Canelo decisions Trout in robbery of the century in Texas

001 Canelo vs Trout IMG_3808(Photo credit: Tom Casino/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: In a clear robbery, WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) defeated WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-1, 14 KO’s) by a very controversial 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas, USA. The final judges scores were 115-112, 116-111 and 118-109. The last scores were an absolute crime. I had Trout winning the fight 10 rounds to 2.

Canelo knocked Trout down in the 7th round with a right hand at the start of the round. However, Trout came back to dominate the remainder of the round and the rest of the fight. Trout appeared to sweep rounds eight through twelve to easily win the fight, but of course the fight was held in Texas, so it’s not surprising that Canelo got the win.

39,247 fans in attendance for Canelo-Trout tonight

002 Alvarez IMG_0108(Photo Credit: Stephanie Trapp / SHOWTIME) By Allan Fox: 39,247 boxing fans are in attendance to tonight’s unification bout between WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) and WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The arena can hold 70,000 but it was retrofitted to fit 40,000 fans.

The winner of tonight’s fight could end up facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September depending on what happens in Mayweather’s fight next month against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. There’s going to be a tremendous amount of pressure on the winner of the Mayweather-Guerrero fight to face the Canelo-Trout winner because it’s the logical next fight.

Trout’s team unhappy with the sponginess of the ring during pre-fight inspection

004 Alvarez and Trout IMG_1805(Photo Credit: Stephanie Trapp / SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: The team of WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout were reportedly unhappy with the sponginess of the ring mat during the pre-fight inspection for his fight against WBC junior middleweight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez tonight at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. According to LA Times writer Lance Pugmore, they said the canvas was “like running in quicksand.”

Making the canvas spongy is an old trick that the home teams use to slow down a visiting a fighter that moves a lot in order to make him slower so that the flat-footed fighter can catch up to him. So is this was Canelo’s team have done for this fight against Trout? Who knows? But it is clear that Trout is the fighter that depends on movement to win his fights and he IS the visiting fighter for this bout, and Canelo IS the slower, flat-footed fighter that needs the action to be slow in order for him to win the fight.

Fury was behind on the scorecards at the time of his stoppage of Cunningham

fury1By Scott Gilfoid: Boxing fans will be interested to know that unbeaten heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) was behind on two of the judges’ scorecards tonight in tied on the third at the time he halted the smaller Steve Cunningham (25-6, 12 KO’s) in the 7th round at Madison Square Garden in New York. Two judges had Cunningham up 57-55, while the third had it 56-56.

Fury didn’t prove that he’s a better fighter tonight than Cunningham. The only thing he proved was that he’s the bigger fighter. Fury was knocked down in the 2nd and getting the worst of it until he was able to use his huge 44 pound weight advantage to manhandle Cunningham from the 5th round on. Fury really roughed Cunningham up from the 5th round, and even lost a point in the 5th for head-butting him.

Canelo’s trainer predicts KO win over Trout tonight

Canelo_Trout Faceoff_StephanieTrapp_KR6A3205(Photo Credit: Stephanie Trapp / SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: Jose “Chepo” Reynoso, the trainer for WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) is predicting a knockout win for his fighter tonight at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas in his fight with WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s).

Reynoso told ESPN “We’re going to win by knockout. We’re very confident.”

Having seen how slow Canelo’s fighting style is in his past fights, it’s hard to imagine him stepping it up in a high enough gear to get a stoppage win over an actual junior middleweight like Trout.

Canelo couldn’t knock Shane Mosley, Matthew Hatton and Lovemore Ndou, and he barely stopped Ryan Rhodes in the 12th round. Canelo was struggling against Alfonso Gomez and seemed stuck in first gear. Canelo doesn’t see capable of putting out a lot energy needed to score a stoppage because he’s too busy conserving energy for some reason.

I can understand why he fights at a slow pace because just looking at how heavily he breaths in between rounds and how red his face gets when he exerts himself, it seems pretty obvious that he doesn’t possess the cardiovascular system to go all out round after round to score a stoppage over a fighter like Trout.

Tyson Fury shows he has the heart of a champion in beating Cunningham

fury2By Mark Calooke: Tonight, unbeaten Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) vs. Steve Cunningham (25-6, 12 KO’s) was heavyweight boxing at its best. Toe to toe big, big punches, knock downs, knock outs and grit.

Steve Cunningham has had 8 world title fights and never been stopped. He certainly was Tyson Fury’s biggest test to date. But Tyson Fury was to good for the veteran.

Although Fury was the better boxer. Cunningham did have moments of brilliance. A big right hook in the second round saw big Tyson Fury sink to the canvas. it was a tremendous shot and the kind that could smash down walls. Cunningham, the underdog, looked like he had been given the pot of gold. But Fury got back up and recovered quickly.

Nathan Cleverly treats Robin Krasniqi like a sparring partner

cleverly4By Mark Calooke: Robin Krasniqi (39-3, 15 KO’s) seemed confident in the build up. As the number #1 WBO contender he saw WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly’s (26-0, 12 KO’s) title ripe for picking pm Saturday night at the Wembley Arena, in Wembley, London, United Kingdom. Cleverly defeated Krasniqi by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 119-109, 120-108, 120-108. How wrong could he have been. The fans didn’t seem to mind watching their man dominate.

Krasniqi stuck in there until the very end, but only because Cleverly stopped looking for the knock out. In fact he seemed bored. It would have been nice to see him keep concentration because he ended up taking more punches than he needed to.

Cleverly decisions Krasniqi; Walsh defeats Harrison; Chisora stops Avila

krasniqi22By Scott Gilfoid: WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (26-0, 12 KO’s) retained his title tonight with a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision win over his #1 WBO challenger Robin Krasniqi (39-3, 15 KO’s) at the Wembley Arena, in Wembley, London, United Kingdom. The final judges’ scores 120-108, 119-109, and 120-108.

I don’t agree with the scores because I had Krasniqi winning from two to three rounds of the fight. He was teeing off on Cleverly in the 6th and 7th rounds, and there’s no way you can give Cleverly every round when you look at what Krasniqi was doing to him in those rounds.

Fury stops Cunningham; Hughie stops Rozman

fury3by Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) had to get up off the deck to stop the much, much smaller 210 lb. Steve Cunningham (25-6, 12 KO’s) in the 7th round on Saturday night at the Madison Square Garden, New York.

The end came when Fury trapped Cunningham against the ropes and shoved him hard when he attempted to escape. Fury then nailed Cunningham with a short right uppercut followed by a nice right hook that put Cunningham down on the canvas for the 10 round.

In the 2nd round, Cunningham dropped Fury with a peach of a right hand to the head that put Fury down on his backside. Unfortunately for Cunningham, he wasn’t able to finish Fury off because he was too tired to throw more than a handful of punches. Had it been a normal sized heavyweight with better stamina than the heavily muscled Cunningham, Fury likely would have been stopped in that round.

Will a win over Trout make Saul Alvarez a pound 4 pound star?

FACEOFF_KR6A2118(Photo Credit: Stephanie Trapp / SHOWTIME) By Paul Havey: For so long the best have avoided the best. Prospects have taken the easiest possible route to a title. Champions sign to face opponents that pose very little threat to them. it’s not been a scenario that attracts new fans. but tonight that all changes.

So why is Alvarez vs Trout any different to all the other fights? Risk and competition. It’s not a case of one having a huge talent over the other. No fight is truly 50/50, but this is as close as it gets. It’s a genuine competition. Both fighters are risking a lot. Many champions fight boxers that won’t win. They know it and so do the fans. Both are at the top of their game and a defeat could be handed to either one. This is the kind of fight that will bring new fans to boxing. and if you aren’t excited, you should be.

Trout is coming off a win against Miguel Cotto. We all expected this fight to be Cotto vs Alvarez. Trout threw a spanner in the works and out classed the man ranked 3rd in the ppv rankings. Trout will have confidence right now. he is the more tactical boxer that will have a clear game plan.
