Billy Joe Saunders to fight on September 17

saunders5533

By Scott Gilfoid: WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) revealed on Friday that he’ll be fighting on September 17. Saunders, 26, didn’t say who he’ll be fighting or what fight card, but it’s obvious that he’ll be fighting on the undercard of the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Liam Smith card on HBO pay-per-view in the States.

There’s talk that if Canelo whips Smith, he’ll then move up to middleweight to challenge Saunders for his WBO title at a catch-weight of some sorts. Having Saunders fight on Canelo’s undercard on September 17 will give ant U.S boxing fans a chance to see the British fighter before he faces Canelo later this year in December.

Of course, none of this is official, but that’s what the talk is right now. The fact that Canelo’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions is interested in having the middleweight champion Saunders fight on Canelo’s undercard on September 17 would be the perfect setup for Canelo to challenge him for his WBO strap in December.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Billy Joe Saunders in play for December

By Dan Ambrose: If Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) dethrones WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs) in their fight on September 17, Canelo’s next move is a fight against WBC middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) in December on HBO.

For Saunders to get the payday fight against Canelo, he might need to agree to a catch-weight of 157lbs otherwise no fight. There’s talk that Golden Boy Promotions, the promoters for the 25-year-old Canelo, wants Saunders to fight on the undercard of the Canelo-Smith fight on September 17 so that the U.S boxing public gets a chance to see him, and thus will likely be more likely to be receptive to a second consecutive fight against a British fighter.

BJ Saunders possible for Canelo vs. Smith undercard

saunders97

By Scott Gilfoid: Golden Boy Promotions are reportedly interested in getting WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) to fight on September 17 on the undercard of their fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s title match against unbeaten WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs).

The idea would be for the 26-year-old Saunders to get some visibility by fighting on the Canelo-Smith undercard on HBO PPV, so that the U.S fans get a chance to see him fight before Canelo faces him in the near future for his WBO 160lb title. Liam Smith and BJ Saunders are both promoted by Frank Warren.

Jacobs wants Saunders, then Golovkin

jacobs555

By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World middleweight champion Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs (31-1, 28 KOs) says he wants to fight a unification match against WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) this year, and after he beats him, he wants to face IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Goovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) for all the marbles next year in the fall of 2017 in a pay-per-view fight. But first, Jacobs wants to take Saunders’ scalp and get some momentum by adding his WBO strap to his collection before looking to face the main man in the division in GGG.

Getting Saunders inside the ring may prove to be difficult for Jacobs, however, as Saunders has been sitting on his WBO title without defending it for the past seven months since winning it with a narrow 12 round decision victory over former champion Andy Lee last December.

Warren talks Golovkin – Eubank Jr. match

eubank100

By Jeff Aranow: Frank Warren, the promoter for WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders, says he offered the highly ranked #2 WBA, #2 WBC Chris Eubank Jr. (22-1, 17 KOs) a fight against Saunders, but he never heard back from him again. Warren doesn’t understand how Eubank Sr. and Eubank Jr. could walk away from the Saunders fight, and then turn around and fight Tom Doran (17-0, 7 KOs) next on June 25.

Warren further doesn’t understand how or why Eubank Jr. is calling out Golovkin, because he sees that as a fight that has zero chance of happening. However, if it does happen, Warren sees Eubank Jr. getting knocked out by Golovkin.

Warren thinks Golovkin would definitely KO Eubank Jr. if that fight eventually happens. Eubank Jr’s promoter Eddie Hearn says he’s looking to put the fight together between Eubank Jr. and Golovkin for later this year.

Saunders in consideration for Canelo’s September fight

saunders43

By Scott Gilfoid: The talented IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) and his team at K2 Promotions have made it plainly clear that they want a unification match against WBO middleweight belt holder Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) this year IF they can’t get a big money fight against former two division champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) next in September.

Golovkin wants the last middleweight title belt not in possession. For him to get the title, he’ll need to face Saunders, who seems to be quite willing to face him. However, Canelo’s promoter Eric Gomez of Golden Boy Promotions threw a potential monkey wrench into Triple G’s plans on Monday by saying that Saunders is one of the candidates for Canelo’s next fight.

Gomez isn’t saying that Saunders is the leading candidate, as there are six others besides him. Saunders is clearly someone that Canelo and Golden Boy see as good option for them, because it would give the Mexican star a chance to win an easy world title against the light hitting Saunders.

Saunders: McGregor should fight me, then Mayweather

saunders97

By Scott Gilfoid: WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) says he’s not in favor of Floyd Mayweather Jr. fighting UFC champion Conor McGregor in a boxing match. Saunders thinks it’s bad for the sport, and a fight in which McGregor could potentially get hurt by Mayweather due to his inexperience in boxing.

Saunders’s idea is for McGregor to earn the fight against Mayweather by facing him first, and if McGregor wins, then he can move forward to face Mayweather for a big money fight. It sounds like a nice pipe dream, doesn’t it? The problem with that idea is that McGregor will likely never consider it even for a fraction of a second. I mean, there’s no question in my mind that Saunders would whip the novice McGregor in a boxing match. But once Saunders finished smashng McGregor into oblivion, Mayweather couldn’t fight McGregor any longer. Who would want to see a Mayweather-McGregor fight then? Saunders will spoiled the mismatch for Mayweather by beating his unskilled opponent before he could do it.

Golovkin’s Plan B is Saunders if no Canelo

saunders5533

By Jeff Aranow: WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders is the Plan-B opponent for IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin if his negotiations with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fails to produce a fight for September 17. Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler has hopes that a fight can be made with Canelo, but if not, then the 26-year-old Saunders is the guy that want next.

The World Boxing Association will let Golokvin take the unification fight against Saunders or the Canelo fight, but after that, Golovkin will need to fight WBA World middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs at the end of the year. The WBA is looking to reduce the amount of champions they have in each division.

So a fight between WBA Super World middleweight champion Golovkin and Saunders is how the WBA will accomplish that. The WBA will let both Golovkin and Jacobs one more fight before ordering them to face each other.

Saunders: I’ll fight Golovkin

saunders97By Scott Gilfoid: WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) says he’ll gladly give IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) the fight he wants if he’s paid rightly, and if he has a say so on the venue for the fight. Saunders, 26, says he would even come to the United States to fight Golovkin if he’s paid well enough.

Saunders says he was contacted by Golovkin’s management after he won the WBO title last December in beating champion Andy Lee. However, Saunders says all he was offered for the Golovkin fight was $1 million to 1.5 million. Saunders didn’t see that as a lot of money for a unification fight against a popular fighter like Golovkin.

Golovkin vs. Saunders a possibility for GGG’s next fight?

1-golovkin (1)By Patrick McHugh: WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) remains an option for IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) if he can’t get the opponent he’s looking for in WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for this year.

Saunders’ promoter Frnk Warren acknowledges that Saunders wants that fight and they’re going to wait and see what happens with Canelo after his May 7 fight against Amir Khan. It’s generally understood that Canelo will likely beat Khan and then his promoters at Golden Boy will make a decision shortly after that whether to take the Golovkin fight.
