Arum: Fans want to see Rios-Alvarado 2, not Rios vs. Matthysse

rios54By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum believes that there is a high demand from boxing fans to see two of Arum’s Top Rank stable fighters former WBA World lightweight champion (31-0-1, 23 KO’s) go back and fight Mike Alvarado (33-1, 23 KO’s) again rather than seeing Rios move forward with his career and fight WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (32-2, 30 KO’s).

Arum said to the Boxingsocialist.com “It would be really stupid if I did that fight [Matthysse vs. Rios]. The fight everyone wants to see is Rios and Alvarado. Why would I want to put Rios in with a guy that lost to Zab Judah? He’s [Matthysse] not a draw. The fight is not a draw. Matthysse doesn’t sell 10 tickets.”

Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado II possible for March 16th

rios7By Chris Williams: Bob Arum’s plans to match former WBA World lightweight champion Brandon Rios (31-0-1, 23 KO’s) up against Manny Pacquiao in early April next year were foiled with Pacquiao’s knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez on December 8th.

With no other real ideas what to do with Rios, Arum is reportedly looking to put him back in the ring with light welterweight contender Mike Alvarado (33-1, 23 KO’s) for a rematch on March 16th.

Rios already beat Alvarado by a 7th round knockout last October in a fight that was competitive until Alvarado got hurt in the 6th and then taken out in the 7th.

Rios vs. Alvarado 2 possible for April

Image: Rios vs. Alvarado 2 possible for AprilBy Dan Ambrose: Brandon Rios (31-0-1, 23 KO’s) may have seen his chance at a big money fight against Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO’s) go up in smoke last Saturday night with Pacquiao’s 6th round knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez (55-6-1, 40 KO’s), as Top Rank promoter Bob Arum wanted to match Rios up against Pacquiao if he had beaten Marquez but that didn’t happen.

It now looks like Arum is considering a rematch between Rios and Mike Alvarado (33-1, 23 KO’s). Rios beat Alvarado by a 7th round knockout victory last October in an exciting WBO light welterweight title eliminator bout, and I think Arum wants to make that fight again in the absence of a Pacquiao-Rios bout.

Pacquiao to fight next on April 20th, Rios still a possibility if not Marquez

Image: Pacquiao to fight next on April 20th, Rios still a possibility if not MarquezBy Allan Fox: The recently defeated Manny Pacquiao will reportedly be back in the ring on April 20th with his already scheduled fight date. That’s a quick turnaround date for a fighter that was knocked out as viciously as Pacquiao was by Juan Manuel Marquez in his 6th round knockout loss. That’s only four months in between fights. Pacquiao’s head won’t have much time to rest from the KO loss, and he might get knocked out even quicker if Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum sticks with the April date.

There’s no word yet whether Marquez will accept a 5th fight with him, as there’s talk that Marquez is considering retirement. Brandon Rios was supposed to be fighting the winner of the Paquiao-Marquez 4 fight, but in this case he could be facing the loser in Pacquiao. This would still be an interesting fight even with Pacquiao having been knocked out by Marquez last Saturday. Rios has good power, an exciting style of fighting, and he’s one of those guys that only fights in one direction – forward. Rios isn’t a counter puncher like Marquez, so Pacquiao wouldn’t have to worry about that from him.

Rios: Matthysse would be a harder fight than Danny Garcia

By Dan Ambrose: Once Brandon Rios faces Manny Pacquiao next April in their pay per view bout, Rios says he wouldn’t mind taking on WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia or WBA interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse. Rios thinks Matthysse would be the much harder fight, however, as he sees him as having good power. Rios doesn’t rate Garcia as a big puncher for some reason.

Rios: Arum already told me I’m getting Pacquiao-Marquez winner

YouTube video
By Chris Williams: Former WBA World lightweight champion Brandon Rios came out in an interview with Radio Raheem and said he’s already been told by his promoter Bob Arum that he will indeed be fighting the winner of this Saturday night’s fight between Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao.

Here’s some of what Rios said in the interview with Radio Raheem:

Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios targeted for April 20th

Image: Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios targeted for April 20thBy Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao is already being steered for a fight against unbeaten former WBA World lightweight champion Brandon Rios (31-0-1, 23 KO’s) on April 20th next year. Bob Arum, Pacquiao and Rios’ promoter, wants that fight next after Pacquiao’s fight against Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday and that’s what boxing will be seeing.

Of course, a loss for Pacquiao on Saturday could change Arum’s plans of a Pacquiao-Rios fight, because Pacquiao would almost have to fight Marquez for a 5th time because this wouldn’t be a loss where we’d see Pacquiao not face Marquez again for three years like we saw after Pacquiao beat Marquez by a questionable 12 round decision in 2008.

Broner interested in fighting Brandon Rios

Image: Broner interested in fighting Brandon RiosBy Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) is intrigued with the idea of fighting former WBA World lightweight champion Brandon Rios (31-0-1, 23 KO’s) in the future if the fight can be made.

Speaking with esnewsreporting.com, a smiling Broner said “Rios and me are going to have a lot of fun.”

Before that fight can get made, Broner will have to first defeat one or two of the top lightweights so that he can establish that he’s the best fighter at that weight before moving up to light welterweight to look to get a bout with Rios.

Bradley not interested in Mike Alvarado bout, wants Rios

Image: Bradley not interested in Mike Alvarado bout, wants RiosBy Chris Williams: In a boxing club type move, WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley (29-0, 12 KO’s) is reportedly being offered the recently beaten light welterweight Mike Alvarado (33-1, 23 KO’s) for his next fight in 2013, according to Examiner.com. However, Bradley has no interest in fighting a guy that is coming off of a 7th round TKO defeat to Brandon Rios (31-0-1, 23 KO’s) last October, and instead he wants Rios. Alvarado, Rios and Bradley all fight for Top Rank promotions.

You can’t blame Bradley for not being pleased at the thought of fighting Alvarado, a guy that just lost instead of Rios. There’s no gain in fighting Alvarado, and I don’t know of too many boxing fans that would want to see Alvarado fighting for a world title off of a knockout loss. How do you do that? That’s not a good product for fans of the sport to be seeing a guy like Alvarado get a world title fight off of a defeat.

Pacquiao vs. Rios anybody?!

Image: Pacquiao vs. Rios anybody?!By Denzel: A bout between Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios SHOULD be made early next year. I can already hear the Floyd Mayweather fans laughing about this, taking swipes at Pacquiao for not fighting ‘Pretty Boy.’ But let’s be honest, after almost three years of attempted negotiations we are no closer to this dream fight. I think it is safe to say this fight is not going to happen, and even if it does it will not hold the historical significance it would of a few years ago. Now once everybody comes to terms with this I think fans interest will turn to more realistic fights that COULD be made.

I will make no bones about it, I think Pacquiao vs. Rios  would be one hell of a fight. Is Pacquiao past it to the point were a young, hungry lion like Rios could take the W?? Has Rios got it in him to weather the Pacquiao storm, take his shots and keep coming forward?
