Scott Quigg vs. Kiko Martinez possible for the summer on July 18th

quigg433By Scott Gilfoid: With his hoped for unification fight against IBF super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton now off the table, WBA 122 pound belt holder Scott Quigg (30-0-2, 22 KOs) is reportedly will be facing former IBF 122lb champion Kiko Martinez (32-5, 24 KOs) in the summer in a fight that will take place on July 18th at the Manchester Arena.

As bad as Quigg has looked in some of his past fights against the likes of Yoandris Salinas, I wouldn’t be surprised if Martinez takes this fight. Quigg is definitely a shaky champion with decent but far from great skills. Martinez has to be seen as a live dog in this fight.

Season of the rematch? Frampton-Martinez II

frampton23By G. Cooper: Carl “The Jackal” Frampton fights Kiko Martinez for the second time this weekend, seven days before Mayweather-Maidana II, and a week after the UFC’s Dillashaw-Barao II, so it seems fair to call the cusp of football 2014 the season of the rematch.

Or seemed fair, until Renan Barao passed out while trying to make weight, and was hospitalized. His withdrawal, following the July withdrawal of Dereck “Dellboy” Chisora from Fury-Chisora II after fracturing his hand in his final sparring session, has the season of the rematch feeling more like the season of the cancellation. At least Fury-Chisora II is rescheduled for November 22.

Frampton challenges Kiko Martinez for IBF 122lb title on September 6th

frampton40By Scott Gilfoid: #1 IBF Carl Frampton will be taking on the monstrous punching IBF super bantamweight champion Kiko Martinez on September 6th at the Titanic Quarter in Belfast. Frampton sees himself as one of the top fighters in the 122 pound division, but he’s going to have to prove that he belongs up there by showing that he can beat the tough as nails Martinez.

Frampton wants to take on the bigger names in the division like Leo Santa Cruz. Frampton hasn’t shown a great deal of interest as of yet facing what many boxing fans see as the legitimate overall champion at 122 in Guillermo Rigondeaux. That guy is obviously a step too far for Frampton to take.
