Carl Froch retires, no Golovkin fight

By Scott Gilfoid: After enticing the boxing world with the possibility of fighting unbeaten knockout artist Gennady Golovkin in a fight that would have made millions, former IBF/WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) has opted to retire rather than stay on and take a fight that would have been a risky one but very profitable. The 38-year-old Froch announced his retirement today on his Twitter account, saying that he’s “officially retired.”

Golovkin would lose to Hopkins and Ward, says Kenny Porter

golovkin7744By Scott Gilfoid: Kenny Porter, the trainer for former IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter, sees IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) as not being an unstoppable force that can’t be beat, or can’t be stopped from his seven year knockout streak that he’s had going since 2008.

Porter specifically names the following fighters that can either beat Golovkin or give him some serious problems inside the ring: Andre Dirrell, Andre Ward, and Bernard Hopkins. Porter feels that Hopkins and Ward would straight beat Golovkin, and he also thinks that Dirrell would give him major problems as well.

Hopkins dares Golovkin to fight him at 175

hopkins556By Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Bernard Hopkins (55-7-2, 32 KOs) is saying he’d like to see WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) dare to be great by moving up two divisions to fight him at light heavyweight (175) rather than Hopkins move down to middleweight or a catch-weight at super middleweight.

Hopkins points out that in June of 2006, he moved up two divisions to fight IBO light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver and he beat him by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 118-109, 118-109 and 118-109.

Chavez Jr. targeting Golovkin, wants him at 168

chavez8(Photo Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: After talking up a fight against unbeaten WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) in the recent past on his Twitter account and then failing to fight him, former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-2-1, 32 KOs) is once again expressing interest in mixing it up with the hard hitting Kazakhstan star.

Chavez Jr. is saying that he’d like to fight Golovkin if he’s willing to come up all the way to the super middleweight division to fight him at the full weight for the class at 168 pounds. Golovkin is said to be willing to fight former IBF/WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch at 168, so there’s a possibility he might be interested in facing Chavez Jr. at that weight as well.

Mayweather-Golovkin response

golovkin94By Reveriano: I recently posted an article declaring that Gennady Golovkin vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. was the only viable fight. Predictably, I got a large amount of backlash by many boxing fans. Some of it was/is very valid and some of it was extremely childish. Nonetheless, I have taken the time to properly address some issues and further expand on my main theme.

The most common response I hear when I mention this fight is that we boxing fans will never be satisfied with Floyd Mayweather Jr. (and this can apply to other fighters like Miguel Cotto and Carl Froch).

Golovkin vs. Mayweather: The only fight worth watching

golovkin55555 By Reveriano: The biggest complaint about Boxing today is that it is no longer a viable sport. Long-term boxing fans, new fans, promoters, and even boxers themselves all agree that boxing is all business. Meaning that fighters (performers) only focus is to maximize their revenue throughout their career. Leaving us the viewer/payer with only one option.

Boxers such as Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Miguel Cotto have clearly stated that their health and career is the biggest concern for them. That they do not care about what the fan wants to see.

Loeffler: GGG would fight Ward on a 50-50 basis at 164

Golovkin1FBy Dan Ambrose: If WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) wants a big money fight against WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs), Ward will need to agree to a catch-weight of 164 pounds, and a purse split of 50-50, says Tom Loeffler, the promoter for Golovkin in an interview with ESPN’s Dan Rafael. Loeffler, however, thinks Ward, 31, still wants tune-up fights, as he’s only had one fight in a little over a year and a half.

Loeffler feels that Golovkin is the A-side in any negotiations with Ward, which means they would expect to get a good deal from the negotiations. However, it’s a doable fight as long as Ward is A. willing to accept a 50-50 deal. B Agreeable to a 164lb catch-weight. C. is ready to fight.

Rafael tells Froch, “Calzaghe would have fought GGG”

golovkin64By Scott Gilfoid: In the brief war of words that were exchanged between former super middleweight strap holder Car Froch and ESPN writer Dan Rafael last weekend, Rafael appears to have gotten the better of Froch by shaming him for name dropping Gennady Golovkin’s name without committing to a fight against him.

After Rafael told Froch to keep silent about Golovkin if he’s not really interested in fighting him, Rafael finished with a Tweet saying “Calzaghe would have fought GGG.” Froch never replied to this comment from Rafael, and it’s starting to look like Froch never will.

Froch fires back at Rafael over criticism about Golovkin fight

froch7999By Scott Gilfoid: It looks like Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) is the touchy one today after ESPN writer Dan Rafael told him to keep his gob shut if he’s not interested in really fighting WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs). Rafael blasted Froch over the Tweet that he sent out yesterday in which he said “Too big & too strong for GGG.”

The tweet was no big deal, but it became a big deal when Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler called Froch on his words by telling him to back it up in the ring against Golovkin in saying “Carl, there’s only one way to find out @eddieHearn @GGGBoxing.” Loeffler basically lobbed an underhand pitch to Froch and all he had to do was hit it out of the park by saying ‘Anytime, anywhere,’ as far as when he would face Golovkin. But did Froch do that? Nope! Froch clammed up entirely and said nothing for the rest of the day.
