By Eric Baldwin: Unbeaten #1 WBO lightweight contender Felix Verdejo (22-0, 15 KOs) will be back in action in less than two months against an opponent still to be determined on February 3 in a fight that will be shown on UniMas Solo Boxeo Tecate series. The venue still hasn’t been decided either.

The 23-year-old Verdejo last fought in June of this year after beating Juan Jose Martinez by a 5th round knockout. Verdejo’s promoter had hoped of getting him a title shot by now against WBO lightweight champion Terry Flanagan. Unfortunately, Verdejo was injured in a motorcycle accident last summer in August, and he’s been out of the ring ever since.

By Allan Fox: Felix Verdejo has reportedly been released from the hospital according to Dan Rafael. Unbeaten lightweight contender Verdejo (22-0, 15 KOs) has been hospitalized since last Sunday after crashing his motorcycle. Fortunately for Verdejo, 23, has wasn’t seriously injured in the accident. However, he was hurt badly enough to be hospitalized up until now.

“Per Top Rank Boxing publicist Glady Lopez, Diamante Verdejo was released this evening from the hospital,” said Rafael on his Twitter.

By Allan Fox: Felix Verdejo was reportedly injured in a motorcycle accident on Sunday in Puerto Rico. Verdejo (22-0, 15 KOs), rated #1 by the World Boxing Organization in the lightweight division, was hospitalized in San Juan, Puerto Rico, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. The 23-year-old Verdejo is in stable condition after suffering injuries to his head, face and left arm.

It’s unclear how serious the injuries are and whether they’ll keep him out of the ring. Verdejo was on course to get a title shot against unbeaten WBO lightweight champion Terry Flanagan this year in November.

The Verdejo-Martinez fight is the co-feature bout on the Vasyl Lomachenko vs. Roman “Rocky” Martinez card.

The World Boxing Organization ranks Verdejo highly at #2 at lightweight. He cannot afford to lose this fight if he wants to keep in place for an eventual title shot against WBO lightweight champion Terry Flanagan.

By Dan Ambrose: WBO super featherweight champion Roman “Rocky” Martinez (29-2-3, 17 KOs) made weight on Friday in coming in at 129.8 pounds at his weigh-in for his title defense against featherweight Vasyl Lomachenko (5-1, 3 KOs) this Saturday night on HBO Boxing After Dark [BAD] at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Lomachenko, 28, weighed in at 129.6lbs. He’s seen as the favorite to defeat the 33-year-old Martinez in the eyes of many boxing fans. It’s to see why. Lomachenko has looked good in his recent fights in beating his last four opponents Romulo Koasicha, Gamalier Rodriguez, Chonalatum Piriyapinyo and Gary Russell Jr.

The 22-year-old Verdejo badly needs to look good in this fight because there are already whispers that the Puerto Rican fighter isn’t what many boxing fans thought he was going to be when he turned pro four years ago in 2012.

verdejo67By Dan Ambrose: Undefeated lightweight contender Felix Verdejo (20-0, 14 KOs) will be returning to the ring on April 16 to face Daniel Evangelista (18-6-2, 14 KOs) in a Solo Boxero Tecate card at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Evangelista Jr, 25, has lost three out of his last five fights. However, he’s not supposed to be a competitive opponent. The 22-year-old Verdejo can’ afford to suffer an injury against Evangelista Jr., because Top Rank promoter Bob Arum expects to bring him back on June 11 against Jose Felix Jr. (33-1-1, 25 Kos) at Madison Square Garden in New York.

That will be Verdejo’s first real test of his career. That fight will be televised on HBO.

Verdejo defeats Silva, fails to impress

verdejo11By Chris Williams: WBO Latino lightweight champion Felix Verdejo (20-0, 14 KOs) had to struggle to beat challenger William Silva (23-1, 14 KOs) by a 10 round unanimous decision on Saturday night in a fight televised by HBO Championship Boxing at Madison Square Garden in New York. The final judges’ scores were 100-90, 100-90 and 99-91.

Verdjo had problems with Silva’s height, reach and pressure in this fight. Silva was able to land some nice shots and avoid Verdejo’s punches all night long. Verdejo was still able to land some big shots in every round, but it was always single shots and never combinations.
