Should Golovkin appease Andre Ward by fighting him at 168?

golovkin466677(Photo credit/Will Hart, K2 Promotions) By Allan Fox: It’s increasingly becoming more clear that if WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) wants a fight against WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (30-0, 15 KOs), Golovkin is going to have to face Ward at the full 168 pound weight for the super middleweight division.

According to Steve Kim, Ward won’t be meeting Golovkin halfway in a 50-50 scenario in a catch-weight at 164lbs in order to make it easier for the smaller Golovkin. The question now is whether Golovkin – and his promoter Tom Loeffler – are willing to let Ward be the A-side in the negotiations by giving him what he wants in the negotiations when it comes to weight.

Mayweather should fight Golovkin at 154, says Mancini

golovkin444By Allan Fox: Former world champion Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini thinks that WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) should come down to 154 to face WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) at a catch-weight in order to gain his respect and to give the fans a great fight.

Mancini has zero respect for Mayweather fighting Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) in his next fight on September 12th, if that’s who Mayweather winds up facing next. Mancini sees that fight as a waste of time for Mayweather because it’s such a mismatch.

Golovkin picks Canelo to beat Cotto

Canelo Alvarez vs Erislandy Lara(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Superstar Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) is picking former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) to come out victorious in his fight against WBC middleweight belt holder Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) next November on HBO.

Golovkin didn’t say why he feels that Canelo will be the one that gets the win in the Cotto-Canelo fight, but it’s likely die to Canelo’s combination of youth, speed and punching power. Cotto isn’t as fast, he’s older at 34, and he’s had a lot of wars in his many years in the ring.

De La Hoya interested in Golovkin-Lemieux fight

lemieux665By Dan Ambrose: IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux’s promoters Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions and Camille Estephan of Eye of the Tiger promotions are both interested in potentially setting up a unification fight between Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs) and WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) for the 26-year-old Lemieux’s next fight.

Lemieux has a mandatory defense due against the winner of the Tureano Johnson vs. Eamonn O’Kane IBF 160lb eliminator bout, but Lemieux can bypass that fight by facing Golovkin instead. The IBF has already said the unification match between Golovkin and Lemieux can take place next.

Golovkin doesn’t think he’s too big to fight Mayweather

golovkin667By Dan Ambrose:
WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golokvin (33-0, 30 KOs) says he’s a small middleweight, and is more than capable of fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. by coming down to 154 to make the fight happen. Golovkin was amused recently to learn that Mayweather thinks he would beat him without any problems. Golovkin would like to get a chance to fight Mayweather to test whether he is too good or not.

“He’s [Mayweather] a great champion,” Golovkin said to ESPN’s SportnNation. “Look at me, I’m not big. My last couple of fights I’m 158, 159. This is possible for me. I’m going to 154 just for Floyd. I understand this is the biggest fight in the world.”

Andre Ward wants Golovkin fight now

ward5By Dan Ambrose: If WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) gets his way, he’ll be facing WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) next in a fight that would likely be on pay-per-view on HBO. Ward, 31, says he’s available for the fight against Golovkin right now. Ward says he’s currently walking around at 180lbs, according to Fightnews. He’s not too heavy right now to get down to 164 for a catch-weight fight against Golovkin. That’ll change though once Ward goes up to light heavyweight to start looking for big fights in that division.

Golovkin rehydrates to 170lbs for his fights, so he’d be likely giving away 10lbs or perhaps a little more than that depending on how high Ward rehydrates up to. Neither fighter has a scheduled fight on their plate at the moment.

Ward’s camp wants Golovkin fight this fall, then Kovalev

ward53543(Photo credit: Tom Hogan – Hoganphotos/Roc Nation Sports) By Dan Ambrose: Andre Ward’s camp are reportedly interested in setting him up with a fight against WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) this fall, according to Dan Rafael. After that, they want to move Ward up to 175 for him to face IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev.

The idea is go tight Golovkin at whatever catch-weight that he can get for the fight, and then move up in weight. They don’t want Ward to move up in weight to take the Kovalev fight first and then have to move down in weight to face Golovkin. It would obviously be hard on Ward to move back down after he moves up to 175 for the Kovalev fight.

Ward vs. GGG: who’s really the A-side?

golovkin64By Greg Harris: Over the last few months, talks of a potential clash between unbeaten champions Andre Ward, and Gennady Golovkin have began to seriously heat up in the boxing world. Golovkin is the darling of HBO boxing, and considered the A-side fighter in the eyes of many boxing fans.

Golovkin is also the undefeated WBA, and the IBO middleweight champion. Andre Ward on the other hand is considered the best boxer in the world pound for pound by some, and the true A-side fighter of this fight by many boxing fans as well. He is also the undefeated WBA super middleweight champion. Obviously a fight between these two would be one of the best fights to be made for boxing in 2015. But in this day in age of prize fighting.

Golovkin expected back in the ring before end of 2015

golovin1By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) will be out of action for at least another three more months at the minimum, as HBO won’t be televising any boxing in August or September for some reason. They plan on taking the remainder of the summer off after July.

Its bad news for boxing fans who specifically subscribe to HBO in order to get their fix for the sport. With them taking off two months out of 12 months, it’s not great news for the fans that shell out money to subscribe to the network.

Will Froch be remembered for being too big too strong for Golovkin?

froch#5By Gerardo Granados: WBA/IBF Super Middleweight Champion Carl Froch W33(24)-L2-D0 announced his retirement today and a friend of mine asked me if he was going to be remembered as one of the greatest British boxers or would he be remembered for have avoided GGG Golovkin. Just a week ago Froch posted on twitter a photo of him saying he was too big too strong for Gennady which lead to an argument with ESPN boxing analyst Dan Rafael, even today Rafael twitted a farewell retirement to Froch.

It seems like we will never know if The Cobra was really too big too strong for today’s best middleweight GGG Golovkin; but when the champion is challenged then he cannot be asked for any catch weight conditioning the bout.
