Dawson vs. Tarver on October 11th — Boxing News

tarver443444.jpgBy Scott Gilfoid: Former World Boxing Council light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (27-0, 17 KOs) will take on IBF light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver (27-4, 19 KOs) on October 11th, at the Palms Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Tarver, now 39, is coming off an impressive 12-round unanimous decision over Clinton Woods in April to win the title. However, this will be the biggest test for Tarver since facing Bernard Hopkins in June 2006.

Tarver was soundly beaten by Hopkins, losing by a one-sided 12-round decision. Tarver, though, remains upbeat and confident about his chances against Dawson, saying “As soon as I land a punch, it is going to be over.” By listening to Tarver, it seems as if he’s thinking in terms of his shocking one-punch 2nd round knockout of Roy Jones Jr. in May 2004. In the case of Dawson, 26, also a southpaw, Tarver will be facing not only a younger fighter, but also one that is faster and punches from the same side as him. If Tarver hopes to win the fight, he’s going to have to do it in the later rounds, because Dawson often is at his best for the first six to eight rounds of his fight, and is almost unbeatable during that time frame.

Dawson Too Much For Johnson

By Eric Thomas: Undefeated WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (26-0, 17 KOs) defeated challenger Glen Johnson (47-12-2, 32 KOs) by a 12-round unanimous decision on Saturday night, at the St. Pete Times Forum, in Tampa, Florida. The final judges’ scores were 116-112, 116-112 and 116-112. Though the 39 year-old Johnson was unhappy afterwards, feeling as if he had won the fight, it really wasn’t that close of a fight at all. I had Dawson winning quite easily nine rounds to three, beating the slow, economical-punching Johnson with ease. The Tampa crowd, clearly favoring their hometown favorite, Johnson, made it seem as if the fight was closer than it really was by screaming every time Johnson would land a punch.

Chad Dawson Edges Out Glen Johnson; Retains WBC Light Heavyweight Title!

By Matt Yanofsky: Undefeated WBC light heavyweight champion “Bad” Chad Dawson improved to 26-0 (17 KO’s) after a hard fought unanimous decision over 2004 fighter of the year Glen Johnson 47-12-2 (32 KO’s). Dawson controlled the first two rounds by landing quick accurate shots to the head of his opponent, who only landed a few good punches in total over the first two stanzas. Dawson went right back to work until the middle of the third when Johnson began to increase his work rate which gave Dawson trouble as his high volume of punches from close range was effective.

Dawson vs. Johnson on Saturday

dawson5756443431.jpgBy Dan Ambrose: Former IBF light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson (47-11-2, 32 KOs) will be challenging undefeated WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson this Saturday on the undercard of the IBF light heavyweight bout between champion Clinton Woods and former champion Antonio Tarver at the St. Peter Times Forum, in Tampa, Florida. Johnson, now 39, is four years removed from winning the IBF light heayvweight title against Clinton Woods in February 2004, a title that Johnson subsequently turned around and lost a year later to Antonio Tarver in June 2005.

The high point of Johnson’s 15-year career arguably would have to be his 9th round KO of Roy Jones Jr., who Johnson knocked cold in September 2004 bout. Johnson, a heavy slugger with a relentless style of fighting, has shown himself to be vulnerable to fighters with superb boxing skills, such as Tarver, Woods and Julio Cesar Gonzalez, all of whom beat Johnson by unanimous decisions. Johnson rebounded from his 12-round split decision loss to Woods in September 2006, and has since won three consecuitive fights, most notably his 11th round TKO of Montell Griffin in the IBF title eliminator bout in May 2007.
