There’s nothing Groves can do that Glen Johnson hasn’t seen before

By Scott Gilfoid: Adam Booth, the trainer for Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves (15-0, 12 KO’s) isn’t writing off Groves’ opponent for this Saturday night 43-year-old Glen Johnson (51-17-2, 35 KO’s) despite the fact that Johnson has lost four out of his last five fights. Booth sees him as a real threat because of his experience, talent and his past accomplishments during his career. Groves and Johnson will be fighting on Saturday night at the ExCel Arena, Dockland, in London, United Kingdom.

WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns was supposed to be headlining the card but after two of his opponents pulled out of the fight for various reasons, he finally had to be scratched from the card when his promoter was unable to find an opponent for him to fight.

Booth said in an interview with Kugan Cassius at IFilm London “There’s nothing that George can do that Glen Johnson hasn’t already seen before, so he has to keep adjusting. I expect Glen to give George a much, much tougher fight than people expected.”

I agree with Booth, but I think Johnson is more than good enough to beat Groves, who I don’t rate as a true top tier guy. To me, Groves is just a little below James DeGale in talent, and DeGale isn’t nearly good enough to compete with talents like Lucian Bute and Andre Ward.

I have a really strong feeling we’re going to see a controversial decision on Saturday with Groves, the home fighter, walking away with a decision that Johnson should be getting. Johnson is going to be putting pressure on Groves and we saw how Groves didn’t react well at all with the pressure that DeGale put him on in their fight in May 2011. DeGale put a lot of pressure on Groves in the last 7 rounds and got the better of him during most of the exchanges.

Johnson will take the fight to Groves and as long as Johnson isn’t weight drained for this fight like he’s appeared recently, he should give Groves a real beat down in exposing him.

I expect Groves to get badly cut up in this fight if he doesn’t run from Johnson. God, I hope Groves doesn’t run because that was god awful watching Groves run laps around the ring in his controversial decision win over DeGale last year.
