Can Mbilli Shock the World Against Morrell? Experts Debate Next Move for Undefeated Contender

Entertaining undefeated contender Christian Mbilli (26-0, 22 KOs) has boxing experts thinking about the possibility of him challenging for a world title next against WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight champion David Morrell Jr. following his performance last weekend in Quebec City, Canada.

Mbilli destroyed Rohan Murdock in six rounds on the Artur Beterbiev vs. Callum Smith undercard and opened the eyes of many fans who had never seen or heard of him before this performance.

Mbilli: Fun, Dangerous, and Ranked #1

Boxing experts Chris Algieri and Dan Cannobio believe that the 28-year-old Mbilli, rankedĀ #1 WBA, #1 WBC, #3 IBF, and #5 WBO, is deserving of a world title shot at 168, be it against undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez or WBA ‘regular’ champ Morrell (10-0, 9 KOs).

“I want to see this guy against some of the upper guys at 168 because he’s fun, and he’s a new name, and he’s probably going to get knocked out, but he’s going to try and take you out beforehand,” said Dan Cannobio to Inside Boxing Live, talking about unbeaten, highly rated super middleweight contender Christian Mbilli.

Morrell: The Heavy Favorite

“This guy is ranked #1 in the WBA. David Morrell, who is the [regular] world champion with the WBA at 168. Canelo is the super champion. To be ranked #1 in two sanctioning bodies that’s really hard to do. Canelo, I don’t think that’s likely. Christian Mbilli vs. David Morrell, two guys on top of the WBA’s rankings. Obviously, Morrell would be a heavy favorite, but it would be a fun fight.”

The experts obviously feel that the talented Cuban Morrell, would be a “heavy favorite,” but it’s a fight that they still would like to see because it would be entertaining for as long as it lasts. Mbilli would bring the fight to Morrell, who enjoys facing aggressive fighters who look to punch with him.

“He’s going to get the shot. That O that he has is really important. Is it going to be David Morrell on Amazon Prime? I think they’re angling him to be one of the stars for that platform for PBC. That would be a nice sterling record to have and a good main event,” said Chris Algieri about Mbilli.
