Golovkin waiting to see whether Geale will fight him or give up his WBA strap

Image: Golovkin waiting to see whether Geale will fight him or give up his WBA strapBy Dan Ambrose: The World Boxing Association has already ordered a fight between WBA Super World middleweight champion Daniel Geale (28-1, 15 KO’s) and the WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) for a bout that has to take place before the end of the year or Geale will be stripped of his title.

Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez sees Geale just letting the WBA stripping him of the title, and then focusing on defending his IBF middleweight title against his mandatory challenger 38-year-old Sam Soliman in what should be a much easier fight for Geale compared to facing the hard hitting Golovkin.

Golovkin not likely to get Sergio Martinez or Chavez Jr. fight

Image: Golovkin not likely to get Sergio Martinez or Chavez Jr. fightBy Allan Fox: With the huge pay per view numbers that the Sergio Martinez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. hauled in for their September 15th fight in Las Vegas, it’s likely that when Chavez Jr’s upcoming suspension has been completed, he and Martinez will fight a rematch without facing anyone else in between. This means that WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) won’t be getting a shot against either Chavez Jr. or Sergio Martinez any time soon, perhaps even after they fight for a second time.

It’s unfortunate but Golovkin is too dangerous because of his power and skills for Chavez Jr. or Martinez to risk fighting him. No doubt they would be willing to fight Golovkin if he had a huge fan base in the United States, but he doesn’t. Golvokin is still slowly building his fan base and it might take years for him to get to the point where Chavez Jr. and Martinez will want to fight him.

Golovkin vs. Macklin: A good fight for HBO

Image: Golovkin vs. Macklin: A good fight for HBOBy Scott Gilfoid: Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’) said he was hoping to get the winner of the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Sergio Martinez fight, but now that we’ve seen the fight, it’s pretty clear that Martinez wants nothing to do with a time-wasting rematch against Macklin, who he already destroyed last March in an 11th round stoppage.

Chavez Jr. also likely won’t bother facing the little known Macklin. However, doesn’t mean that WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s). I personally think that’s a good fight for HBO, Macklin vs. Golovkin, and I’d bet you that HBO would be interested in that fight.

Sergio Mora: Golovkin has never faced anyone like me

Image: Sergio Mora: Golovkin has never faced anyone like meBy Dan Ambrose: Light hitting former WBC light middleweight champion Sergio Mora (23-3-2, 7 KO’s) wants to get a title shot against WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) and he thinks he can take him down if given the opportunity.

Mora said “I know Gennady hasn’t lost as a professional, but he has never fought anyone on my level.”

Mora, 31, sounds like he really needs a title shot right about now. He’s lost three out of his last six fights and hasn’t beaten a world class opponent since his upset victory over an out of shape Vernon Forrest four years ago in June 2008. That’s a long time between important wins, and it’s cost Mora him his ranking in the top 15. Mora is no longer ranked in the top 15 by any of the sanctioning bodies and that makes a lot of sense. How can the sanctioning bodies have Mora ranked when he’s been beaten in two out of his last three fights.

Golovkin #2 in Ring poll for voting in best middleweight in the world

Image: Golovkin #2 in Ring poll for voting in best middleweight in the worldBy Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-0-1, 32 KO’s) came in #3 in a RingTV poll for who the best middleweight is in the world with 12%. Former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (49-2-2. 28 KO’s) came in #1 in the boxing fan voting at 68.1%, and WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) took #2 at 14.9% of the vote.

Here is the current poll results:

Sergio Martinez 68.1%
Gennady Golovkin 14.9%
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. 12%

This is a bad sign for the 26-year-old Chavez Jr., because he’s about to face Martinez on September 15th in Las Vegas, and with boxing fans not seeing him as legit as the number #1 fighter in the division, it’s looking bad for him. Chavez Jr. could be about to get exposed and finally beaten.

Is HBO trying to steer Golovkin away from Chavez Jr?

Image: Is HBO trying to steer Golovkin away from Chavez Jr?By Jason Kim: If you had the chance to watch HBO analyst Max Kellerman’s interview with WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin last Saturday night you’ll notice that instead of asking the logical question to Golovkin about whether he’d be interested in facing the winner of the fight between WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Sergio Martinez, Kellerman instead asked Golovkin if he’d be willing to fight the winner of the September 8th fight between WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward and Chad Dawson.

Geale could face Soliman next rather than Golovkin

Image: Geale could face Soliman next rather than GolovkinBy Sean McDaniel: IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel Geale (28-1, 15 KO’s) may opt to defend his titles against his International Boxing Federation mandatory challenger 38-year-old fellow Australian Sam Soliman (42-11, 17 KO’s) next rather than face WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

Golovkin would give Froch problems

Image: Golovkin would give Froch problemsBy Scott Gilfoid: WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) says he’d be open to fighting super middleweights in order to get the biggest fight possible if he can’t get something closer to his weight. Golovkin, 30, is already sparring with light heavyweights and cruiserweights because he’s too powerful and tough to spar with middleweights. It would be interested to see how Golovkin would do against IBF middleweight champion Carl Froch.

Golovkin wants either Chavez Jr. or Martinez – he doesn’t have a preference

Image: Golovkin wants either Chavez Jr. or Martinez - he doesn't have a preferenceBy Allan Fox: WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) doesn’t care whether he gets Sergio Martinez of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. next, as long as he gets one of them in the ring so that he can prove himself. And if the winner of the Chavez Jr-Martinez fight on September 15th wants nothing to do with him, Golovkin will then target IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel Geale now that he’s beaten WBA Super World middleweight champion Felix Sturm to take his belt.
