Zeuge vs. Smith: Bellew defends Paul from criticism

Image: Zeuge vs. Smith: Bellew defends Paul from criticism

By Scott Gilfoid: Tony Bellew doesn’t think that former 2-time world title challenger Paul Smith (38-6, 22 KOs) should be receiving criticism from the boxing public for him getting a third world title shot this Saturday night against WBA World super middleweight champion Tyron Zeuge (20-0-1, 11 KOs) on June 17 at the Rittal Arena in Wetzlar, Hessen, Germany.

Paul Smith – Tyron Zeuge In Wetzlar, Germany

By Scott Gilfoid: Paul “Smigga” Smith (38-6, 22 KOs) fights this Saturday night against WBA World super middleweight champion Tyron Zeuge (20-0-1, 11 KOs) at the Rittal Arena in Wetzlar, Hessen, Germany. Smith will be entering the last chance salloon on Saturday night. If he loses to Zeuge, then I see it being pretty much over for Smith. Zeuge, 25, is the second of the 2 world champions the World Boxing Association has at 168. In addition to Zeuge, who holds the WBA World super middleweight crown, the WBA also has the WBA Super World super middleweight title, which is held by George Groves.

Paul Smith to get title shot against Zeuge-Expo winner

Image: Paul Smith to get title shot against Zeuge-Expo winner

By Scott Gilfoid: Former two-time world title challenger Paul Smith (38-6, 22 KOs) says his promoter Eddie Hearn says he’s going to fight for a world title against the winner of Tyson Zeuge vs. Isaac Ekpo fight. Smith, 36, has lost three out of his last six fights and isn’t ranked in the top 15.

Smith would appear to be the last fighter you would expect to fight for a world title. Smith lost to Andre Ward and former WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham twice. Smith even got a rematch against Abraham in 2015 after he complained about his decision loss in the first fight. You don’t see that too often.

Paul Smith to face WBA champion Tyron Zeuge on March 18

Image: Paul Smith to face WBA champion Tyron Zeuge on March 18

By Scott Gilfoid: In some quite bizarre news, 34-year-old former two-time world title challenger Paul Smith (38-6, 22 KOs) will be challenging WBA World super middleweight champion Tyson Zeuge (19-0-1, 11 KOs) for his title on March 18 at a still to be determined venue, according to Boxrec. What makes this fight seem all the more stranger is the fact that Smith isn’t ranked in the top 15 by any of the sanctioning bodies in the 168lb division at this time, and he’s lost three out of his last six fights in the last two years. Frankly, I’m stunned that Smith is getting ANOTHER world title shot. We’ve got talents like Jesse Hart, who has never fought for a world title before, and he’s ignored while Smith fights for his third world title in the last two years. What is up with that?

Paul Smith getting a title shot at this point in his career makes little sense. His record in his last six fights is 3-3. Can you imagine an NFL team going to the Super Bowl with a record of 8-8 on the season? I don’t understand how Smith could be considered for a world title shot with that kind of record. Zeuge looks like a very vulnerable champion, so I can understand why someone like Smith is getting the fight, but shouldn’t at least the World Boxing Association insist on Zeuge fight a contender rather than a 2nd tier fighter?

Paul Smith: Brook has massive ask against Golovkin

brook97

By Allan Fox: Former two-time world title challenger Paul Smith thinks Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) has a real challenge on his hands in his fight on Saturday, September 10 against the naturally bigger middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs).

Smith likes Brook a lot as a fighter, but he doesn’t know if he can handle the big punches from Golovkin.

Smith says that if Golovkin were the one moving up two divisions to face Brook instead of the other way around, it would be closer fight potentially. But with Brook having to move up two divisions to take on the hardest puncher in the 160lb division in Golovkin, he doesn’t know if Brook can accomplish that task.
