Sergio Mora: Golovkin has never faced anyone like me

Image: Sergio Mora: Golovkin has never faced anyone like meBy Dan Ambrose: Light hitting former WBC light middleweight champion Sergio Mora (23-3-2, 7 KO’s) wants to get a title shot against WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) and he thinks he can take him down if given the opportunity.

Mora said “I know Gennady hasn’t lost as a professional, but he has never fought anyone on my level.”

Mora, 31, sounds like he really needs a title shot right about now. He’s lost three out of his last six fights and hasn’t beaten a world class opponent since his upset victory over an out of shape Vernon Forrest four years ago in June 2008. That’s a long time between important wins, and it’s cost Mora him his ranking in the top 15. Mora is no longer ranked in the top 15 by any of the sanctioning bodies and that makes a lot of sense. How can the sanctioning bodies have Mora ranked when he’s been beaten in two out of his last three fights.

It might be entertaining to see Golovkin fight Mora, because he’d likely have to chase Mora all around the ring all night long and it would be interesting to see if he could catch up to him finally. But I don’t see how the fight can be made without Mora having a top 15 ranking. Golovkin would have to get permission by the World Boxing Association to make this fight, and that’s probably not going to happen.

It’s not exactly the big money fight that Golovkin was hoping to get. This would have to be a last resort type of fight for Golovkin to take if he couldn’t dig up a fight at middleweight, super middleweight or junior middleweight among the champions or contenders in those weight classes.

Mora has been beaten twice by Brian Vera in the past year and that really hurts his chances at getting a big fight against someone like Golovkin.
