Image: Humberto Soto vs. Fidel Monterrosa Munoz on Saturday, 3/5By Jim Dower: WBC lightweight champion Humberto Soto (54-7-2, 32 KO’s) will be squeezing in a 10 round fight on Saturday night against Fidel Monterrosa Munoz (25-2, 19 KO’s) at the El Palenque de la Feria, Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico. This will be a warm-up fight for the 30-year-old Soto to help get him ready for his rematch with Urbano Antillon on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley on May 7th.

Soto already fought the 22-year-old Munoz last year in September, winning a narrow 12 round decision that left Soto unhappy with the results. Instead of just being happy that he got the win, Soto wanted the rematch to prove that the close fight was just a fluke thing. However, this may not be a wise move for Soto because Munoz is a young fighter and had no problems fighting at an extremely fast pace against Soto.

A rematch will likely be just as difficult a fight for Soto as the first fight was. With an important rematch with Antillon coming up in May, Soto is taking a great risk in fighting Munoz just for a piece of mind. Soto could get injured in the Munoz bout, which would likely make it all but impossible for him to be ready to fight in May. Beyond that, Soto could even lose because Munoz seems to really have Soto’s number. Soto isn’t as young as Munoz and was really laboring in the fight while Munoz looked completely fresh at the end, like he had just taken a light run. This is could be mistake for Soto if he struggles and doesn’t look good again.
