Lee Selby vs. Fernando Montiel: is it a competitive bout for you?

montiel334By Gerardo Granados: Everybody is entitle to his own opinion but I think that fellow Boxingnews24 writer Scott Gilfoid might have rushed to write off Kochulito Montiel before he fights IBF featherweight title holder Lee Selby next October 14. I am willing to bet to Mr. Gilfoid 3 to 1 that Fernando Montiel will win; if I lose I won’t write or post any article for three months and if Gilfoid loses then he doesn’t gets to write or post for only one month.

This bout isn’t only the first defense of Selby´s IBF feather belt; it is also the last chance that Montiel might get to win his fourth divisional title which would allow him to become only the fourth Mexican fighter to achieve such feat.

Lee Selby to face Fernando Montiel on October 14th on PBC

montiel3434By Scott Gilfoid: IBF featherweight champion Lee Selby (21-1, 8 KOs) will be making a soft defense for his first title defense of his IBF 126lb strap on October 14th when he faces 36-year-old former three division world champion Fernando Montiel (54-4-2, 39 KOs) on Premier Boxing Champions on a still to be determined network and venue.

I think this is a really bad match-up. Montiel is a little guy who hasn’t done a thing with his career since being knocked out by Nonito Donaire. Yeah, Montiel has won a number of fights since then, but against just awful record-padding opposition.

Fernando Kochulito Montiel vs Evgeny Gradovich: possible matchup on 2015

montiel335353By Gerardo Granados: It was reported by ESPN Boxing analyst Salvador Rodriguez that next March 21 there is a strong possibility that the former three division champion Fernando Montiel W53(39)-L4-D2 will fight against featherweight contender Mauricio Muñoz W29(13)-L6-D0, the venue has yet to be confirmed but it could be at Hermosillo or Ciudad Obregon, Sonora (Mexico) . Also according to Montiel´s twitter account the fight is on.

On this fight Montiel will risk the chance to dispute the IBF feather belt held by the Mexican Russian Evgeny Gradovich (who has a mandatory defense against the always dangerous TBA) so Kochulito must win his bout against Mauricio Muñoz and better not be overconfident making plans ahead before defeating a hungry adversary who has very little to lose and a lot to win.

Montiel vs. Padua this Saturday, June 22nd in Guerrero, Mexico

montiel34234243By Eric Thomas: Super bantamweight Fernando Montiel (49-4-2, 37 KO’s) will be facing Jaderes Padua (8-2-1, 5 KO’s) this Saturday night in a scheduled 12 round bout in Hotel Azul Ixtapa, Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, Mexico.

Montiel, 34, is trying to turn his career around to get another title shot against one of the super bantamweight champions. However, Montiel hasn’t been looking good as of late, as we saw in his last fight against little known Giovanni Caro last November where Montiel had to struggle hard to win a narrow 12 round unanimous decision over him.

Fernando Montiel vs. Jaderes Pandua on June 22nd in Guerrero, Mexico

montiel556By Chris Williams: Former three division world champion Fernando Montiel (49-4-2, 37 KO’s) will be fighting on June 22nd against the much less experienced Jaderes Padua (8-2-1, 5 KO’s) for the vacant WBC International super bantamweight title. Montiel, #7 WBO, #10 WBC, wants to go after a forth division world title. He’s previously captured world titles at flyweight, super flyweight and bantamweight.

The problem is he’s not a big fighter for the super bantamweight division, and he’s already been beaten by Victor Terrazas by a close 12 round unanimous decision two years ago in November 2011. Terrazas now holds the WBC super bantamweight title and he would seem to be one of two champions that Montiel would have a chance to beat at 122; the other being IBF super bantamweight champion Jhonatan Romero. As far as the WBA/WBO champion Guillermo Rigondeaux, Montiel has no chance at all of beating him and he would be making a big mistake if he were to try to fight him.

Fernando Montiel wants Abner Mares

Image: Fernando Montiel wants Abner MaresBy Dan Ambrose: Former three division world champion Fernando Montiel (48-4-2, 37 KO’s) wants a shot against WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares (25-0-1, 13 KO’s), according to wbcboxing.com website. Montiel, 33, is hoping to get that fight and he thinks he can beat the 26-year-old Mares if given the chance.

Montiel has a coming up this month on November 24th against Giovanni Caro (24-11-4, 19 KO’s) for the vacant WBC United States (USNBC) Silver super bantamweight title at the Gimnasio Nacional Josue Neri Santos, Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico. As obscure as that strap is don’t be surprised if a win over the little known Caro vaults Montiel to #1 in the World Boxing Council rankings almost immediately. Montiel is already ranked #9 by the WBC, and picking up the the WBC United States Silver strap could be all that Montiel needs to get a fight with Mares.

Fernando Montiel vs. Giovanni Caro on November 24th

Image: Fernando Montiel vs. Giovanni Caro on November 24thBy Allan Fox: Former three division world champion Fernando Montiel (48-4-2, 37 KO’s) will be back in the ring on November 24th against journeyman Giovanni Caro (24-11-4, 19 KO’s) in a bout at the Gimnasio Nacional Josue Neri Santos, Chihuahua, Mexico. Caro, 28, has lost three out of his last five fights and should be an easy mark for the 33-year-old Montiel, who has definitely seen better days himself.

Montiel has lost two out of his last five fights, suffering a crushing 2nd round knockout defeat to Nonito Donaire last year in February, and then losing to Victor Terrazas by a 12 round unanimous decision last November. #4 WBC, Montiel has come back to win his last two fights against Angky Angkota and Arturo Santos Reyes this year, but he’s not looked great in either fight. The 5’4″ Montiel doesn’t have the size to be fighting at super bantamweight and clearly doesn’t belong in this weight class.

Fernando Montiel: The Latest Addition to the Cream of the Crop at 122 lb’s

Image: Fernando Montiel: The Boxing News 24 Addition to the Cream of the Crop at 122 lb'sby Bradley Pearson: This Saturday saw the 46th win of Fernando Montiel’s professional career, as he staked his claim into the super bantamweight division with a bang. Montiel (46-3-2, 36 KO’s) sent his Nicaraguan counterpart Alvaro Perez (21-4-1, 12 KO’s) to the canvas with a combination in the 3rd round earning the stoppage victory in the Mexican’s second fight in just two months- bidding to put the devastating knockout loss suffered at the hands of Nonito Donaire, behind him.

It was a good win but a weak opponent for the 32-year-old Montiel.
