Did Mikey take the easy way out against Salido?

mikey1By Dan Ambrose: Mikey Garcia had a chance to really shine and impress in beating WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido last night by an 8th round technical decision, but the way the fight ended with Mikey saying he couldn’t breathe because of a broken nose in the 8th, it really took the shine out of the performance completely.

Salido, who had been knocked down four times earlier in the fight when Garcia had a lot energy, was coming back and punishing Mikey in the last three rounds before the fight was stopped after the 8th.

The stoppage gave the impression to some boxing fans that the tiring Mikey was looking to get saved from what could have been a really tough last four rounds.

Mikey Garcia got away with pushing Salido a lot

garcia22By Dan Ambrose: Mikey Garcia defeated WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido last night by an 8 round technical decision, but the way that Garcia won it left a lot to be desired. The fight was stopped after the 8th due to Garcia saying he couldn’t breathe from a broken nose. What seems to be forgotten by fans is what Mikey was frequently doing when Salido would attempt to come forward to land shots.

Garcia would back away while taking his lead hand to steer Salido’s head to keep him from getting close. You’re not supposed to do that in boxing. That’s basically a stiff arm, and it’s pretty sad that the referee allowed Mikey to get away with that move.

Shouldn’t Mikey have continued to fight with a broken nose?

garcia5By Dan Ambrose: In seeing Mikey Garcia (31-0, 26 KO’s) complaining that he couldn’t breathe out of his broken nose after suffering a head-butt in the 8th round against WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido (39-12-2, 27 KO’s) last night, it made me wonder if Mikey was quitting because things were starting to turn around for Salido with him finding Mikey with his looping shots. When I think about all the warriors that have fought through really bad broken noses and then I see Mikey with a slightly crooked nose, it’s just kind of off putting to me. I think he should have fought through the pain.

I don’t know how they were able to convince the ringside doctor to stop the fight because I’ve never seen a fight stopped before with a nose that didn’t look bad. Mikey’s nose just looked a little crooked that’s all. I’ve seen fighters with broken noses that were badly swollen and they continued to fight.

Mikey Garcia wants Gamboa next; willing to fight him at a catch weight

garcia4By Dan Ambrose: Newly crowned WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (31-0, 26 KO’s) defeated Orlando Salido (39-12-2, 27 KO’s) and won his WBO strap by a head-butt that caused an eight round technical decision. After the fight, Mikey called out former two time featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa, saying he’d be willing to fight him at a catchweight.

The chances of Mikey, who isn’t a big name, getting the Gamboa fight will likely come down to whether Gamboa can get a title shot against WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley. That’s the fight that Gamboa wants considering it’ll pay a lot more than fighting Mikey.

However, if Gamboa can’t get the fight with Bradley, then he might want to take the fight with Mikey, and I think Gamboa wins that fight as long as he doesn’t get knocked out. That’s the only way Mikey can beat Gamboa seeing that he’s a lot faster than Mikey, and he’s got power almost as good.

Orlando Salido v. Mikey Garcia on Saturday

garcia48By Danny Hill: Charles Bukowski once wrote ‘It takes guts to be a great artist and it takes guts to be a great fighter’. Those words are no more apposite than in this match-up. On Saturday, Miguel Angel Garcia (30-0-24Kos) and Orlando Salido (39-11-2-27kos) collide in what could be the most thrilling featherweight fight in years.

Garcia is the great artist, brushing his opponents aside with itch-perfect strokes. But, as he emerges on the bigger stage, questions still surround those ulterior assets that emerge in the depths of fiercely-contested battles.

It’s not to say he hasn’t been in good fights. He’s exciting. He’s very talented. But importantly in this age of marketability; he has that coveted ‘0’.

Mikey Garcia will have problems if he can’t stop Orlando Salido on Saturday

salido3423By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten featherweight contender Mikey Garcia (30-0, 26 KO’s) has been able to destroy most of his 30 opponents during his six-year pro career with his big power shots. He’s a rare fighter that has knockout power in either hand, and he’s tough on guys that come straight at him.

On Saturday, Garcia will be facing WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido (39-11-2, 27 KO’s) at Madison Square Garden in New York. It’s no secret that Salido is going to be coming straight Mikey the entire fight looking to pressure him and overwhelm him with power shots in the same way Salido did in his two victories over Juan Manuel Lopez.

Garcia: I’m going to use my reach against Salido

garcia546By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten contender Mikey Garcia (30-0, 26 KO’s) says that his training team has come up with the perfect strategy for him to try and beat WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido (39-11-2, 27 KO’s) this Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York. Garcia, 25, says he plans on using his height and reach to beat the 5’6” Salido.

Speaking with Figthtcoverage.com, Garcia said “We got a plan. I do have the height and reach advantage. I plan to use that to my advantage [and] work behind my jab.”

Garcia has a three inch reach advantage but his height is the same as Salido, he’s mistaken about having a height advantage in this fight.

Mikey Garcia: I’m going to be patient and smart against Salido

garcia343By Dan Ambrose: On January 19th, undefeated Miguel Angel “Mikey” Garcia (30-0, 26 KO’s) says he plans on fighting WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido (39-11-2, 27 KO’s) in the same calm manner that he’s been fighting his other opponents during his six-year pro career when the two of them meet up at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA.

Garcia said “I know that I have to be very smart and very patient in the ring.”

In other words, Mikey plans on fighting in the same slow, robotic manner that he’s been fighting. It looks like Mikey doesn’t plan on throwing any more punches than he usually does and that’s going to be a problem because Salido isn’t the type of fighter that you can sit back against and throw pot shots every 10 to 20 seconds.

Salido: Garcia has never faced anyone like me before

garcia454By Dan Ambrose: WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido (39-11-2, 27 KO’s) will be defending his title on January 19th against unbeaten challenger Miguel “Mikey” Garcia (30-0, 26 KO’s) at Madison Square Garden, in New York. Salido doesn’t think Garcia is going to be ready for this fight because of his lack of experience against good fighters in the past.

Indeed, the best fighter that Mikey has faced is Brandon Rios in sparring. Garcia hasn’t been in with anyone close to being as good as Salido, and sparring sessions with lightweight Rios are no substitute for the real thing. I do think Rios is a good fighter, but I don’t think he’s as skilled as Salido. He may be bigger than him, but he doesn’t punch nearly well from all the angles Salido does.
