Liverpool – Home of UK Boxing

bellew5By Rachel Aylett: With the recent successes of the Smith brothers, I thought it would be good to have a look at the best fighters currently plying their trade out of Liverpool, currently the hub of boxing in the UK. I have categorized them into five groups, as you will see below.

World level

Tony Bellew, 20-1-1 (12). In some ways Bellew is lucky in that he fights in the light-heavyweight division, one of the weakest in boxing. This is a double-edged sword however as it also means there are fewer opportunities to secure big purses. Bellew has been promised a shot at the winner of Saturday night’s WBC title fight between fearsome puncher Adonis Stevenson and former IBF champion Tavoris Cloud.

Paul Smith vs. Tony Dodson for vacant British 168 lb. title on June 29th at the Bolton Arena

smith434By Scott Gilfoid: Paul Smith (32-3, 18 KO’s) will be taking his career in reverse mode this month on June 29th when he faces Tony Dodson (29-7-1, 14 KO’s) in a rematch for the vacant BBBofC British super middleweight title at the Bolton Arena, Bolton, Lancashire, UK. Smith already beat the 32-year-old Dodson in an ugly clinch-filled fight in 2010.

There wasn’t much to note about the fight other than all the dreadful head-butts that occurred left and right and all the dripping blood from the cuts the two fighters suffered in the fight.

Paul Smith stops Tolan, wants Kenny Anderson next

Image: Paul Smith stops Tolan, wants Kenny Anderson nextBy Scott Gilfoid: Former British super middleweight champion Paul Smith (32-3, 18 KO’s) returned to the ring on Friday night after sitting out of boxing for the past year and defeated 39-year-old journeyman Tommy Tolan (4-13-1, 3 KO’s) by a 4th round stoppage at the Olympia, in Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom.

The fight was halted after the 4th round had ended when Tolan’s trainer called the referee over to let them know that Tolan couldn’t continue. Tolan’s nose was bleeding and he had a cut over his right eye. Tolan was hurt in the 4th round from a left hook by the 30-year-old Smith, and took heavy punishment throughout the round.

Paul Smith targeting Kenny Anderson

Image: Paul Smith targeting Kenny AndersonBy Scott Gilfoid: Paul Smith (31-3, 17 KO’s) is supposedly interested in trying to recapture the British super middleweight strap which is now safely in the hands of Scotland’s Kenny Anderson (18-1, 13 KO’s). Smith, 30, is coming off a 2nd round knockout against George Groves last year in November and is scheduled to finally get back in the ring next month on November 9th against a still to be determined opponent at the Olympia, in Liverpool, UK.

It’s hard to believe that Smith has let an entire year go by without fighting. What has the guy been doing all this time? It’s not as if he’s young and can afford to miss four fights. The guy is 30, and no spring chicken. At any rate, he’s probably going to be matched up against a weak opponent to try and get him an easy win so he can get his confidence back.

Groves defeats Smith; still doesn’t want to fight DeGale again

Image: Groves defeats Smith; still doesn't want to fight DeGale againBy Scott Gilfoid: If boxing fans were hoping that British and Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves (14-0, 11 KO’s) change his mind about wanting to fight James DeGale again so that he could actually prove that he’s the better man after winning a fight that many fans saw DeGale as the victor, they were sadly disappointed last night when Groves said DeGale still isn’t on his radar. Groves, 23, defeated former British super middleweight champion Paul Smith (31-3, 17 KO’s) by a 2nd round TKO last night at the Wembley Arena in Wembley, London.
