Rafael Marquez vs. Efrain Esquivias & Josesito Lopez vs. Aaron Martinez on September 6th

lopez44By Dan Ambrose: As part of the Chris Arreola vs. Seth Mitchell card on HBO on September 6th, 38-year-old former two division world champion Rafael Marquez (41-8, 37 KO’s) will be facing Efrain Esquivias (16-2-1, 9 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout, and welterweight Josesito Lopez (30-6, 18 KO’s) will be trying to halt his 2-fight losing streak against Aaron Martinez (19-2-1, 4 KO’s) in a 10 round bout at the Fantasy Springs Casino, in Indio, California, USA.

This really isn’t much of an undercard. Marquez is way, way past his prime and Josesito Lopez’s 15 minutes of fame appears to be over now that he’s been stopped by Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Marcos Maidana in back to back fights.

Maidana vs. Lopez review

maidana4543By Peter Wells (twitter @boxingbrains): Amazing, scintillating, exhilarating, these are just some of the superlatives being used right now to describe Marcos Maidana’s incredible 6th round TKO of Josesito Lopez. It was just that kind of a fight, and that is what boxing fans around the world have been witnessing throughout this incredible 2013. Lopez and Maidana were simply following suit.

Between 140lbs and 154lbs, the fight game has been absorbing fantastic matchups that are promising much, but delivering even more. Which brings along with it the question. Are we in the middle of a new golden era of boxing? With the amount of talent situated between three weight classes, every month there is at least one fight that is grabbing our attention. In just two weeks time Paulie Malignaggi will be taking on Adrien Broner in another cheek turning event in the Welterweight division.

Josesito Lopez needs a few easy fights to rest from his beatings

maidana543By Dan Ambrose: After having faced mostly soft opposition his entire career before 2012, Joesito Lopez (30-6, 18 KO’s) has run through a gauntlet in his last three fights in facing Victor Ortiz, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Marcos Maidana. Lopez lost two of those three fights to Canelo and Maidana and probably got lucky that Victor Ortiz suffered a broken jaw because things were looking bleak for Lopez with him virtually needing either a knockout or to seep the remaining rounds to get the victory.

Last Saturday night, Lopez was really pounded by Marcos Maidana in losing by a 6th round TKO in Carson, California. Although Lopez gave Maidana huge problems through four rounds, he couldn’t handle Maidana’s power once it got past the 4th and he ended up taking some vicious shots in the 5th and 6th rounds before the referee mercifully stopped the fight in the 6th during an especially vicious all-out attack by Maidana.

Josesito Lopez thought he should have been able to continue fighting Maidana

lopez44By Eric Thomas: Josesito Lopez (30-6, 18 KO’s) isn’t too happy about his fight with Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s) being stopped in the 6th round last night in Las Vegas, Nevada. Lopez felt like he was just buzzed a little and could have continued fighting if the referee Lou Moret hadn’t jumped in and stopped the fight.

The fight was incredibly close at the time of the stoppage. Two judges had Maidana up 48-47, 48-47, while the third had Lopez up 48-47.

Lopez said after the fight “I’m not happy with the stoppage. When I can keep fighting…there were a couple of body punches that hurt him. I never thought him landing one good combination would lead to the fight being stopped.”

Maidana in line for Broner-Malignaggi winner, but likely won’t get fight

maidana4By Dan Ambrose: Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s) did what he had to do last night to stay in the hunt for a shot against the WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi last night by defeating Josesito Lopez (30-6, 18 KO’s) by a 6th round TKO at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

Maidana is ranked #2 by the World Boxing Association, and there’s a possibility that he could get a shot against the winner of the June 22nd fight between WBA champion Malignaggi and Adrien Broner. However, the rumors are that the winner of that fight will be facing Shane Mosley instead, and that’s likely to happen no matter who emerges as the winner of that fight.

Maidana obliterates Lopez; Lara stops Angulo

Marcos Maidana vs Josesito LopezBy Dan Ambrose: Moments ago, Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s) obliterated Josesito Lopez (30-6, 18 KO’s) by a 6th round TKO on Saturday night at the on Saturday night at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California, USA. Maidana dropped Lopez in the 6th round from a right to the head.

Maidana then unloaded on a badly hurt Lopez with a nonstop storm of shots causing the referee Lou Moret to stop the fight at 1:18 of the round.

Lopez had fought well in the 4th round where he appeared to hurt Maidana with some hard head and body shots. At point it looked like Lopez had knocked Maidana down, but the referee ruled it a slip. Maidana was kind of pushed down but he was definitely hurt at the time.

Maidana vs. Lopez prediction: Marcos to brutally destroy Josesito!

zzzBy Dan Ambrose: Sometimes when a fighter moves up in weight they find themselves in situation where their power doesn’t carry and they’re physically overwhelmed by the stronger fighters at this weight. This is going to be Josesito Lopez’s situation tonight against Marcos Maidana (33-3, 30 KO’s) in their fight at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Lopez isn’t strong enough to be fighting at 147, which is why I’m not surprised that he chose to stay at 140 for so long despite being huge for the weight class. Lopez’s just not a big puncher.

He lucked out against Victor Ortiz last year because he was trailing on all three cards at the time that Ortiz quit on his stool after the 9th due to a broken jaw. Lopez was losing by the scores 86-85, 87-84 and 88-83. Lopez absolutely needed Ortiz to quit because he was going to lose that fight. It’s this fight that made Lopez and it’s not much of a win to be honest. It was more like a gift than an actual win for Lopez.

Marcos Maidana vs Josesito Lopez Preview

lopez53By Peter Wells (twitter @boxingbrains): The story of Josesito Lopez 30-5(18KOs) since the start of 2011 has been quite simple, Win, Lose, Win, Lose. So if this was an exam then when I asked you what comes next in the sequence, the simple answer would be Win. But then comes the catch. If boxing were an exam it would be the most unorthodox exam on earth. Is then this pattern of results just a coincidence… Yes! There is no formula in boxing, and Josesito Lopez and Marcos Maidana will know that, they know they have to invent their own chemical equation without the help of a textbook, in order to come out with the right answer. And for the last couple of months that is exactly what both fighters and trainers have been doing, now comes the test, and as they enter the exam room they will both know the questions they are asked will not be entirely in line with what they revised for.

Maidana wants Mayweather if he gets past Lopez on Saturday

maidana433By Allan Fox: Marcos Maidana (33-3, 30 KO’s) has set a big goal for himself in targeting Floyd Mayweather Jr. if Maidana can get past Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KO’s) in their fight at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California, USA.

Maidana wants to fight the best and to him Mayweather is the very best in the sport. If Maidana can’t get Mayweather, he’d be open to fighting the winner of the Keith Thurman vs. Diego Chaves bout as well.
