Ward – Rodriguez: let it happen!

rodriguez44By Forin: WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s) seems to be having a hard time getting Edwin Rodriguez (24-0, 16 KO’s) to agree to fight him on HBO. Rodriguez is reportedly demanding in excess of $ 1 million to take the fight which Ward says is not going to happen. Since everyone is entitled to price themselves the way they see fit, I am not going to comment on the financial side of this proposed match up.

What I do want to say is that this fight would definitely be more than a “total mismatch” as one particular writer likes to call it. HBO is really pushing for this fight to happen and trust me, HBO are not stupid, they like this fight for a reason.

When you think about it, Lucian Bute struggled for 12 rounds in winning a controversial decision over Denis Grachev, while Rodriguez destroyed Grachev in round 1 of their July fight in Monte Carlo.

Andre Ward: Edwin Rodriguez’s team is asking for $1 million plus for fight

ward55By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s) says that unbeaten, #1 WBC, #3 WBA, #3 IBF, #6 WBO, Edwin Rodriguez (24-0, 16 KO’s) wants $1 million plus in order for Ward to face him in what would be pretty much little more than a high caliber tune-up bout on HBO. Ward says his team already gave Rodriguez a perfectly reasonable offer, which wasn’t far from what Rodriguez’s team wants, but it was turned down. Rodriguez won’t get the $1 million plus that he’s asking for, says Ward.

Ward told RingTV “We put up a number, and the number is more than Rodriguez made in his last fight, and it’s more than he’s made in his whole career, and it’s a good number. But his team is asking for $1 million plus, and that’s just not going to happen.”

Rodriguez destroys Grachev in 1st round TKO

rodriguez3By Allan Fox: Undefeated super middleweight contender Edwin Rodriguez (24-0, 16 KO’s) never even gave Russian fighter Denis Grachev (13-2-1, 8 KO’s) a chance tonight in blowing him out in a 1st round TKO win at the Salle des etoiles, in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Rodriguez knocked Grachev down twice in the round, and got the stoppage after nailing him with two hard looping right hands that nailed Grachev in the back of the head, causing him to stumble into the ropes. Referee Stanley Christodolou then halted the fight at 2:50 in seeing how badly Grachev was hurt.

Rodriguez wins $600,000 win this victory. No doubt the money on the line had Rodriguez fighting a lot harder than he’s shown in his recent fights. He’s not normally seen as a slugger, but tonight he went after Grachev and was nailing him with big shots.

Ishida has a good chin and he might be able to go the full 12 rounds, but it’s going to be dramatically one-sided because Ishida doesn’t have the power to compete.

Lucian Bute vs. Edwin Rodriguez possible for March, 2013

bute554By Scott Gilfoid: With it looking more and more like IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch will elect to fight a rematch against Mikkel Kessler in early 2013, this leaves former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (31-1, 24 KO’s) without an opponent for early 2013. However, the talented 32-year-old Bute could end up facing unbeaten #3 IBF, #5 WBC, #8 WBA, Edwin Rodriguez (22-0, 15 KO’s) in March 2013.

There’s talk that Bute will take that fight to keep busy while he waits for Froch to face Kessler and whatever comes of that fight. I expect Froch to get whipped again by Kessler, and then it’ll set up a Froch-Bute rematch in less than spectacular conditions.

Lucian Bute vs. Edwin Rodriguez possible for March

Image: Lucian Bute vs. Edwin Rodriguez possible for MarchBy Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute could wind up fighting unbeaten contender Edwin Rodriguez (22-0, 15 KO’s) in March, so that IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch can get badly desired rematch against Mikkel Kessler, says Dan Rafael. None of this will work unless the International Federation give Froch an exception to get out of having to fight his mandatory challenger Adonis Stevenson next.

If they say no then Froch has to fight Stevenson, and that’s a dangerous fight for Froch. But if Froch can get the Kessler fight, then Bute will stay busy fighting Edwin Rodriguez in March.

Golovkin will now be fighting either Edwin Rodriguez (22-0, 15 KO’s) or Thomas Oosthuizen (20-0-1, 13 KO’s) on January 19th at Madison Square Garden in New York, according to Dan Rafael.
