Image: George Groves hoping to shine against Glen Johnson this weekendBy Mark Havey: George Groves (15-0, KO’s 12) is one of Britain’s bright young prospects. His aggressive, all or nothing style thrills his many fans. His vulnerability but obvious talent puts you on the edge of your seat, leaving the impression that anything can happen.

Groves short career has been very good. An early knock down against Kenny Anderson forced Groves to show what he was made of. He remained calm and won by a 6th round stoppage. A bitter domestic rivalry led to George Groves facing off against the talented James DeGale. Many doubted Groves could win, but after a hard 12 round fight, his hand was raised to the delight of the crowd. With audacious combinations, Groves demonstrated his power by stopping the tough Paul Smith in two brutal rounds. Francisco Sierra was the last man Groves faced.

Another tough man made to soak up punishment at the hands of the man known as Saint George. A eye watering cut above the eye looked disastrous for Groves. Technique went out the window as George rushed to end the fight. 5 rounds was all it took for Groves to take his career to an all new level.

Glen Johnson (51-17-2, KO’s 35), known as the road warrior for his readiness to fight anywhere, has bags of experience. At first glance, his record looks unimposing, until you look at the names. Bernard Hopkins, Antonio Tarver Clinton Woods, Chad Dawson, Travoris Cloud, Carl Froch and Lucian Bute have all beaten Johnson. But he has had good wins against Clinton Woods, Antonio Tarver and Roy Jones Jr and that has cemented his reputation as a hard man. Johnson has literally been fighting the elite for 15 years. And some bad decisions have failed to dampen his dreams and drive.

I must admit that this fight concerns me. It may be a little too soon for Groves. I do believe that Groves will win. Johnson is 43 years old so his experience may not count for much. But he is still a hard man who sees Groves as a kid. So it’s not an open and shut case. I hope Groves wins. His year hasn’t been great due to injury. He is a really nice man. I have spoke to him a few times. He is always engaging with slightly introverted mannerisms. But when he steps into the ring he is far from timid.
