Mayweather: I would beat Golovkin

Floyd Mayweather vs Manny PacquiaoBy Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. was dismissive of WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin on Wednesday in talking to the media. Mayweather said that he feels he would have no problems beating Golovkin if the two of them were to fight.

Mayweather feels that even at his own weight of 150 pounds, he would still defeat the 170 pound Golovkin if a fight were made between them. Mayweather saw Golovkin’s recent win over ESPN regular Willie Monroe Jr., and he came away not impressed with what he saw from the Kazakhstan star.

Mayweather: Golovkin would be a good fight for me, but I’m almost finished

Floyd MayweatherBy Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr. told the media on Wednesday that he scouted out WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin to watch some of his fighters after he kept hearing news about him talking in the media about wanting to fight him. Mayweather said that he thought that a fight against Golovkin would be a good one, but his career is almost over.

Mayweather then pointed out that he walks around between fights at around 150, meaning that he would be giving away a lot of size to the 170 pound Golovkin.

Arum: Golovkin needs to move to 168 for the big fights

golovkin7744By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum thinks WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golokvin (33-0, 30 KOs) needs to forget about trying to get fights against Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez because he doesn’t see either of those fighters giving Golovkin the time of day.

Arum feels that they will make more money facing each other than facing a guy like Golovkin, who doesn’t bring the same kind of money to the table as they do for his fights. Arum thinks that HBO has been babying Golovkin by letting him fight lower level opposition without insisting that he fight the good fighters.

Mayweather vs. Golovkin would be a good match-up for September

Floyd Mayweather JrBy Scott Gilfoid: Today’s trash talking between WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) and Floyd Mayweather Jr’s camp opens up what could be an interesting fight for Mayweather’s career final on September 12th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Unlike some of the possible opponents for Mayweather’s final fight, like Amir Khan and Kell Brook, Golovkin is well-known in the United States. Brook and Khan don’t have the name recognition for Mayweather to get much attention in fighting them.

Erislandy Lara has the shot at beating Golovkin, says DeCubas

1-EW5G1460By Allan Fox: Boxing manager Luis DeCubas believes that of all the fighters in the 154 and 160lb divisions, Erislandy Lara is the guy that would have a very good chance of beating WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin if he could get the Kazakhstan fighter to face him.

DeCubas thinks that Lara could do the same thing to Golovkin that Lara did to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in their fight last year in July. Canelo won that fight by a disputed 12 round split decision, but DeCubas felt that Lara had done enough to get the victory due to Canelo landing only eight head shots in the entire fight.

Golovkin with chance to fight Lemieux-N’Dam winner

golovkin64By Dan Ambrose: It’s looking like the only chance that WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) has at getting a big fight in the near future is for him to wait until the smoke clears for the June 20th fight between David Lemieux (33-2, 31 KOs) and Hassan N’Dam (31-1, 18 KOs) this Saturday night at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Lemieux and N’Dam are fighting for the vacant IBF middleweight title that was stripped from Jermain Taylor due to his legal problems. Golovkin has to hope that if Lemieux wins, Golden Boy Promotions, the promoters for Lemieux, will allow their fighter to face Golovkin in a unification fight.

Loeffler looking for big fight for Golovkin in the fall

1-golovkin3 (14)By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions says he’s looking to put a big fight together for Golovkin’s next fight in the fall. The original plan was to keep Golovkin as busy as possible fighting frequently in order to increase his market brand.

But for his next fight, Loeffler wants to get the biggest name possible for the popular Golovkin, and it’s going to take a little longer for Loeffler to find a suitable name for Golovkin to fight. Loeffler figures that it could take anywhere from September to November before Golovkin fights again.

Should Golovkin fight Erislandy Lara next?

EW5G0966(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Allan Fox: With WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (21-2-2, 12 KOs) calling out WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) for a fight, this could give Golovkin an interesting fight for August or possibly September if Lara’s adviser Al Haymon will allow the 32-year-old Lara to take the fight. Ever since Lara’s loss to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last year, Lara has been very vocal about wanting a big fight.

Recently, Lara has started calling out Golovkin for a big fight. It might not be the huge fight that Golovkin is looking for, but it would still give him the chance to show the difference between himself and Canelo, who struggled badly to beat Lara last year in July.

Calzaghe thinks Froch should fight Golovkin or DeGale soon

calzaghe66By Scott Gilfoid: Former super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe thinks that the soon to be 38-year-old former WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) needs to face top level opposition like Gennady Golovkin and/or James DeGale if he’s going to continue his career.

Calzaghe thinks that it’s going to be tough for Froch though because he’s burned up a year of his career sitting around doing absolutely nothing. If Froch does come back after a year, or possibly even more than that, it’s going to be tough on him due to the time he’s been sitting around.
