Weights: Garcia-Herrera and Wilder-Scott

By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (27-0, 16 KO’s) weighed in today successfully for his title defense on Saturday night against Mauricio Herrera (20-3, 7 KO’s) at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Garcia weighed 139.75 lbs, while Herrera came in at 139.25 lbs. Garcia looked thin like he’d dropped a lot of weight to make 140 lb limit.

Schaefer: Danny Garcia vs. Mauricio Herrera is a terrific match-up

garcia77By Dan Ambrose: This Saturday night WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (27-0, 16 KO’s) will be defending his titles against #4 WBA, #10 WBC contender Mauricio Herrera (20-3, 7 KO’s) on Showtime from the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico. While this is technically a title defense for Garcia, it’s viewed more as a tune-up/stay busy fight by hardcore fans, who have shown very little interest in this fight for obvious reasons.

I’m surprised Showtime is televising the Garcia-Herrera fight as the main event this Saturday because there is absolutely no interest in this fight among boxing fans in the internet forums. Showtime vice president Stephen Espinoza should have gotten the drift by now that this isn’t a fight that fans are excited about and instead replaced this fight with the Juan Manuel Lopez vs. the Daniel Ponce de Leon in the main event, and then Deontay Wilder vs. Malik Scott as the co-feature bout.

Danny Garcia talks Mauricio Herrera fight

Philadelphia, PA (Feb. 26, 2014) – Undefeated Unified Super Lightweight World Champion Danny Garcia (27-0, 16 KOs), of Philadelphia, and his father/trainer, Angel Garcia, hosted an open media workout on Wednesday at the DSG Boxing Gym in Philadelphia. Garcia-Herrera: Danny needs to step it up after this mismatch

garcia564By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (27-0, 16 KO’s) will be taking a step back from facing dangerous opposition next month when he faces Mauricio Herrera (20-3, 7 KO’s) on March 15th at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Garcia recently defeated former WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse by a clinch-filled 12 round decision last September.

Garcia needs to keep facing quality opposition if he wants to make a case that he deserves a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. The worst thing that Garcia can do is to step back from good opponents and go back to the lower level opposition that he was fighting earlier in his career.

Angel Garcia not worried if Mayweather doesn’t fight Danny

garcia434By Dan Ambrose: Angel Garcia, the father/trainer of WBA/WBC light welterweight Danny Garcia (27-0, 16 KO’s). says he’s not worried if Floyd Mayweather Jr. chooses not to fight Danny anytime soon. Angel believes that Mayweather has earned the right to fight whoever he wants due to his years of being on the top of the sport. Angel says Danny will be creating his own legacy. Of course, some fans feel that the reason why Danny and Angel aren’t worried about not fighting Mayweather is because Danny will likely get badly beaten by him and exposed.

Some fans think that Angel is having Danny wait Mayweather out until he retires from boxing so that he can try and take over Mayweather’s spot at the top of the throne. Getting beaten by Mayweather while he’s still around will make it all but impossible for Danny to become a huge start because it’ll take too many years to make fans forget about how badly Mayweather beat him, and by then there will be better fighters than Danny at 140 that can dominate the division.

Danny Garcia: Puerto Rican boxing needs this fight [Herrera] right now

Danny Garcia and Mauricio Hernandez(Photo credit: Ester Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (27-0, 16 KO’s) is facing what almost a tune-up caliber opponent on March 15th against Mauricio Herrera (20-3, 7 KO’s) at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Herrera has lost 2 out of his last 4 fights, and he seems to have been picked out for what he did in the past when he beat Ruslan Provodnikov many moons ago in 2011. A lot of things have changed since then for Herrera. He’s been beaten by Karim Mayfield and Mike Alvarado.

Garcia has chosen to fight in Puerto Rico where his parents came from. That’s fine, but why didn’t Garcia pick someone a lot better than Herrera? I’m still trying to understand his choice of opponent. If he really wanted to create the best impression with his parent’s people, then why didn’t he select someone that actually has a chance to beat him like Lucas Matthysse instead of someone that has lost 2 out of his last 4 fights?

What’s with Golden Boy?

garcia3By Duke Pahulu: After Lamont Peterson’s solid rebound from his KO loss to Lucas Matthysee in 2013, the stage was set for Peterson to challenge Danny Garcia for his 140 Ring Title. Unlike most times when fighters are put on the spot, Peterson said what the boxing public wanted by challenging Danny Garcia for all the marbles at 140. This was great news since there were rumblings of Garcia taking a fight against Mauricio Herrera.

Herrera is a solid junior welter but not worthy of challenging the champ. Plus the Herrera fight doesn’t build on the momentum of Garcia’s best win to date against Lucas Matthysse. I thought the reason why Floyd Mayweather Jr. put the Garcia-Matthysee fight on the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez undercard was to hype up his next opponent which would be the winner of the bout. Great business move since Golden Boy failed to keep Miguel Cotto and build him up for a Floyd rematch to give Showtime another big PPV event. Garcia turned in his best performance to date by undressing the KO machine with deft movement, defense, and a solid jab.

Garcia-Herrera, Wilder-Scott and Lopez-De Leon on March 15th in Bayamon, Puerto Rico

garcia564By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (27-0, 16 KO’s) will be making his next title defense against #11 IBF Mauricio Herrera (20-3, 7 KO’s) on March 15th at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico. This fight card would have been better off taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The undercard will have unbeaten heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (30-0, 30 KO’s) facing former contender Malik Scott (36-1-1, 13 KO’s) in a 10 round bout. There’s also former two division world champion Juan Manuel Lopez (33-3, 30 KO’s) facing 33-year-old former two division world champion Daniel Ponce De Leon (45-5, 35 KO’s) in a rematch scheduled for 10 rounds.

Lamont Peterson wants Danny Garcia unification bout next

001 Peterson vs Jean IMG_4962(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Eric Thomas: Following his 12 round unanimous decision win over the inexperienced and badly over-matched challenger Dierry Jean (25-1, 17 KO’s) last night at the DC Armory in Washington, DC, IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (32-2-1, 16 KO’s) is gunning for WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia in a unification bot. Peterson wants that fight a lot if his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions can put that fight together.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is interested in matching Peterson with Danny Garcia or in a rematch against Lucas Matthysse, who stopped Peterson in the 3rd round in May of last year. Schaefer also says he can find a lot of fights for Peterson if he decides to move up in weight to the welterweight division for his next fight.

Danny Garcia vs. Mauricio Herrera possible for March 15th

garcia5645By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions has signed #4 WBA, #11 IBF Mauricio Herrera (20-3, 7 KO’s) to a contract and it’s possible that the 33-year-old Herrera could be the next opponent for WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (27-0, 16 KO’s) on March 15th at a still to be determined venue. Garcia just beat Lucas Matthysse in his last fight in September, and there’s no interest in making a rematch.

So instead of fighting Matthysse again, Garcia could be looking at a fight with Herrera. Unfortunately this isn’t a great fight. Herrera has last 2 out of his last 4 fights in defeats to Karim Mayfield and Mike Alvarado, and he hardly deserves a world title shot based on that many defeats in his last four fights. It’s like giving Amir Khan a title shot against Floyd Mayweather Jr. for losing 2 out of his last 4 fights.
