Image: Alvarado defeats Narh - looks good enough to beat KhanBy Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten light welterweight contender Mike Alvarado (30-0, 22 KO’s) looked very impressive last Saturday night in stopping no. 6 ranked World Boxing Council (WBC) light welterweight contender Ray Narh (25-2, 21 KO’s) in the 3rd round on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Image: Arce-Vazquez Jr, Pavlik-Lopez, Alvarado-Narh tonight: Three opportunities to go to the refrigeratorBy Chris Williams: Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime – If you were hoping that tonight’s expensive $55 pay-per-view card with Manny Pacquiao taking on an old Shane Mosley would have a good undercard packaged along with it, I’m afraid you might be a tad bit disappointed at what you’ll be getting. I don’t know about you but I’m not in the least bit interested in the Pacquiao-Mosley undercard fights – not one.

Alvarado vs. Narh to replace Soto-Antillon 2 on Pacquiao-Mosley card

By Chris Williams: If you were hoping that Top Rank would come up with an exciting replacement bout to substitute for the lightweight rematch between WBC lightweight champion Humberto Soto and Urbano Antillon, I’m afraid fans are going to be sadly disappointed. Instead of a comparable fight to replace Antillon-Soto, the replacement fight will reportedly be a bout between fringe light welterweight contender Mike Alvarado 29-0, 21 KO’s) vs. Ray Narh (25-1, 21 KO’s).

Alvarado Stops Garnica

alvarado443267.jpgBy Manuel Perez: Light welterweight prospect Mike Alvarado (23-0, 16 KOs) had an easy time defeating Manuel Garnica (24-10, 12 KOs), stopping him in the 4th round of a scheduled 10-round bout on Friday night at the National Western Complex Arena, in Denver, Colorado. Alvarado, 28, a raw prospect with a lot of power, took out his outclassed opponent with a big left hand in the 4th round, sending him to the canvas. Garnica, 33, attempted to get up but fell back down and the fight was subsequently stopped by referee Curtis Thrasher at 2:17 of the round. Alvarado essentially toyed with Garnica for most of the fight, hitting him with big uppercuts and fighting very relaxed and confident.

Garnica was cut on the forehead in the first round after a clash of heads. However, with the rate that he was getting hit by from Alvarado it seemed almost dead certain that the cut wouldn’t be a factor in the fight. The fight was so one-sided, though, it was hard to see how Alvarado, who probably should consider taking on better competition, could be getting much from this fight other than working on target practice. Alvarado looked good at beating the daylights out of Garnica; as good as a fighter can be when beating up on a near defenseless opponent like this. Garnica did little in the first round, only throwing a few half-hearted shots while taking a great deal of punishment from Alvarado.

Alvarado KOs Bazan

alvarado4368.jpgBy Chris Williams: Undefeated junior welterweight prospect Mike Alvarado (22-0, 15 KOs) stopped former WBC lightweight champion Cesar Bazan (47-11-1, 30 KOs) in a 4th round KO in a scheduled 1o-round bout at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Alvarado, 28, caught Bazan on the ropes in the 4th round and nailed him with a three-punch combination ending with a powerful right hand that dropped Bazan to the canvas. He never attempted to get up and was soon after counted out by referee Russell Mora at 2:46 of the 4th round.

Alvarado, a relative late comer to boxing at the age of 18, is still mostly a work in progress. He has good power in each hand, but lacks the quickness and boxing ability of more polished fighters in the light welterweight division like Paulie Malignaggi, Ricky Hatton, Kendall Holt or Timothy Bradley, to name just a few, but his power gives him a chance against any fighter in the division. On Saturday night, Alvarado had problems against the 33 year-old ring veteran Bazan, who looked much more relaxed, skilled and experienced against the hard-throwing Alvarado in the early going of the bout. In the 1st round, Bazan repeatedly nailed Alvarado with hooks to the body and head, hitting him hard, yet making it look so effortless.
