Salido-Garcia: Orlando to find out of Mikey is for real on January 19th

salido43By Dan Ambrose: #1 WBO Mikey Garcia (30-0, 26 KO’s) will take his unbeaten record into his fight this month against WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido (39-11-2, 27 KO’s) on January 19th at Madison Square Garden in New York.

For Garcia’s sake you’ve got to hope that his trainer Robert Garcia has taught him some defense, and has him throwing combinations because he’s not going to get the job done against a fighter like Salido with his single shot type offense.

Salido vs. Garcia: Mikey faces a tough task on January 19th

garcia48By Dan Ambrose: Miguel “Mikey” Garcia (30-0, 26 KO’s) will be taking a monstrous jump up in class in his fight next month against WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido (39-11-2, 27 KO’s) on January 19th at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Garcia, 25, has been fed mostly stiffs during his six-year pro career, and it’s helped pad his record and keep him unbeaten. However, it’s also likely hurt his career because he hasn’t been facing the guys like Yuriorkis Gamboa, Salido, Juan Manuel Lopez, Daniel Ponce De Leon, Billy Dib, Jayson Velez and Celestino Cabellero. These are fighters that Garcia should have mixed it up with by now but hasn’t.

Mikey Garcia needs to change his game to beat Orlando Salido

Image: Mikey Garcia needs to change his game to beat Orlando SalidoBy Dan Ambrose: Robert Garcia needs to make some major changes to his brother Mike Garcia’s game if he wants him to have a positive result in his fight against WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido (39-11-2, 27 KO’s) next January or February, whenever the fight takes place.

Mikey Garcia has picked up some really bad habits by relying on his power to knock guys out with one punch, and that’s going to hurt him against Salido. Garcia still doesn’t throw combinations and his work rate is anemic to say the least. His fighting style reminds me of a poor mans version of Alexis Arguello, but even Arguello threw combinations.

Mikey Garcia doesn’t look ready for Orlando Salido

Image: Mikey Garcia doesn't look ready for Orlando SalidoBy Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten featherweight contender Mikey Garcia (30-0, 26 KO’s) added another win to his resume last Saturday with an 8th round TKO victory over Jonathan Victor Barros (34-4-1, 18 KO’s) at the Wynn Resort, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Garcia was struggling with Barros at the time that Garcia dropped him with a big left hook in the 8th. Barros got to his feet staggering a little and then told the referee Robert Byrd that he didn’t want to continue.

The win now sets the 24-year-old Garcia up with a title shot against WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido (39-11-2, 27 KO’s) in January. But if I was Garcia’s trainer I wouldn’t make that fight for him now because he didn’t show anything in his performance against Barros that would indicate that he’s ready to take on a warrior like Salido. Garcia doesn’t look ready at all.

Garcia-Barros tomorrow night in first real test for Mikey

Image: Garcia-Barros tomorrow night in first real test for MikeyBy Dan Ambrose: Undefeated featherweight contender Mikey Garcia (29-0, 25 KO’s) is looking to get his first halfway decent test of his career out of the way this Saturday night against non-top 15 ranked Jonathan Victor Barros (34-3-, 18 KO’s) Wynn Resort, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

The fight is scheduled for 10 rounds, and it’s a slight test for Garcia in that Barros is a good fighter, but his two losses in his last three fights kind of tell you the whole reason why he was selected to face the 24-year-old Garcia rather than someone that is fighting at a high level right now.

Mikey Garcia vs. Jonathan Victor Barros: Another soft opponent for Mikey

Image: Mikey Garcia vs. Jonathan Victor Barros: Another soft opponent for MikeyBy Dan Ambrose: Undefeated featherweight contender Mikey Garcia (29-0, 25 KO’s) will be back in the ring next month against Jonathan Victor Barros (34-3-1, 18 KO’s) in a 10 round fight on the Erislandy Lara vs. Vanes Martirosyan card in a card that will be televised by HBO from the Wynn Resort, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

On paper, it looks like the #1 WBO Garcia is taking a good fighter for a change in the 28-year-old Barros, but when you look closely to Barros’ resume you’ll see that he’s been beaten in two out of his last three fights, and then you’re not so excited about this fight. The knock on Garcia, beside his stiff and robotic fighting style, is that he’s been matched against mostly weak 2nd and 3rd tier opposition during his six year pro career that you can learn nothing from looking at his resume.

Mikey Garcia could fight Orlando Cruz on 11/10; wants Gamboa

Image: Mikey Garcia could fight Orlando Cruz on 11/10; wants GamboaBy Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten featherweight contender Miguel Angel “Mikey” Garcia (29-0, 25 KO’s) could wind up facing #4 WBO Orlando Cruz (18-2-1, 9 KO’s) next month on November 10th if the 31-year-old Cruz, who holds down the WBO Latino featherweight title, is able to get through his October 19th title defense Jorge Pazos (20-4, 13 KO’s).

Garcia was supposed to be challenging WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido on November 10th. However, Salido injured his right index finger after accidentally slamming his card door on it, making it necessary for him to pull out of the title defense against the 24-year-old Garcia.

Orlando Salido vs. Mikey Garcia postponed due to Salido injury

Image: Orlando Salido vs. Mikey Garcia postponed due to Salido injuryBy Dan Ambrose: The November 10th title defense by WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido (39-11-2, 27 KO’s) against his #1 WBO Miguel Angel “Mikey” Garcia (29-0, 25 KO’s) has been postponed due to the 31-year-old Salido injuring his right index finger after accidentally slamming a car door on the finger, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. The Salido-Garcia was supposed to have taken place at the Wynn Resort, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Salido is expected to be ready to take the Garcia fight in January sometime.

For conspiracy theorists, this is the first time that Salido has ever pulled out of fight due to an injury.
