Groves-Johnson: Glen ready to hand Groves his first loss

Image: Groves-Johnson: Glen ready to hand Groves his first lossBy Scott Gilfoid: 43-year-old Glen Johnson (51-17-2, 35 KO’s) has been picked out for the next opponent for Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves (15-0, 12 KO’s) to fight on December 15th at the ExCel Arena, Dockland, in London, United Kingdom.

Johnson has obviously been selected because he’s got a name and Groves by extension will get some attention by casual and hardcore boxing fans if he can beat him. Let’s be clear on this: Johnson isn’t in the prime of his career, because if he was I think he wouldn’t have been considered a possible opponent for Groves.

Prediction: Glen Johnson to knock Groves down to size on December 15th

Image: Prediction: Glen Johnson to knock Groves down to size on December 15thBy Scott Gilfoid: The more I think about this the more I see 43-year-old Glen Johnson (51-17-2, 35 KO’s) busting up Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves (15-0, 12 KO’s) and giving him his first taste of defeat on December 15th at the ExCel Arena, Dockland, in London, United Kingdom.

Technically, Groves, 24, is still unbeaten but I felt he definitely lost to James DeGale last year in May in Groves’ controversial 12 round majority decision win. It seems like a lot of Groves’ fans felt that he won the fight, whereas fans with no dog in the hunt saw DeGale was the winner.

Groves vs. Johnson: If Glen is at 80% capacity he could win

Image: Groves vs. Johnson: If Glen is at 80% capacity he could winBy Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves (15-0, 12 KO’s) will be fighting 43-year-old Glen Johnson (51-17-2, 35 KO’s) next month on December 15th at the ExCel Arena in London, England. Johnson hasn’t been winning very much lately as he’s been beaten in five out of his last seven fights dating back to 2009. Johnson was recently retired following his loss to Andrzej Fonfara last July.

I don’t know about you but I don’t see it as a very sporting thing for Groves to be fighting Johnson at this point in his career. To me that seems like a cherry picking move to fight a faded guy like Johnson. I wouldn’t have been bothered if the fight were made back in 2010 before Johnson’s string of losses had built up, but now it just looks really bad because he’s even losing to guys like Fonfara, who I don’t see as a future world champion.

Groves’ face is going to be tested by Glen Johnson

Image: Groves' face is going to be tested by Glen JohnsonBy Scott Gilfoid: Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves (15-0, 12 KO’s) will be facing his biggest test of his short four year pro career against 43-year-old former IBF light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson (51-17-2, 35 KO’s) on December 15th at the ExCel Arena in London, England.

I guess you can look at this fight as being all about timing for the 24-year-old Groves. He’s facing Johnson at the end of his career with him having lost four out of his last five fights. This isn’t the prime Johnson or anything close to that. Just flip scrip for a second and imagine how a 43-year-old Groves would do against a 24-year-old Johnson. Not good. However, Johnson is a special type of fighter and he’s going to really put Groves in a position where he’ll have to stand and fight or run and look bad.

Haye: Groves can beat the top fighters at 168 in 12 months

Image: Haye: Groves can beat the top fighters at 168 in 12 monthsBy Scott Gilfoid: David Haye thinks 24-year-old Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves (15-0, 12 KO’s) will be ready to knock off the top names at 168 within 12 months, and sees him as the new generation at super middleweight. Groves has a fight coming up against 43-year-old Glen Johnson (51-17-2, 35 KO’s) on December 15th at the Excel Arena, Dockland, London, UK.

Haye is excited about this fight, and points out that Johnson is a world class fighter that at one time in his career knocked out Roy Jones Jr. What Haye doesn’t say is that Johnson’s 9th round stoppage win over Jones came 8 years ago in 2004 when Johnson was 35, not 43, and he was fighting a shot Jones Jr. This wasn’t a prime Roy Jones Jr. that Johnson beat in that fight. This was the Roy Jones Jr. who had been recently knocked out by Antonio Tarver after Jones melted down from heavyweight after beating champion John Ruiz.

Groves: Glen Johnson is a real opponent, I’m on the verge of a title shot

Image: Groves: Glen Johnson is a real opponent, I'm on the verge of a title shotBy Scott Gilfoid: Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves (15-0, 12 KO’s) will be defending his title on December 15th against 43-year-old Glen Johnson (51-17-2, 35 KO’s) at the ExCel Arena, Dockland, London, United Kingdom. Johnson has been dragged out of a near retirement to take this fight, and Groves is talking about how this is great fight for him.

Groves said to IFilm London “This is the fight I need. It’s a step in the right direction. He’s [Johnson] still fighting on a high level, and I’m fighting Glen Johnson, a real opponent, in a Commonwealth title fight. I think I’m on the verge of a world title now. I’m ranked in the top 10 in all of the governing bodies.”

George Groves vs. Glen Johnson on December 15th in London

Image: George Groves vs. Glen Johnson on December 15th in LondonBy Gareth Rees: It has been announced that British Super Middleweight George Groves (15-0) will face the vastly experienced Glen Johnson (51-17-2) on 15th December at the Excel Arena in London. This will no doubt be one of the biggest and toughest fights of George Groves’ short career.

Groves has said how excited he is for this fight “this is a tough fight. It’s the fight I have asked for and I can’t wait.” Glen Johnson has been in with some of the best fighters in the Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight divisions of the past decade and just last year made it hard work for current and former IBF Super Middleweight Champions Carl Froch and Lucian Bute, going all 12 rounds with both fighters.

George Groves to fight Glen Johnson on 12/15

Image: George Groves to fight Glen Johnson on 12/15By Scott Gilfoid: Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves (15-0, 12 KO’s) will be facing 43-year-old former IBF light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson (51-17-2, 35 KO’s) in a scheduled 12 round bout on December 15th at the ExCel Arena, Dockland, in London, United Kingdom. This is the same card as WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns, who still doesn’t have an opponent for this card.

Johnson was supposedly in the process of retiring after losing three out of his last four fights, including his last one against light heavyweight fringe contender Andrzej Fonfara last July. It looks like Groves’ promoter Frank Warren is looking to get a well known scalp for Groves to add to his collection by choosing the 43-year-old Johnson.

Lucian you BU-TE: Johnson looks his age as Bute dominates to victory

Image: Lucian you BU-TE: Johnson looks his age as Bute dominates to victoryBy Gari Jones: Photo credit: Casino/Showtime – Despite going the distance it was always going to be tough for Glen Johnson to try and beat the undefeated International Boxing Federation (IBF) Super Middleweight Champion Lucian Bute. Glen Johnson (W51, L16, D2, KO 35) who looked every bit his forty two (42) years of age, was totally outclassed by the much younger thirty one (31) year old Lucian Bute (W30, L0, D0, KO24). When the final bell rang the result was clear, Bute had dominated the fight from start to finish and the scorecards reflected that, two of the judges scored the fight 120-108 and one scored it 119-109.
