Humberto Soto wants Maidana in December, but will probably have to wait his turn

Image: Humberto Soto wants Maidana in December, but will probably have to wait his turnBy Dan Ambrose: Former WBC lightweight champion Humberto Soto (56-7-2, 33 KO’s) is hoping to get a title shot against WBA light welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (31-2, 28 KO’s) in December. However, Maidana isn’t committed to making that fight with Soto in December. Maidana wants a big money fight or at least one that pays good.

Soto isn’t the big name that Maidana is looking for. Maidana wants a rematch with Erik Morales, who Maidana defeated last April by a 12 round decision. However, Morales is now the WBC welterweight champion and is looking for a soft touch in his first defense of his title in December. Maidana isn’t in Morales’ plans for December. This leaves Soto or whoever else can be dug up for Maidana to fight if he doesn’t want to fight the 31-year-old Soto.

Soto defeats Sasaki

By Jim Dower: Making his fourth defense of his World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight title Humberto Soto (56-7-2, 32 KO’s) defeated number #11 ranked WBC contender Motoki Sasaki (36-9-1, 23 KO’s) by an 11th round technical decision on Saturday at the Parque Andrés Quintana Roo, Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico. The fight ended in the 11th after Soto, 31, slipped on the wet canvas and injured his left leg. Moments earlier, Soto had slipped on the same spot on the canvas, which was very wet. It’s unclear why the referee didn’t take a towel and attempt to dry off the wet spot because it was a clear hazard. The final judges’ scores were 99-89, 99-89 and 100-88.

Instead of a comparable fight to replace Antillon-Soto, the replacement fight will reportedly be a bout between fringe light welterweight contender Mike Alvarado 29-0, 21 KO’s) vs. Ray Narh (25-1, 21 KO’s).
