433By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s next fight later this year could wind up being televised on regular HBO rather than pay-per-view, according to Dan Rafael.

Canelo’s recent fights have all been televised by Showtime, but apparently he’s a television free agent and can fight for whichever network of his choosing. In this case, you would have to think that he’ll go to the network with the deepest pockets and with the most subscribers.
