Rigondeaux neutralizes Donaire
By Esteban Lopez: Last night we saw another great night for boxing that ended in upsetting fashion with WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo the “The Jackal” Rigondeaux defeated WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito the “The Filipino Flash” Donaire by a 12 round unanimous decision at the Radio City Music Hall in New York, New York.
Rigondeaux executed his game plan perfectly and is now with out a doubt in a different class. He moved so effortlessly around Donaire that it was difficult to watch how Donaire trotted around the ring. Rigondeaux patiently waited for the openings and tagged Donaire again and again throughout the fight, and got out of range before being countered like a well trained and disciplined guerrilla soldier.
Braekhus destroys St. John in 3rd round TKO
By Jim Dower: In a fight that should never have been made in the first place, WBA/WBO/WBC female welterweight Cecilia Braekhus (22-0, 6 KO’s) stopped a badly over-matched Mia St John (47-13-2, 18 KO’s) in the 3rd round on Saturday night at the Arena Nord, Frederikshavn, Denmark. Braekhus, 31, hurt the 45-year-old St. John with a hard right uppercut in the third round that had St. John out on her feet.
Atlas: Zou Shiming is going to need to be carefully matched to succeed
By Chris Williams: ESPN analyst Teddy Atlas believes that Top Rank fighter flyweight Zou Shiming (1-0) is going to need to be carefully matched for him to succeed in the pro game after watching his less than impressive performance against the light hitting inexperienced 18-year-old Eleazar Valenzuela (2-2-2, 1 KO’s) last Saturday night in a fight that was televised by HBO from Macao, China.
Atlas doesn’t say specifically why the 32-year-old Shiming needs to be carefully matched but one can guess that Atlas doesn’t see the talent there for Shiming to succeed at the highest rungs of the pro game unless he’s maneuvered around dangerous guys.
Mamadjonov stops Santana
By Jim Dower: In something of a surprise, lightweight Bahodir Mamadjonov (13-1, 9 KO’s) defeated #3 WBA, Angelo Santana (14-1, 11 KO’s) by a 9th round TKO on Friday night to capture the vacant WBA International lightweight title at the Treasure Island Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
he fight was one-sided from the start as southpaw Mamadjonov was able to tag Santana with left hands at will in every round and pepper him with jabs. The fact that Santana was the highly ranked fighter and not Mamadjonov seemed like a mix up on the sanctioning bodies part because Mamadjonov was by far the better fighter of the two.
Bika vs. Periban to battle for Andre Ward’s vacant WBC 168 lb. title on June 8th
By Allan Fox: The World Boxing Council stripped Andre Ward of his WBC super middleweight title on Thursday because he was still injured and hadn’t defended it since last September when he beat Chad Dawson.
The WBC instead will have Ward’s vacant WBC 168 lb. title on the line on June 8th when #1 WBC, Sakio Bika (31-5-2, KO’s) faces #4 WBC, Marco Antonio Periban (20-0, 13 KO’s) at the Home Depot Center, Carson, California, USA, according to Dan Rafael.
This move doesn’t really make a lot of sense because Floyd Mayweather Jr, the WBC welterweight champion, hasn’t defended his WBC title since capturing it in September of 2011 with a 4th round stoppage win over Victor Ortiz.

by Hector Sanchez: At the “Fights at the Fairgrounds” in the heart of Texas, that is, Dallas, Texas, up and coming super middleweight Tony Mack (6-0, 3KO’s) from Dallas, Texas puts another win on his undefeated record. This time he added it with a knockout of Curtis Howell (3-3, 2KO’s) on Saturday night at the Coliseum at the historic Dallas Fair Park, and capturing the Texas Super Middleweight Title.
The Kimbo Slice Illusion
By James Sexton: Kimbo Slice aka Kevin Ferguson the street fighter and mixed martial artist turned boxer, is 7-0 with 6 knockouts to his name. Thankfully, nobody has bought into this yet. I have not spoken to anyone who has told me that Kimbo Slice is going to be the next big thing in boxing, and with good reason.
In 7 contests he has not fought anyone but tomato cans which he can beat up on. He has looked sluggish and has a low work rate in the ring, with incredibly painful slow hand and foot speed. Often when fights get into the third round Ferguson is visibly fatigued and ceases to throw meaningful punches or gets tagged himself with head shots.
Honestly, I do respect him for what he has done in his time, however the Kimbo Slice that took place in the bare-knuckle street fight videos is a different man to the one who steps into the boxing ring today, and this version of Kimbo has no place fighting.
