Glass jaw rhapsody: Amir Khan vs. Devon Alexander

khan6676By Gary J Cooper: I learned that Amir Khan vs. Devon Alexander had been made when The Fight Guru (@TheFightGuru) tweeted it. I tweeted back, asking what he thought the odds would be. He didn’t give me a number, but said he thought Alexander would win. I tweeted back that I thought Khan would be about a (-250) favorite.

Khan is currently a (-240) favorite. Off the top of my head, I think the odds may have fluctuated from around (-230) to (-260) or so. I don’t remember for sure, but there hasn’t been much movement.

The incredible shrinking odds: Saunders v. Eubank Jr.

safe_imageGary J. Cooper: I don’t know exactly what the opening odds were for Billy Joe Saunders vs. Chris Eubank Jr. What I do know, is that on September 23, at 4:15 p.m., I took Saunders(-150). Since the betting site has some rules limiting bet size, I made several bets on Saunders in the next few minutes, including an additional straight bet at (-185), and parlays on Saunders at (-170), (-185), (-215) twice, and (-260). That last bet, at (-260), was placed at 4:27 p.m. The odds may have risen slightly after that, perhaps to (-280) or so, but I don’t remember for sure, and I don’t have a record of it, because I didn’t bet.

Season of the rematch? Frampton-Martinez II

frampton23By G. Cooper: Carl “The Jackal” Frampton fights Kiko Martinez for the second time this weekend, seven days before Mayweather-Maidana II, and a week after the UFC’s Dillashaw-Barao II, so it seems fair to call the cusp of football 2014 the season of the rematch.

Or seemed fair, until Renan Barao passed out while trying to make weight, and was hospitalized. His withdrawal, following the July withdrawal of Dereck “Dellboy” Chisora from Fury-Chisora II after fracturing his hand in his final sparring session, has the season of the rematch feeling more like the season of the cancellation. At least Fury-Chisora II is rescheduled for November 22.

Kell Brook vs. Shawn Porter analysis

Shawn Porter and Kell Brook(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By G. Cooper: (If you like my opinions so much you can’t wait for my next long-winded rant, you can catch my 140 character verbal jabs @Fight_Whisperer on twitter.)

Here is my breakdown of the Shawn Porter-Kell Brook fight. The analysis below mixes those sources with buzz and opinions I expect boxingnews24 readers will be familiar with.

Reach: Did you know Shawn Porter has a longer reach than Kell Brook? According to The Bleacher Report, Porter’s reach is actually 1/2 inch longer than Brook’s, despite his listed height being two inches shorter, and his actual height being 3 1/2 inches shorter. A half inch is basically a wash, but I bring it up because I think most fans assume Porter is at a reach disadvantage.
