Not impressed with Ring’s pound for pound list

wladimir3by Bob Smith: Though Ring magazine is a respectable if not venerable boxing publication, there are two ways in which its pound for pound list can inaccurately report the best boxers – one is by being susceptible to the favorites of boxing promoters and hype; the other is by overemphasizing recent wins, especially by knockout.

For instance, IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko jumped from #9 to #4 just because he defeated a badly overmatched challenger in Francesco Pianeta. Also, WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner is still untested yet is ranked ahead of Sergio Martinez on the list. I will present my own list here to correct for these errors.

The fights that need to be made

golovkin1By Onaps: Boxing fans are like classical music lovers to MMA’s headbangers ball, and as a boxing fan, these hard headed promoters needs to realize that some classic music needs to be made amongst each other.

All boxing fans deserve the best fights to be made. So, I am comprising a list of the top 10 fights that boxing fans news to see

10). André Ward vs. Bernard Hopkin: This is a classic, passing of the torch fight. Hopkins is the only challenge near his weight beside possibly André Dirrell (who needs to get active before his prime passes him by). I don’t see Ward losing to B-Hop, although it would be an interesting contest.

Chavez Jr. vs. Golovkin needs to be made

chavez5434By Tim Wathen: With WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez out for the remainder of 2013 due to an existing hand and knee injury he re-aggravated during his fight with Martin Murray, it opens the door for an even more exciting match-up between middleweights Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KOs) and Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KOs). Chavez Jr.

was expected to rematch Martinez in September after suffering his first defeat last year to the champion. Chavez Jr. has previously announced his interest in fighting Golovkin (or GGG, as he’s known to his fans), arguably the most dangerous fighter in the middleweight division.

Why isn’t Canelo calling out Golovkin or Andre Ward?

canelo44By Dan Ambrose: In his recent win over WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout last month, WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) scaled in at 172 lbs after rehydrating for the bout after making the 154 pound limit a day earlier.

That’s 18 pounds of rehydration weight that Canelo gained back, and obviously that can’t be good for the human body to strip off that much water weight in dehydrating and then putting it back on within 24 hours to fight. The 172 pounds puts Canelo squarely in the light heavyweight class, because the 168 division ends at 168 and anything from 169 to 175 is considered a light heavyweight.

Golovkin wants Canelo after Macklin fight

canelo66By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) reportedly wants to face WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) after Golovkin gets finished dispatching contender Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) on June 29th in their fight at the MGM Grand at the Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Golovkin, 31, says he’ll even come down to 154 lbs. to make the fight easier for the 22-year-old Canelo to make. Now the question is whether Canelo and his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions will agree to take the fight with Golovkin or if they’ll see this as too dangerous of a fight because Golovkin would likely rehydrate to the mid-160s and that wouldn’t give Canelo much of a weight advantage like he’d have if he fought Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Macklin wants Sergio Martinez rematch if he beats Golovkin on 6/29

macklin4323By Scott Gilfoid: Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) is looking past his next fight against WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) on June 29th towards a rematch against WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, who knocked Macklin out in the 11th round last March in New York.

Macklin figures that all he has to do is beat Golovkin and then he’ll get the Martinez rematch.

Macklin said to fightnews.com “Me beating him [Golovin] will throw me straight back into a rematch with Sergio Martinez. I know next time if I were to fight Sergio, I’d beat him.”

Dibella: Macklin has good chance of beating Golovkin

macklin444By Scott Gilfoid: Lou Dibella, the promoter for Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s), thinks he has a great chance of beating unbeaten WBA World middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) in their fight on June 29th at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA.

Dibella said to RingTV “I believe my guy [Macklin] has an excellent chance of winning this fight. This is the biggest fight of Golovkin’s career. [Gabriel] Rosado had some success against ‘GGG’ by pushing him backwards. Macklin is a whole lot bigger and stronger than Rosado.”

Macklin promising to KO Golovkin on June 29th in Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA

329(Photo credit GeoIMAGEZ) By Scott Gilfoid: Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) says he’s going to not only beat WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) when he meets him on June 29th, but he’s also going to knock him out as well in their fight at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA.

Macklin said this at his press conference today with Golovkin: “He is going to lose on June 29th…I am going to knock GGG out…I am by far the biggest puncher he has ever fought in his life.”

Macklin the biggest puncher that Golovkin has faced? I think not. Golovkin has fought Andre Dirrell, Grzegorz Proksa, Lucian Bute and Matt Karobov, to name just a tiny handful of guys that have more power than Macklin does.

In just looking over Golovkin’s amateur career, I can see 10 other fighters with arguably better power than Macklin and the only reason I didn’t list them here is because I don’t want my entire article to be one long list of fighters with better power than Macklin.
