Danny Garcia vs. Mauricio Herrera: Was open scoring a factor?

garcia14By Gerardo Granados: Last Saturday night at Bayamon, Puerto Rico; we got the chance to see a good fight. In theory it wasn’t supposed to be too difficult for the WBA-WBC light welterweight belt holder Danny Garcia (W28-L0-D0), but the challenger Mauricio Herrera (W20-L4-D0) proved to be a good boxer and put up a great performance. The fight was very competitive and there were hard rounds to score, at the end I scored it even 114-114 with two close rounds that could have gone to either fighter.

But was it a major factor to have had the “open scoring”? This system has been criticized by boxing fans, even boxing analyst and authorities can´t find consensus on its effective use. When Saul Alvarez defeated Austin Trout some believed that it hurt Trout to know he was behind on the score cards, last Saturday night when the score cards were announced in the fourth and eight rounds I believe it didn’t influenced negatively the performance of both fighters.

The time for boxing reform was Saturday

By Bradley Dee: How many ridiculous decisions can one sport have before something is done about it? I’ll give you the answer after Saturday. Unlimited. I started watching boxing probably in my early twenties. I started later than some, although I do consider myself a diehard rabid fan enough that I watch all the meaningless fights and co-features.

Danny Garcia: Moving up to 147 will rejuvenate my career

garcia677By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (28-0, 16 KO’s) came out the winner last Saturday night in beating Maurico Herrera (20-4, 7 KO’s) by a questionable 12 round majority decision in Bayamon, Peurto Rico, but Garcia was speaking like he had lost the fight at the post-fight press conference. He stated over and over again that he did his job and won the fight, but there was no conviction in his voice and in the voice of his father Angel Garcia.

They both sounded like it was a loss. Angel got upset when someone mentioned to him that the Showtime analysts had Herrera winning the fight. Angel then angrily said that they’re not judges and they might not have liked Danny anyway, implying that it may have been personal for them to have seen Herrera as the better fighter.

Herrera wants rematch with Danny Garcia

garcia68By Dan Ambrose: After what many people saw as a pure robbery last night in WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia’s controversial 12 round majority decision victory over Mauricio Herrera (20-4, 7 KO’s) at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Herrera is saying that he wants a rematch at 140 lbs if Garcia doesn’t move up in weight to 147. Garcia was hinting after the fight that he may move up in weight due to the problems he had in making weight for the fight. He blamed his poor performance on his problems making weight in part.

“I don’t think Danny Garcia thought I’d come out fighting like that,” Herrera said after the fight. “I want the rematch if he’ll stay at 140. I’m hard to hit. They think I’m easy until they get in the ring with me.”

Danny Garcia: I’ll fight Khan again if Schaefer and Haymon wants that

003 Garcia vs Herrera V IMG_2552(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (28-0, 16 KO’s) said he’s open to facing former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan if his promoter Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions or if his manager Al Haymon wants him to. Garcia defeated Khan by a 4th round TKO two years ago in a big upset.

Instead of thinking about Khan, Garcia should be more focused on erasing the controversy about his 12 round majority decision victory over Mauricio Herrera last night at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, in Puerto Rico. Garcia won the fight, but not too many people believe he deserved to get the decision. The judges scored it 114-114, 116-112, 116-112. However, at best, Garcia looked like he deserved to get a draw out of the fight, and that’s only if you ignored how Herrera clearly got the better of him through the crucial last 6 rounds of the fight.

Danny Garcia out of Mayweather equation

001 Garcia vs Herrera IMG_1729By Steve Davis: Danny Garcia (28-0, 16 KO’s)) got lucky in retaining his super lightweight titles against Mauricio Herrera (20-4, 7 KO’s) in Puerto Rico via majority decision last Saturday night in Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, in Puerto Rico. The judges scored the fight 114-114, and 116-112 twice. This result should put Garcia out of the running for fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September or early next year.

Danny Garcia looked great in out pointing dangerous puncher Lucas Matthysse in his previous fight in September. The Herrera fight was supposed to have been an easy defence and a thank you to the people of Puerto Rico, where his family descend from.

Danny Garcia gifted majority decision over Herrera

garcia777By Rocky Esposito: Typically, I do not get upset with the outcome of a fight. However, forgive me tonight. What a disgrace! What an absolute disgrace. I like WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Swift Garcia, (28-0, 16KO); I know he is only a fighter and not a judge, but he definitely lost this fight tonight to Mauricio Herrera (20-4) at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The judges scored the fight 114-114, 116-112, 116-112.

I am upset with Danny for this reason, how he can say that he won this fight is insane. Look at his face, and look at Herrera’s face. Look at Showtime’s overall stats. He lost this fight on my card, 116-113. And just to prove I am not insane, all of the Showtime commentators had Herrera winning. Angel Garcia, Danny’s father, says that he always speaks the truth. Well, he better admit his son loss. This was not some nail biting close fight. It was a somewhat close fight, but if you know Boxing, just a little, Herrera clearly won.

Garcia beats Herrera by controversial decision; Deontay Wilder annihilates Scott

002 Garcia vs Herrera IMG_2184(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (28-0, 16 KO’s) defeated challenger Mauricio Herrera (20-4, 7 KO’s) by a 12 round majority decision on Saturday night at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The final judges scores were 114-114, 116-112, 116-112.

Herrera seemed to be the smarter fighter, and the one who took most of all of the last 6 rounds. Herrera landed more punches, and was the busier fighter by far. Garcia’s nose was bloodied and his eyes swollen up.

Herrera said “I felt like I won the fight. I know it was close, but I felt like I won the fight.”

Canelo-Angulo replay tonight on Showtime along with Garcia-Herrera

YouTube video
By Dan Ambrose: For fans who didn’t get a chance to see Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) annihilate a terribly over-matched and strangely weak Alfredo Angulo (22-4, 18 KO’s) last Saturday night on Showtime pay-per-view, they can see the fight tonight on regular Showtime if they subscribe to that cable channel. Showtime will be showing the replay of the Canelo-Angulo fight in addition to the Danny Garcia vs. Mauricio Herrera card from the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, in Puerto Rico.

Fans will also get a chance to see ALL ACCESS: Canelo vs. Angulo epilogue tonight, which will go into what took place after the fight.

Garcia vs. Herrera & Wilder vs. Scott will have open scoring

garcia8By Dan Ambrose: Open scoring will be used for tonight’s fights between Deontay Wilder and Malik Scott, and Danny Garcia and Mauricio Herrera, according to Fightnews. The World Boxing Councils rules will be in play, and one of them is open scoring unfortunately. The scores will be read after the 4th and 8th rounds, which will take away any suspense at all in the fights. The only thing good about is it will likely only affect the Garcia-Herrera fight, because Scott will not be around by the end of the 4th round.

The fights will be taking place at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico. This is Garcia’s chance to shine in Peurto Rico, where his parents came from.
