Can Mike Alvarado Avenge his Loss to Brandon Rios?

alvarado2By Ryan Wardle: A rematch of one of last year’s most scintillating fights is rumored to be in the works. Mike Alvarado (33-1, 23 KO’s) vs. Brandon Rios (31-0-1, 23 KO’s) II is allegedly set for a tentative date of March 30th. Brandon Rios earned a seventh round stoppage, last October, in a fight that was filled with excitement from start to finish, and the proposed rematch is expected to have no less action than the first.

In the first bout both fighters went toe to toe for the better part of seven rounds. Rios was eventually able to connect with a hard right hand that staggered Alvarado, Rios then followed it up with a combination of punches while Alvarado was on the ropes. Referee Pat Russell then stepped in and put a stop to the bout with Alvarado still on his feet. At the time of the stoppage two of the three judges had the bout scored even 57-57, with one judge having the bout scored 58-56 in favor of Rios.

Robert Garcia: We would like Marquez for Brandon Rios

marquez4534By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Robert Garcia says he’s hoping that Brandon Rios can fight Juan Manuel Marquez after Rios’s March 30th rematch with Mike Alvarado. However, Robert is wisest enough to see that as impossible due to Marquez facing Manny Pacquiao in a huge money rematch in September

Robert said to RingTV “We [Rios] would like a fight with Marquez, but we know he’s got a rematch with Manny Pacquiao in September and he’s a businessman.”

Rios should be trying to fight Richard Abril again instead of Marquez because too many boxing fans saw Rios’ controversial decision over Abril and they mostly saw him losing badly. Rios shouldn’t have walked away from that fight without facing Abril again, because it looks bad that Rios moved on without clearing up the controversy. .

Alvarado signs for Rios rematch

alvarado23By Dan Ambrose: Light welterweight contender Mike Alvarado (33-1, 23 KO’s) has signed a contract for a rematch with unbeaten former WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios (31-0-1, 23 KO’s) for a fight that will be taking place on March 30th, according to Steve Kim. Team Alvarado are now waiting for Rios to sign his portion of the contract.

Rios stopped the 32-year-old Alvarado in the 7th round last October in a fight that was competitive until the 6th round. Once Rios got Alvarado hurt, he finished him off. The fight was exciting while it lasted, which gave their mutual promoter Bob Arum the excuse to put them back in the ring together.

Arum probably didn’t need much of an excuse to put them back in together given that Arum doesn’t have a lot of options to put either guy in with. By putting them together, Arum can keep them both busy and presumably happy.

Arum: Fans want to see Rios-Alvarado 2; they’ll fight on March 30th

rios0213By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has made up his mind that boxing fans are demanding to see his fighter former WBA World lightweight champion Brandon Rios (31-0-1, 23 KO’s) fight Mike Alvarado (33-1, 23 KO’s) again, and Arum is going to give the fans what he feels they want by putting them together again for a rematch on March 30th instead of looking to match them against other opponents.

Arum said to RingTV “We’re looking at March 30 at the Mandalay Bay. It will be him squaring off against Mike Alvarado for a rematch. That’s a fight the fans want to see.”

I got an idea. How about Arum not put that tired rematch together and instead put Rios back in with the guy that beat him soundly, Richard Abril. That’s a fight that boxing fans would prefer to see rather than watching Rios beat up a guy he just knocked out in Alvarado.

Brandon Rios wants Danny Garcia or Matthysse after Alvarado rematch in March

rios343By Chris Williams: Top Rank fighter Brandon Rios (31-0-1, 25 KO’s) looks to be heading for an unnecessary rematch against Mike Alvarado in late March. It’s a strange fight that Bob Arum has put together because there’s no real point in this rematch taking place because Rios destroyed Alvarado last October in a 7th round knockout victory, but Arum thinks boxing fans want to see the fight again so he’s going to shove it down their throats instead of putting Rios in with some new blood.

Rios says wants to fight WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia or interim WBC light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse this year.

Rios said to Jenna Jay at doghouseboxing.com “My goal is to fight Danny Garcia for the WBC title belt, because that’s the belt I want. I would love to fight Lucas Matthysse.”

Pacquiao’s April fight possible for Manila; Humberto Soto and Brandon Rios are options

soto21421By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao could be fighting in the Philippines in Manila on April 13th, according to the Manilastandardtoday.com. The names of the options are different from the ones that were floated earlier today. Having the fight in Manila would save Pacquiao on taxes. The guys that Pacquiao could fight are former WBC lightweight champion Humberto Soto (59-8-2, 34 KO’s) or former WBA World lightweight champion Brandon Rios (31-0-1, 23 KO’s).

For obvious reasons, Rios would be the guy that Bob Arum would likely be interested in seeing Pacquiao fight because he’s one of Arum’s Top Rank stable fighters and he was the one that Arum wanted to see Pacquiao fighting in April before Pacquiao shockingly was stopped in the 6th round by Juan Manuel Marquez last month on December 8th.

Pacquiao’s April 20th tune-up fight won’t be in Las Vegas; Rios or Bradley possibilities

pc9By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao won’t be fighting his April 20th tune-up fight in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to the Manilatimes.net. Rex Salud, a business adviser of Pacquiao, says his medical suspension won’t be over until the third week of April, which would make it impossible for Pacquiao to fight on April 20th. So instead of the fight taking place in Las Vegas, Salud believes Pacquiao could end up fighting in “Macua, Abu Dhabu or Singapore.”

I imagine Arum would love it if the fight card took place in one of those countries because the taxes would likely be quite low compared to if the fight took place in the United States. I’m not so sure the gate would be as good, though, but the low taxes would make it tempting for Arum.

Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado 2 possible for March 30th

rios342By Eric Thomas: Former WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios (31-0-1, 23 KO’s) and Mike Alvarado (33-1, 23 KO’s) are in play for a rematch on March 30th, according to a Rios interview at diamondboxing.com. Rios would much prefer to get a big money fight against Manny Pacquiao instead.

However, it’s looking like his promoter Bob Arum will choose to put Pacquiao back in with Juan Manuel Marquez due to the high interest in the fight. But if Pacquiao doesn’t face Marquez next, Rios will likely be the guy that gets the fight rather than a fighter outside of Top Rank. When and if that opportunity comes, Rios is more than ready to take it. He wants the Pacquiao badly and he’ll take it any way he can get it.

Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado 2 likely for March

alvarado23By Dan Ambrose: The rematch between former WBA World lightweight champion Brandon Rios (31-0-1, 23 KO’s) and the guy he just finished knocking out Mike Alvarado (33-1, 23 KO’s) is heading towards March next year, according to Dan Rafael. Rios knocked Alvarado out in the 7th round last October in an exciting and competitive fight on HBO from Carson, California.

Rios was supposed to move forward with his career and face Manny Pacquiao next, at least that was the plan that Rios’ promoter Bob Arum had hoped would take place. But Juan Manuel Marquez ruined those big plans by knocking Pacquiao out in the 6th round on December 8th of this month, and Arum decided to put Pacquiao and Marquez back in together in a rematch next year after Pacquiao has had a long rest to recover from his brutal knockout loss.

The Worst decisions in 2012: Abril-Rios, Adamek-Chambers, Adamek-Cunningham

rios434By Dan Ambrose: I must say that heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek (48-2, 29 KO’s) has been quite lucky in 2012 with his very controversial decision wins over Eddie Chambers and Steve Cunningham. Those two fights along with former WBA World lightweight champion Brandon Rios’s win over Richard Abril has got to the worst decisions in 2012 among well-known fighters.

Rios (31-0-1, 23 KO’s) was given a split decision over Abril on April 14th of this year at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight, seen by thousands of people, was completely dominated by Abril for the entire 12 rounds of the fight. Rios fought well enough to deserve maybe two rounds at the most, as he was getting with clean pinpoint shots from the Cuban Abril throughout the fight and was like watching Floyd Mayweather Jr. pick apart a limited Ricky Hatton.
