Maidana: Josesito shouldn’t have fought Canelo

canelo 07By Dan Ambrose: Welterweight contender Marcos Maidana (33-3, 30 KO’s) seems to feel a little sorry for his opponent Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KO’s) for this Saturday night in their battle at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

Lopez was recently the sacrificial lamb for WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to bludgeon last September in a 5th round TKO loss for Lopez. At the time, Lopez had been fighting pretty much his entire career at 140 when he asked if he wanted to come up in weight two divisions to face the much heavier Canelo.

Josesito Lopez’s trainer doesn’t want him to slug with Maidana on Saturday

lopez33By Dan Ambrose: Henry Ramirez, the trainer for the recently knocked out Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KO’s), wants him to be a lot more careful this Saturday night against the hard hitting welterweight contender Marcos Maidana (33-3, 30 KO’s) at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California, USA.

Lopez was recruited from the light welterweight division to face the middleweight-sized junior middleweight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last September and it ended as you would expect a fighter who was fighting someone three divisions heavier than him with Lopez getting knocked out in the 5th round.

Ramirez now wants Lopez to be a lot more careful in this fight on Saturday against Maidana because he doesn’t want Lopez to be run over like he was in the fight with Canelo.

Maidana/Lopez, Dawson/Stevenson, Lara/Angulo, Gamboa/Perez – this weekend

maidana32434By Sotoman: Throughout the past few months we have been spoiled with great boxing thrillers, this weekend seems like one of those weekends of boxing that need more talking about.  Lets see!

It looks like Yuriorkis Gamboa will be making his return to the ring under 50 Cents promotional label and looking to help his promoter, after one of 50 cents big name fighters fell in Billy Dib.  Yuriorkis Gamboa looks to score and impressive victory against Darley Perez.  Again, it will be the speed and power of Gamboa that fans will line up to see.  With a win, Gamboa may set himself up for a high profile fight later in the year.

Alfredo Angulo vs. Erislandy Lara on Maidana-Lopez undercard on June 8th

angulo544By Eric Thomas: Junior middleweight contenders Alfredo Angulo (22-2, 18 KO’s) and Erislandy Lara (17-1-2, 11 KO’s) will be facing each other in the co-feature on the Josesito Lopez vs. Marcos Maidana card on June 8th at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California, USA, according to Gabriel Montoya.

This is a good fight. Lara, #1 WBC, #3 WBO, #5 IBF is coming off of a 9th round technical draw against Vanes Martirosyan last November in a fight that Lara appeared to win.

If the fight had gone the full 12 there’s no question that Lara would have won because he was really starting to dominate at the time of the stoppage in the 9th. The fight was halted due to Martirosyan suffering a cut over his left eye in the 9th round from an accidental head-butt.

Golden Boy and HBO need to help develop fighters

linares234By Hector Gonzalez: Golden Boy and HBO need to think about long term longevity for boxing and stop thinking about quick money; By the way, these are not my words, Dana White the CEO of the UFC has the same critic about boxing.

He’s said several times that boxing’s problem is that it’s not investing in its longevity as much as it’s investing in 1-2 main attractions during the year while ignoring the potential talent that it has.

This is how Golden Boy and HBO are sabotaging boxing!

Jorge Silva: This fighter took on Japan’s best welterweight, Yoshihiro Kamegai. Jorge Silva managed to fight Kamegai to a draw.

Maidana-Lopez: Josesito needs to beat Marcos to remain relevant

lopez33By Eric Thomas: #14 WBC, Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KO’s) received a ton of credit for beating former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz last June by a 9th round stoppage. However, Lopez was unable to build on the momentum from that victory as he was beaten with ease by WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez by a 5th round TKO last September in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Josesito will now be facing #2 WBA, Marcos Maidana (33-3, 30 KO’s) on June 8th at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California, USA. The bout was previously scheduled for April 20th, but Golden Boy Promotions moved it from that date after scheduling the title unification bout between Canelo and WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout for that date.

Marcos Maidana vs. Josesito Lopez on April 20th

lopez43By Dan Ambrose: Welterweight contender Marcos Maidana (33-3, 30 KO’s) is confirming that he’ll be fighting next against Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KO’s) on April 20th at a still to be determined venue. Maidana, 29, needs this fight to keep in the running for bigger money fights in the future, one of which could be against WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Maidana has won his last two fights against Angel Martinez and Jesus Soto-Karass in 2012 after having been beaten by Devon Alexander by a 10 round unanimous decision in February of last year. Maidana, now training with Robert Garcia, is becoming more of a boxer/puncher rather than just a pure slugger that he’s been known for being in the past.

He’s trying to get out of the way of shots now by moving his head and fighting in an in and out manner. Maidana is also using his jab much more now than he ever did in the past.
