Anthony Joshua says he’ll expose Charles Martin

joshua6By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten British heavyweight Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs) has 18 days to go before he steps inside the ring against undefeated IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin (23-0-1, 21 KOs) on April 9 on Sky Box Office at the O2 Arena in London, England.

Joshua thinks the 6’5” Martin is a cool customer the way he doesn’t stress out in the heat of battle. Martin keeps it together mentally and picks up opponents apart with his powerful left hand shots to the head. Martin’s southpaw style and his huge size gives his opponents big time problems, and he expects the slightly taller 6’6” Joshua to have the same kinds of problems as the other guys have had in the past.

Joshua, 26, says he plans on putting the heat on Martin to make it an unpredictable fight. In other words, Joshua plans on bum rushing Martin to try and bang up out in the first couple of rounds like he’s done with all the poor opponents that his promoter Eddie Hearn has found for him to blow through.

Charles Martin: Anthony Joshua’s muscles will make him tired

Image: Charles Martin: Anthony Joshua's muscles will make him tiredBy Scott Gilfoid: IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin (23-0-1, 21 KOs) thinks the heavily muscled challenger Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs) had better be using this training camp to whittle down his bulky muscles on his frame, because he’s going to wear down with them when he faces Martin on April 9 at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Martin says Joshua is top heavy with skinny legs. Those muscles are going to cause Joshua to wear down in the second half of the fight right when Martin is going up.

Groves vs. Brophy added to Martin-Joshua card

groves634By Scott Gilfoid: #2 WBC George Groves (22-3, 17 KOs) will be taking a non-risky 12-round fight at super middleweight against light hitting domestic level fighter David Brophy (16-0-1, 1 KO) on the undercard of the Anthony Joshua vs. Charles Martin fight card next month on April 9 on Sky Box Office from the O2 Arena in London, UK.

There had been talk of the 27-year-old Groves fighting former four-time world title challenger loser Martin Murray, but that fight isn’t happening next for Groves. It looks like he needs another confidence booster type of fight, and the 25-year-old light hitting Brophy is the perfect opponent for Groves to boost his confidence.

This is arguably a step down from Groves’ last opponent Andrea Di Luisa, who he stopped in the 5th round last January at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK.

Anthony Joshua vs. Charles Martin analysis and prediction

joshua455By Scott Gilfoid: In 24 days from now, unbeaten Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs) will be fighting for a world title against the talented and hard hitting IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin (23-0-1, 21 KOs) on April 9 on Sky Box Office at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Joshua, 26, has been training hard to develop his muscles with the belief that they will help him win the fight against the 6’5” Martin. That’s mistake number. You don’t train muscles when you’re are trying to beat a highly skilled southpaw like Martin. On the contrary, you need to strip off muscles and try and become as fast as humanely possible, especially if your name is Joshua. He’s already incredibly slow with his punching style, and he doesn’t have a finesse approach to fighting.

In other words, Joshua just goes straight at his opponents hoping that he can overpower them. In the Olympics, this approach failed for Joshua because three of his four opponents got the better of him when he was fighting that way, even though he was given controversial wins in all three of those fights.

Shannon Briggs in London looking for Haye, Joshua and Fury

YouTube video

By Scott Gilfoid: Shannon Briggs (59-6-1, 52 KOs) was telling the truth when he said he was coming over to London, England this week to hunt for David Haye. Briggs arrived in London on Tuesday, and immediately let the media know that he’s hunting for Haye, Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua while he’s over there.

The 44-year-old Briggs wants to line up a big money fight against one of those fighters. You can’t say that Briggs isn’t ranked high enough to fight them, as the WBA has him ranked at #4 right now, and he’s a stone throw away from getting a #1 spot.

Fury wants Wladimir, Joshua-Martin winner, & Deontay

fury1000By Scott Gilfoid: Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) wants to fight the winner of next month’s April 9 bout between IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin and Anthony Joshua. But more specifically, Fury BADLY wants to fight Joshua in what he considers as a “super fight.”

Fury doesn’t seem to realize that there the odds of him fighting Joshua are pretty slim right now. Fury would need to defeat Wladimir Klitschko (64-4, 53 KOs) in their rematch on June 4 in Austria, and Joshua would need to defeat Martin. For Fury to get his way to fight Joshua, it’ll need to be the perfect storm for that to happen, and I don’t see it happening.

Charles Martin: I will KO Anthony Joshua

Image: Charles Martin: I will KO Anthony JoshuaBy Scott Gilfoid: IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin (23-0-1, 21 KOs) has no doubts in his mind that he’s going to be knocking out British challenger Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs) in less than a month from now on April 9.

Martin feels that he’s got the punching power, talent and the experience to blast the 26-year-old Joshua out in front of the sold out crowd at the O2 Arena in London, England. The Joshua vs. Martin fight will be televised on Sky Box Office pay-per-view, which means the huge 6’5” Martin will be getting a nice little payday in this fight.

Super Heavyweight Super 6

1-DEONTAY WILDER-WEIGH IN-01152015-9717By Bob Smith: Late last year, following the surprise defeat of Wladimir Klitschko at the hands of Tyson Fury, noted author Bob Smith wrote a prescient article on the importance of size to the outcome of a fight in the heavyweight division. It is worth a read if you have not looked at it before:

http://www.boxingnews24.com/2015/11/we-need-a-super-heavyweight-division/

I bring this up in particular because the author brought up a key point about the evolution of the heavyweight division. In references to the four fighters Klitschko, Fury, Deontay Wilder, and Anthony Joshua, he wrote:

The heavyweight division has everything right now

1-deontay-wilder (6)By Gav Duthie: Its arguably taken 20 years but the heavyweight division, the fulcrum of boxing, is something to get excited about again. It has been two decades since the all American showdown between Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson (Nov 1996) which put Evander at the sports summit.

Heavyweights have always been the torch bearers of boxing and with todays popularity of UFC the resurgence of heavyweights can help boxing immensely. Since the Tyson era the division has been dominated by three people, Lennox Lewis and the Klitschko brothers, Vitaly and Wladimir which has lead to disenchantment with the heavy hitters.

Unlike many I’m a fan of all 3 but in any sport if one person/team dominates for too long it becomes stale. Fans need the unexpected, 50/50 fights, knockout artists, slugfests and rivalries and I think we are at the start of something great. The talent may not be the same as the 90s but the similarities are there.
