Gennady Golovkin vs. Gabriel Rosado on January 19th in MSG, New York

Image: Gennady Golovkin vs. Gabriel Rosado on January 19th in MSG, New YorkBy Dan Ambrose: Dan Rafael is reporting that a deal has been made for unbeaten WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) to defend his title against junior middleweight Gabriel Rosado (21-5, 13 KO’s) in an HBO televised fight on January 19th at the Madison Square Garden, in New York, New York, USA. This is the same card as the featherweight contest between WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido vs. Mikey Garcia.

I’m glad that Golovkin finally has an opponent for this fight date, but I’m not too impressed with the guy that they got in the 26-year-old Rosado. However, it was down to either him or middleweight contender Fernando Guerrero, a fighter that had recently been knocked out by 40-year-old Grady Brewer. That wouldn’t have been an appealing fight to see Golovkin vs. Guerrero because the outcome would be obvious.

Golovkin: Future middleweight ruler?

Image: Golovkin: Future middleweight ruler?First lets take a look at the current middleweight landscape. We have one champion who stands atop of the current pile, but is the wrong side of 30, one so-called world champion who just unified two of the alphabet belts, only to not fight his mandatory and be stripped of the WBA title. Now why would a unified world champion give up a belt they had fought for, for most of their lives for without a fight?

Now I know everybody is going to say Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) isn’t a big enough draw. He has only had one fight in America on HBO etc. The simple fact off the matter is that Daniel Geale didn’t want to fight Golovkin.

Golovkin vs. Oosthuizen still in play for January 19th

By Dan Ambrose: A fight between WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and unbeaten IBO super middleweight champion Thomas Oosthuizen is still a possibility for January 19th at Madison Square Garden, in New York. According to Steve Kim, he says that he’s hearing that Ooszthuizen is asking for too much money for the fight to get made at the moment. However, there’s still a possibility that the fight can get made if the money is right.

Oosthuizen and Edwin Rodriguez are possibilties for Golovkin on 1/19

By Allan Fox: The WBA stripped WBA Super World middleweight champion Daniel Geale for not agreeing to fight World Boxing Association (WBA) World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) after having been ordered to do so following Geale’s win over Felix Sturm. Golovkin will now be fighting either Edwin Rodriguez (22-0, 15 KO’s) or Thomas Oosthuizen (20-0-1, 13 KO’s) on January 19th at Madison Square Garden in New York, according to Dan Rafael.

Gennady Golovkin vs. Thomas Oosthuizen on January 19th in New York

Image: Gennady Golovkin vs. Thomas Oosthuizen on January 19th in New YorkBy Dan Ambrose: WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) will be defending his title against unbeaten IBO super middleweight champion Thomas Oosthuizen (20-0, 13 KO’s) on January 19th, at New York’s Madison Square Garden, according to goldengloves.co.za.

Golovkin, 30, was hoping to fight World Boxing Association Super World middleweight champion Daniel Geale next, but Geale instead chose to fight Australian Anthony Mundine. This in turn led to the WBA quickly stripping Geale of his title. However, Golovkin now has an arguably better opponent in 6’4″ South African Oosthuizen, who has been impressing boxing fans in the United States recently with his wins on Showtime Sports.

Golovkin back in action on 1/19 on HBO

Image: Golovkin back in action on 1/19 on HBOBy Dan Ambrose: WBA Super World middleweight champion Daniel Geale has reportedly been stripped of his title by the World Boxing Association for not fighting Gennady Golovkin, according to Steve Kim on his twitter. Golovkin, 30, is expected back in the ring on January 19th on HBO, says Kim. There’s still no opponent picked out for him, however, and it’s not looking good in terms of Golovkin fighting a well known fighter that boxing fans care about.

If Golovkin can’t get a well known opponent like Peter Quillin, Sergio Martinez or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to fight him we might have to settle for seeing Golovkin fight one of the contenders the WBA has ranked. I’d be happy to see Golovkin fight someone like Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam or Dimitry Pirog if none of the big names want to fight him.

Geale to be stripped by WBA if he faces Mundine instead of Golovkin

Image: Geale to be stripped by WBA if he faces Mundine instead of GolovkinBy Scott Gilfoid: It looks like WBA Super World middleweight champion Daniel Geale (28-1, 15 KO’s) will soon have to vacate his WBA title after the World Boxing Association determined at their convention that the 31-year-old Geale will have to face WBA regular middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) next instead of the fight that Geale wants to make next against fellow Australian Anthony Mundine (44-4, 26 KO’s) in Australia.

The fight against Mundine is a winnable one for Geale and would bring him a lot more money than a fight against the powerful Golovkin, which is a much more dangerous fight for Geale. It was clear that Geale would have to fight Golovkin next after Geale defeated WBA Super World middleweight champion Felix Sturm last September, but instead there’s been talk of Geale taking the fight with Mundine and then possibly Geale’s #1 IBF contender Sam Soliman after that. Soliman is Australian as well, so it makes sense from Geale’s perspective to take that fight as well BEFORE Geale fights the dangerous Golovkin.

Will Peter Quillin avoid Golovkin now?

Image: Will Peter Quillin avoid Golovkin now?By Allan Fox: Peter Quillin (28-0, 20 KO’s) did a great job of knocking down WBO middleweight champion Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam six times en route to winning a 12 round unanimous decision last Saturday night to capture his WBO 160 pound title. That was definitely a good first step for the 29-year-old Quillin in making a name for himself in the sport. But fans want more from him than that.

They want to see Quillin take on the biggest names and the best fighters at middleweight, and not look to avoid the top guys. One top guy that hardcore boxing fans badly want to see Quillin fight next is WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s).

Quillin vs. Golovkin: An excellent unification fight

Image: Quillin vs. Golovkin: An excellent unification fightBy Dan Ambrose: Peter Quillin (28-0, 20 KO’s) looked good in beating WBO middleweight champion Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam by a 12 round unanimous decision last Saturday night to claim the World Boxing Organization title. It’s now his and the question is what will Quillin do with the title. Given that there’s not a lot of exciting fights for him if he merely looks to defend the title against the top contenders the WBO has listed.

The best Quillin can hope for are fights against Martin Murray, Dmitriy Pirog, Marco Antonio Rubio, Jermain Taylor and Anthony Mundine. I don’t the interest from the boxing community would be fight for those fights. But what would be interesting is a unification bout between Quillin and WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s).

Cotto sparring with Golovkin to get ready for Trout

Image: Cotto sparring with Golovkin to get ready for TroutBy Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KO’s) is reportedly sparring with WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin among others at Big Bear Lake, in California to get ready for Cotto’s upcoming December 1st fight against WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (25-0, 14 KO’s) on December 1st at the Madison Square Garden, in New York, New York, USA. Cotto, who turns 32 on October 29th, will be sparring with the hard hitting Golovkin in three separate sparring sessions with hope of being able to beat the 27-year-old Trout.

Golovkin is a much different fighter from the southpaw Trout, however, and it’s difficult to see how this sparring will help Cotto get ready for Trout, who is much more of a finesse fighter in comparison to Golovkin. The only similarities that Golovkin and Trout have is in height and their unbeaten records. Golovkin is faster, better defensively and a much bigger puncher than Trout.
