montiel335353By Gerardo Granados: It was reported by ESPN Boxing analyst Salvador Rodriguez that next March 21 there is a strong possibility that the former three division champion Fernando Montiel W53(39)-L4-D2 will fight against featherweight contender Mauricio Muñoz W29(13)-L6-D0, the venue has yet to be confirmed but it could be at Hermosillo or Ciudad Obregon, Sonora (Mexico) . Also according to Montiel´s twitter account the fight is on.

On this fight Montiel will risk the chance to dispute the IBF feather belt held by the Mexican Russian Evgeny Gradovich (who has a mandatory defense against the always dangerous TBA) so Kochulito must win his bout against Mauricio Muñoz and better not be overconfident making plans ahead before defeating a hungry adversary who has very little to lose and a lot to win.

Next to Abner Mares, Fernando Montiel former WBO fly – WBO super fly – WBO & WBC bantam champion has the chance to become only the fourth Mexican boxer to achieve four weight division championships, joining Jorge Arce and boxing legends Juan Manuel Marquez and Erik Morales. At age 35 Montiel can’t afford to lose his next bout and by consequence the possible match against Gradovich, which could be his last chance to achieve a feat that only a few mean sons of boxing have achieved.

It’s been a long time since Montiel got the opportunity to dispute a championship title. Way back in December of 2000 a then young hungry lion defeated Isidro Garcia to claim the WBO flyweight crown. Back then Montiel was only 21 years old, now at 35 years of age and a title fight record of W17(13)-L3-D0 the ring experience and a good game plan will be the key for success on his next two fights. Montiel is a top ten all time Mexican fighter and his loses came against good opposition: Marc Johnson, Jhonny Gonzalez and Nonito Donaire; I bet Kochulito can stop Gradovich on the late rounds if they were to fight this year.
