Gennady Golovkin: Three potential opponents for next fight

1-Golovkin_Wade_AY1J4785By Tom Hochbaum: Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin just fought last weekend, but it wasn’t enough. Triple G did was Triple G does: Brutally knockout a highly ranked Middleweight. This time, it was Dominic Wade. The previously undefeated Wade was coming off of an unimpressive decision victory over Sam Soliman.

While Soliman does have a very awkward style that can make it difficult to look sharp against, the fact the Soliman was the biggest test on Wade’s resume should have been an indication that Wade probably was not ready for GGG. However, with #1 ranked challenger Tureano Johnson suffering an injury, the IBF chose to promote Wade to Golovkin’s mandatory.

Rule Britannia? Part 1

anthny josuhua (10)By Adam Godfrey: It is easy to wax lyrical about British Boxing and its place in the world scene. Of the recognized World Championship belts, from Minimumweight to Heavyweight (but not including Interim Champions, Champions in Recess or ‘Regular’ champions where there is already a ‘Superchampion’, of which Britain only has one, Jamie McDonnell, who is WBA ‘Regular’ Bantamweight Champion), thirteen are held by a fighter who hails from England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Americans hold seven; Mexicans hold eleven, Puerto Ricans hold four, another four belong to Filipinos and Cubans hold two. Therefore, of the main Boxing nations, Britain tops the World Championship table by two over second placed Mexico. However, there are myriad factors involved in determining how healthy a nation’s Boxing scene is, with the number of World Champions it boasts being only one of them.

For example, Mexico, while having fewer world champions representing it, currently counts the biggest PPV draw in the World amongst its ranks, in Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. Having just one fighter as popular as Canelo could arguably be considered as much of an advantage as having seven or eight lesser-known World Champions if it brings Boxing to the attention of a greater mass of people.

Saunders to face Golovkin or Eubank Jr. in HUGE summer fight

saunders5By Scott Gilfoid: WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) has revealed that he has plans on a big summer fight against either Chris Eubank Jr. (22-1, 17 KOs) or Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs). Saunders, 26, isn’t saying which of the two he’ll be facing in the summer.

Either way, he could have a tough time beating either of them. The fight against Golovkin will likely only happen if the unbeaten IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion agrees to fight Saunders in the UK, which might not happen. Golovkin and his promoter Tom Loeffler will likely choose to stay out of the ring until they find out if they’ll be getting the unification fight against WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in September.

Saunders still insisting Golovkin fight him in UK

saunders533By Dan Ambrose: WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders says he’s not going to be fighting IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in the United States because he doesn’t trust the judging over there. Saunders doesn’t think he’ll get the win if the fight is close. Saunders feels that even if he beats Golovkin by two rounds, the judges won’t give him the victory.

Saunders does think he’s got the boxing skills to out-box the hard hitting Golovkin if the fight does every take place, but it’ll have to be in the UK. Saunders is willing to take less money to fight Golovkin in the UK, because he’s confident that he’ll be able to beat him.

Billy Joe Saunders suffers hand injury, pulls out of Bursak fight

saunders5533By Patrick McHugh: WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) has suffered a hand injury in training for his April 30 title defense against #11 WBO Max Bursak at the Copper Box Arena in London, England.

The injury to Saunders’ left hand was serious enough for the 26-year-old to pull out of the Bursak fight entirely. Saunders suffered the hand injury training, and he’s said to be quite unhappy about it. This was considered a very winnable fight for Saunders, but by no means a wealk in the park for him. Bursak would have been a tough out, and Saunders would have needed to be at his best to get the victory.

With Bursak now out of the way, Saunders is in a good position to fight the winner of the April 23 fight between IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin and Dominic Wade. That fight will be taking place in the States at the Forum in Inglewood, California. Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions very much would like to match Golovkin against Saunders if they can’t get a shot against WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in September, which would seem to be the case.

Loeffler: Gilberto Ramirez is Golovkin’s best option if no Canelo

ramirez95By Dan Ambrose: According to IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler, unbeaten WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (34-0, 24 KOs) is Golovkin’s best option for later this year if they can’t get WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders inside the ring for a unification fight.

Ramirez defeated WBO champion Arthur Abraham last Saturday night in outclassing him by winning a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ramirez vs. Abraham was televised on HBO PPV on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Tim Bradley 3 card.

Saunders: I was offered $1.5M for Golovkin fight, not $4m

saunders66By Jeff Aranow: WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) says was never offered the reported $4 million to fight IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) for a proposed fight.

Saunders says instead of it being $4 million, it was only $1.5 million. This is why he chose not to take the fight. Saunders says that if he was offered $4m, he would have agreed to it rather than electing to fight Max Bursak (32-4-1, 15 KOs), who he’ll be facing on April 30 at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK.

By Scott Gilfoid: WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) says he wants to fight a unification match against IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) in a fight that would take place in July on the undercard of the Tyson Fury vs. Wladimir Klitschko undercard.

Daniel Jacobs: I want Billy Joe Saunders

1-Jacobs-Hardy-Foreman_MediaWorkout-18By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (31-1, 28 KOs) wants to take the scalp of WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) in his next fight.

Jacobs, 29, called Saunders out in social media, and Saunders responded back, saying that he’ll kick Jacobs’ backside. However, it looks like Saunders is just flapping his gums with no real serious interest in fighting the dangerous KO artist Jacobs, because Saunders has a fight scheduled on April 30 against #11 WBO fringe contender Max Bursak (32 4 1, 15 KOs) at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK.
