Montiel to be back in action by the summer

Image: Montiel to be back in action by the summerBy Chris Williams: Former WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel (44-3-2, 34 KO’s) will be returning to the ring by summer at the latest to resume his boxing career and put his loss to Nonito Donaire behind him. Hopefully, this is enough time for Montiel to recover from the knockout loss and the subsequent surgery to repair his fractured right cheekbone. For a knockout like the one that Montiel suffered, he might be wiser to take more time off to heal.

Donaire looked huge compared to the tiny Montiel

Image: Donaire looked huge compared to the tiny MontielBy Chris Williams: Photo credit Sumio Yamada – If you look at last night’s fight between Nonito Donaire (26-1, 18 KO’s) and WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel (42-3-2, 34 KO’s), you’ll notice immediately how much bigger the 5’6″ Donaire was compared to the 5’4″ Montiel. It’s more than just height. Donaire looked huge in terms of weight and frame size compared to the tiny Montiel. Just by looking at the two, my guess is Donaire had at the minimum a 15 pound weight advantage over Montiel.

That’s like a fighter three divisions above Montiel taking him on and dominating on size alone. Seriously, look at how much bigger Donaire was compared to Montiel in this fight and you’ll see what I’m seeing. Donaire looked like one of the Klitschko brothers taking on their customary much smaller opponents. What do you expect is going to happen when you got a big hulking Donaire taking on a guy that struggled to make bantamweight and had to boil down in the past couple of weeks just to make the weight.

Image: Fernando Montiel fails to deliver: Montiel looked pale, stale, weak, stiff, and slowBy Francisco Hernandez: Photo credit Zanfer boxing – Last night at the Mandalay Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, a pale looking Fernando Montiel looked too weak and stale, extremely slow and stiff to put up much of a fight against Nonito Donaire. Montiel had the effervescence of a stale Corona beer that has been left open for a few days. Rumors had spread before the fight that Fernando was not able to make the bantamweight limit any longer and was over training to an extreme to try and make the weight limit.
