Kirkland’s manager talks Canelo or Cotto fight in November or December

kirkland334By Dan Ambrose: Michael Miller, the co-manager for popular but seldom active James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KO’s), is reportedly up for the idea of Kirkland facing Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KO’s) or WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto this year.

Either of those guys are fights that he wants to set up for the 30-year-old Kirkland. Canelo is the one that they really one. No doubt they smell blood in the water after seeing Canelo struggle to a controversial win over Erislandy Lara, lose to Floyd Mayweather Jr, and beat Austin Trout by a far from impressive decision.

Billy Joe Saunders: Cotto’s style is perfect for mine

saunders56235By Scott Gilfoid: #3 WBO, #5 WBC, #8 IBF, #13 WBA Billy Joe Saunders (19-0, 10 KOs) will be facing fringe contender #13 IBF, #15 WBC Emanuele Blandamura (22-0, 5 KOs) in a fight for the vacant European middleweight title on Saturday night in the co-feature fight on the Tyson Fury vs. Alexander Ustinov card at the Phones 4U Arena in Manchester, UK.

Saunders, who is all of 24, wants a title shot against the likes of WBC champ Miguel Cotto or WBO champion Peter Quillin. Indeed, Saunders like his chances of beating either of those guys, and he doesn’t rate 40-year-old IBF champ Sam Soliman.

Boxing upsets

cotto77By Rob Blakeman: Many articles on boxing upsets have been written and some of them over time have become diminished or exaggerated. In any case, inspired by the recent Cotto Martinez upset I decided I would list in no particular order, the greatest boxing upsets I have personally witnessed live that made me literally shake my head in open-mouthed awe!

1. Nigel Benn V Gerald McClellan. In the most savage fight ever seen in a British Ring Benn came back against seemingly insurmountable odds and stopped the ostensibly indestructible aptly named; ‘Mini Mike Tyson’ McClellan late in the fight.

Cotto interested in Chavez Jr and Canelo bouts

canelo001010101By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight title holder Miguel Cotto (39-4, 31 KOs) says that Golden Boy fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and the Top Rank promoted Julio Cesar Chavez Jr are both on his target list as potential opponents for him to step into the ring against. Cotto says he wants to rekindle the Mexico vs. Puerto Rico rivalry.

Cotto, 33, is currently on vacation, but once he comes back he’s going to be sitting down and making a decision about who he’ll be facing in his next fight. December 6th is the target date for Cotto’s next fight. It’s unclear whether he’ll be choosing to defend his WBC middleweight title or not for his next fight.

Mayweather says talk of Cotto fight is premature right now

_DSC7608(Photo credit: Idris Erba) By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) hasn’t even closed the chapter on Marcos Maidana (35-4, 34 KOs) and already fans are talking about whether he’ll face WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto again. Mayweather soundly beat Cotto by a 12 round unanimous decision in 2012 by the scores of 118-110, 117-111 and 117-111.

Cotto was seen as a shot fighter after that bout and especially after losing his next fight to Austin Tour in December of 2012. But with Cotto having beaten Delvin Rodriguez and 39-year-old Sergio Martinez, Cotto is now seen as a new fighter and completely rejuvenated now that he’s being trained by Freddie Roach.

Miguel Cotto vs. Pacquiao, Alvarez or Mayweather: Who will you pay to see?

cotto664By Chester Rivers: Right now WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto is ” The Goose With The Golden Egg”. As it stands his next fight could be a revenue record setter based on the current boxing landscape. Some of you may be asking how? So, let me take a few minutes and break down some current happenings and read to you between the lines.

Right now there are three PPV attractions in boxing and they are Manny Pacquiao, Saul “Canelo’ Alvarez and Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. They all campaign around the same weight 145- 154 officially (wink, wink). They all mostly fight on the U.S.A. west coast. And they all have either defeated or think they can defeat Miguel Cotto.

Miguel Cotto vs. Timothy Bradley would be a disgrace to the WBC 160lb title

bradley3By Chester Rivers: This time Bob Arum and the Top Rank match making team has gone too far. Timothy Bradley has emerged as the front runner to challenged Miguel Cotto for the lineal middleweight championship of the world in December 2014.

If this fight takes place it will be the most disgraceful title bout in the history of boxing.

First off, neither man has ever fought at the middleweight limit of 160 lbs. Cotto won the title at a catch weight of 159 and now this fight will be fought even lower at 156 lbs. Cotto put on a masterful performance against Sergio Martinez and looked as though he could carry his own against some of the middleweight division “B” level fighters.

Bradley vs. Cotto at a catch-weight of 156

bradley73By Dan Ambrose: Former WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley could be fighting for the WBC middleweight title against Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KO’s) in December without being ranked in the division, says Steve Kim. There’s still nothing official yet, but the word is that Bradley has been offered a fight against the 33-year-old Cotto at a catch-weight of 156 pounds to accommodate him.

Bradley has never fought above welterweight before, but now he’ll be skipping the junior middleweight division and going straight to middleweight to fight for the title against WBC champ Miguel Cotto.

Pacquiao, Cotto and Mayweather are going to need to start facing better opposition to keep their PPV numbers high

pac87By Allan Fox: As we’ve seen recently the top fighters Floyd Mayweather Jr, Miguel Cotto, and Manny Pacquiao have all seen their pay-per-view numbers drop off with their recent fights. The thought here is that boxing fans are overwhelmed by the monthly PPV fights that are popping up and expanding their normal cable bills by another $60 to $75.

When you’re already paying $100 a month for overpriced cable, having your cable bill almost doubled each month, it doesn’t make a lot of people happy. For this reason the top promotional companies are either going to need to start having less PPV events, which is highly doubtful given the money these cards are making for the companies, or start putting better shows.
