Loeffler looking for big fight for Golovkin in the fall

1-golovkin3 (14)By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions says he’s looking to put a big fight together for Golovkin’s next fight in the fall. The original plan was to keep Golovkin as busy as possible fighting frequently in order to increase his market brand.

But for his next fight, Loeffler wants to get the biggest name possible for the popular Golovkin, and it’s going to take a little longer for Loeffler to find a suitable name for Golovkin to fight. Loeffler figures that it could take anywhere from September to November before Golovkin fights again.

Last May, Golovkin stopped ESPN regular Willie Monroe Jr. in the 6th round. If Golovkin doesn’t fight until November, he’ll have been out of the ring for six months. That’s not a long time compared to some fighters, but it’s definitely a long time for Golovkin.

“We’re looking for the biggest fight possible for him [Golovkin],” Loeffler said to esnewsreporting. “The original plan was to bring him back in September. It might take a little bit longer than that to put a bigger fight on, and that’s our goal right now. He put on over 12,000 at the Forum [in Inglewood, California. He actually sold more tickets than Cotto did in New York, when Gennady fought at the Forum. I think Freddie knows who Gennady is right now. It’s going to be in the fall. It could be September, October or November. One of those dates, depending on the HBO schedule, the opponents we can get in the ring, and the venue. So we’re looking to put all the pieces together for the best fight,” Loeffler said.

Loeffler wants to match Golovkin up with former WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch next, but Froch has been unsure whether he wants to continue his pro career. If it takes Froch a little while longer for him to make a decision to continue his career, then it’s more than worthwhile for Golovkin and Loeffler to wait on him. A fight against Froch would give Golovkin a lot of notoriety on the world stage, as well as a big payday.

If Froch doesn’t take the fight, then the options for Golokvin are going to be fewer. He can’t sit and wait for the outcome of the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto fight because that bout likely won’t take place until September at the earliest. Even if they did fight each other then, the winner of that fight won’t be available to fight Golovkin until 2016.

The guys that would give Golovkin a good payday are fighters like Daniel Jacobs, Peter Quillin, or Andy Lee at middleweight. There’s no one at super middleweight besides Froch who would give Golovkin a big money fight. Erislandy Lara, the WBA junior middleweight champion, wants a fight against Golovkin, but that wouldn’t be a big fight. There’s no one at welterweight that would likely be interested in moving up in weight to fight Golovkin. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is who Golovkin would like to fight at 154, but Mayweather hasn’t mentioned wanting to fight the Kazakhstan fighter.
