Image: Lucian Bute vs. Edwin Rodriguez possible for MarchBy Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute could wind up fighting unbeaten contender Edwin Rodriguez (22-0, 15 KO’s) in March, so that IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch can get badly desired rematch against Mikkel Kessler, says Dan Rafael. None of this will work unless the International Federation give Froch an exception to get out of having to fight his mandatory challenger Adonis Stevenson next.

If they say no then Froch has to fight Stevenson, and that’s a dangerous fight for Froch. But if Froch can get the Kessler fight, then Bute will stay busy fighting Edwin Rodriguez in March.

Kessler will have to do his part to get the rematch with Froch by defeating WBA super middleweight champion Brian Magee in their fight next Saturday night on December 8th in Denmark. If Kessler loses that fight then he can forget about the Froch rematch. I’m just wondering whether Kessler is all that interested in fighting Froch right away. If Kessler gets past Magee, and that’s a big IF, Kessler can get a nice easy money fight against WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham. That’s easy money for Kessler, and I find it hard to believe he’d turn it down if it were offered to him.

Froch-Kessler rematch will make a lot of money, but I don’t see Kessler taking that fight until he’s exhausted all the easy fights he can. It’s been a while since Kessler held a world title, and I’m guessing he’ll want to go on a milking run by facing the easiest options he can to prolong the time that he’s in possession of the WBA belt. We likely won’t see Kessler in with Froch, Andre Ward or the Dirrell brothers.

Kessler has some options available to him if he can pick the WBA belt from Magee. Kessler can defend the strap against George Groves, Dimitri Sartison and Kelly Pavlik. There’a a whole bunch of easy marks out there for Kessler to milk the title. He doesn’t need Froch, and I think Froch is going to be waiting a long, long time if he thinks that Kessler’s going to fight him again.
