By Jason Kim: In a battle of welterweight prospects, unbeaten Danny Garcia (19-0, 12 KO’s) stopped Jorge Romero (17-3, 15 KO’s) in the 9th round on Friday night at the Moon Palace Resort, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico. Garcia, only 22, hurt Romero with a big left hook to the head in the 9th that sent Romero to the canvas. Romero, 20, made it back to his feet and was met with several powerful rights from Garcia, which prompted the referee to step in and halt the action before Romero could get really hurt.

Miranda cancels fight with Stieglitz; Jacobs picked for prospect of the year – News
By Jason Kim: Super middleweight contender Edison Miranda (33-4, 29 KO’s) had to pull out of his January 9th bout against World Boxing Organization super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz yesterday because the 28-year-old Miranda has been sick with a bad case of the flu. Miranda will need at least 4 to 6 weeks to fully recover from the illness, but still wants to attempt to make the fight with Stieglitz, if possible, at that time. If not, then Miranda will be looking to see if he can land a fight with IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute.

Boxing News: Garcia Decisions Gamboa
By Manuel Perez: Undefeated welterweight prospect Danny Garcia (6-0, 5 KOs) pitched a six-round shut out on Saturday night, beating Nicaraguan fighter Julio Gamboa (28-13-2. 17 KOs) by a lopsided 6-round unanimous decision on the undercard of the Oscar De La Hoya vs. Steve Forbes bout at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California. Garcia, only 20, landed at will with very heavy shots for all six rounds, eventually knocking Gamboa down at the bell with a big right hand. However, Gamboa made it up and the fight ended there as time ran out in the fight. Despite easily winning the fight, the knockout artist Garcia seemed frustrated that he couldn’t stop the strong-chinned Gamboa despite putting everything he had in trying to get Gamboa out of there.
At the start of the fight in the 1st round, Garcia was all over Gamboa, hitting him with huge shots in a lightning fast fashion. Most fighters, perhaps even a champion or two, might have gone down from the heavy shots that Garcia was throwing in the opening round, but not Gamboa, who took the punches without showing any signs of being hurt.
