Berto-Ortiz, Montiel-Lara make weight

Image: Berto-Ortiz, Montiel-Lara make weight(Photo Credit: Suzanne Teresa/Premier Boxing Champions) By Dan Ambrose: Andre Berto (30-4, 23 KOs) and Victor Ortiz (31-5-2, 24 KOs) made weight on Friday for their non-title fight on Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Berto weighed in at 146.8lbs and Ortiz also weighed in at 146.8lbs. Ortiz looked very drained at the weigh-in.

That makes you wonder how much weight he’ll be putting back on overnight. Berto could be dealing with a super middleweight by the time he gets in the ring tomorrow night. Ortiz looks like he’s going to rehydrate well into the 160s. He’s been training hard obviously, but it’s possible that Ortiz has grown out of the welterweight division at the age of 29.

Ortiz-Berto, Rodriguez-Williams & Montiel-Lara on 4/30

ortiz700By Dan Ambrose: It’s finally a done deal; former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (31-5-2 24 KOs) will be battling 32-year-old Andre Berto (30-4, 23 KOs) on April 30th in a long awaited rematch on Premier Boxing Champions on Fox and Fox Deportes from the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

The two originally fought each other five years ago in 2011, when the two of them were still in the prime of their careers. Now five years later, Ortiz and Berto are arguably over-the-hill and no longer truly relevant in the 147lb division.

Abner Mares faces Fernando Montiel on 3/12 on Thurman-Porter card

Image: Abner Mares faces Fernando Montiel on 3/12 on Thurman-Porter cardBy Dan Ambrose: Former three division world champion Abner Mares (29-2-1, 15 KOs) will be looking to bounce back from a loss in his last fight against Leo Santa Cruz when he faces 36-year-old former three division world champion Fernando Montiel (54-5-2, 39 KOs) in a 10-round scheduled fight in featherweight action on March 12 on Premier Boxing Champions on CBS from the Mohegan Sun Casino, in Uncasville, Connecticut.

It’s unclear why Mares, #2 WBC, #3 WBA, is going back to fighting weak opposition once again by facing the well past his best #14 WBC Montiel. Mares, 30, chewed up a year and a half of his career fighting weaker opposition following a 1st round knockout loss to Jhonny Gonzalez in 2013.

Martinez decisions Alexander; Selby defeats Montiel – Live Results

EW5G6759(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/PBC) By Scott Gilfoid: We may have seen former two division world champion Devon Alexander’s career effectively ended tonight with him losing a 10 round unanimous decision to journeyman Aaron Martinez (20-4-1, 4 KOs) on Wednesday night on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN from the Gila River Arena, in Glendale, Arizona. The final judges’ scores were 96-94, 97-93 and 97-93, all for Martinez.

You hate to say that Alexander’s career is over with, but with him losing 3 out of his last 4 fights, I think you can make an argument for that possibility. Alexander’s punishing loss to Shawn Porter in 2013 seems to have taken something out of him because he hasn’t looked the same since then. Alexander was beaten by Amir Khan by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision last December. Alexander then stayed out of the ring for 10 months until coming back to fight Martinez tonight. Alexander looked worse in this fight than he did in the Khan fight if you can believe it.

Selby expecting tough fight against Montiel

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TywUpBYBsb8

By Scott Gilfoid: IBF World featherweight champion Lee Selby (21-1, 8 KOs) will be facing the aging 36-year-old former three division world champion Fernando Montiel (54-4-2, 39 KOs) tomorrow night on Wednesday on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN from the Gila River Arena, in Glendale, Arizona.

This is a fight that is hard to really like because of Montiel being so much smaller and older than Selby. The 5’4” Montiel started his career out as a flyweight, and it was only recently that he moved up to featherweight. #10 IBF Montiel clearly doesn’t belong in the ring with someone as tall as the 5’8 ½” Selby.

YouTube video

By Matt Plumridge: IBF featherweight belt holder Lee Selby (21-1, 8 KOs) is set for his US debut when he takes on former three-weight world champion Fernando Montiel (54-4-2, 39 KOs) in the latest installment of the PBC boxing series this coming Wednesday at the Gila River Arena, in Glendale, Arizona.

Selby, who beat IBF Fighter of the Year Evgeny Gradovich to take the crown in May, has been keen to match his fighting talk with his actual fights when stating that he was only keen on being involved in tough defences in order to establish himself as a top level world champion.

Lee Selby wants to fight all the top featherweights

selby45By Scott Gilfoid: Now that Lee Selby (21-1, 8 KOs) has the IBF featherweight title in his possession, he says he wants to fight all the top featherweights in the division like Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares. Selby says he wants to fight the top dogs, but unfortunately he’s not doing that for his next fight.

Selby is taking on the aging 36-year-old former flyweight Fernando Montiel (54-4-2, 39 KOs) on October 14th on Premier Boxing Champions at the Gila River Arena, in Glendale, Arizona. This fight is the equivalent of Selby facing little Jorge Arce, a fighter who also started his career out in the flyweight division.
