Brandon Rios could get in title position with win over Mike Alvarado

rios8888876By Dan Ambrose: #4 WBO, #10 WBC Brandon Rios (32-2-1, 23 KOs) could find himself in position for world title shot at welterweight if he can get past #10 WBO Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KOs) in their rubber match this month on January 24th at the 1stBank Center, in Bloomfield, Colorado, USA.

With Rios’ high rankings, it’s possible he could get moved up a spot or two if he can get past the 34-year-old Alvarado. The sad part about Rios facing WBO champion Manny Pacquiao again is that Rios already fought him in November of 2013 in losing by a lopsided 12 round decision.

By Dan Ambrose: While many boxing fans see the January 24th rubber match between Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado as little more than a simple slugfest between two sloppy fighters going nowhere with what’s left of their careers, HBO thinks enough of the fight to put together a “Road to Alvarado-Rios 3” preview episode that they plan on televising next month on January 10th at midnight ET/PT.

This is the third but likely not the last fight between the two fighters. Both of them appear to be heading downhill in terms of their careers, but it’s still a fight that casual boxing fans will want to watch due to their lack of defensive skills and the tendency of their fights turning into brawls.

Rios: It’s going to be World War 3 against Alvarado

rios9By Dan Ambrose: #3 WBO, #9 WBC welterweight contender Brandon Rios (32-2-1, 23 KOs) is calling his January 24th third fight against former WBO light welterweight champion Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KOs) “World War III” when the two of them step foot inside the ring at the 1stBank Center, in Bloomfield, Colorado, USA.

The fight is being televised by HBO. There won’t be any titles on the line for the fight.

This fight should prove who the better fighter is of the two. Both guys have won one fight a piece. In theory, we should see who the better guy is between them, but that obviously doesn’t mean this is going to be the last fight between them.

It’s pretty much academic that neither of these guys are going anywhere in their perspective divisions. About the best they can hope for is to keep winning long enough to get a crack at Manny Pacquiao.

Rios vs. Alvarado 3 moved back to January

rios76By Dan Ambrose: The long awaited third fight between #4 WBO Brandon Rios (32-2-1, 23 KOs) and former WBO light welterweight champion Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KOs) has been moved from December 20th to January, according to Steve Kim.

There’s some issues on Alvarado’s side slowing the fight down from getting made. There’s also a question of where the fight will take place. Bob Arum of Top Rank doesn’t want the fight to be staged in Alvarado’s home city of Denver, Colorado, due to the cold weather than boxing fans would have to deal with in trying to get to the fight in the middle of the winter.

Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado 3 possible for December 20th

alvarado11By Dan Ambrose: With both of the careers of Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KOs) and Brandon Rios (32-2-1, 23 KOs) heading for skid row with each additional loss, their promoters at Top Rank are planning on putting them together for a third fight between them.

The date that they’re looking at is December 20th, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. Alvarado has lost his last two fights against Juan Manuel Marquez and Ruslan Provodnikov. Rios has lost 2 out of his last 3 fights, but you can make an argument that he would have lost his last fight against Diego Chaves if not for referee Vic Drakulich disqualifying Chaves in the 9th round for an unseen elbow.
